The room cost $25. The bellhop had $5. When he gave the $3 back to the men, that adds up to $25 + $3 = $28. So there is no missing money. Or the room cost $30. Subtract $3 that the men got back and you have $27. Subtract $2 that the bellhop kept and you have $25. You cannot account for the money the way the problem is worded. That's why it is so interesting.  |
