Are LadyBugs Good Luck?

Since it was so beautiful outside today, I took my 18 month old son out on the balcony to get some fresh air. On our guard rail, I saw a tiny orange looking lady bug. I pointed it out to my son and he was so happy to see this little creature crawling. He tried to poke it but I wouldn't let him, but you know how fast kids are, next thing I knew, he had poked the bug off the balcony. I think it flew away to safety from my toddler. My son was so glad to see the little bug that he didn't want to come back in the house. Well later on tonight, I saw one on the celing that was a lot redder with more spots on its back. My husband saw it and asked me if he should kill it, I told him no, and told him to take it outside in some paper and that I was scared of bad karma or something..(dont get me wrong now, I will kill a spider a fly or a roach if it crawled my way) On the way out, he saw a third one on the outside of our balcony door. It was just that I thought that I heard somewhere that these Asian beatles bring good fortune or luck, and that if you kill them you get bad luck. Is this true, or am I just getting a bug infestation and need to call the extermanator? I'm not usually superstitious. Does anyone know for sure?

How it changed my life:

I'm holding out on bug spray for a while..........

Date: 10/23/2003 6:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 58416    I'm not sure about the good luck thing. I've always been told that but one year I got a real bad infestation of them in my basement and they were everywhere. I couldnt even take food down there with me cause they would eat on it. I later heard that they were meat eaters? But I couldnt kill them because they are so darn cute so i just let em die off when it got cold lol.
Date: 10/23/2003 6:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 28890    BEWARE OF THOSE BITING BEETLES! My house gets infested every year from those things! This is in Wisconsin too! You better watch out! Keep that bug spray and get out bay leaves. goodluck
Date: 10/23/2003 7:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    I always thought LadyBugs resembled goodluck, I can remember family members telling me, be gentle... the LadyBug brings good luck, and also count the spots, the more spots, the more wiser the LadyBug, the more luck... lol, it's a cute tradition, but to be 100% honest I'm not sure :0)
Date: 10/23/2003 9:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 32193    dunno.. i never kill them tho, but if i see one on someone, ill flick it off, if it lives, good for it, if not oh well haha iv never gotten bad luck from them tho or good.. i think they're just another bug lol but w/e
Date: 10/23/2003 10:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62376    All I know is that I could use some good luck. lol We saw three of them and they say third times a charm. If I see more than seven (thats the highest I'm going) I breaking out the raid!
Date: 10/24/2003 5:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 43556    I always heard that "true" lady bugs were lucky. However, the little critters that I have been seeing lately are not what we consider ladybugs. They are close relatives. They were imported to eat aphids and have gotten out of control. They are everywhere. And they do bite!! The cold weather will get rid of them.
Date: 10/24/2003 10:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    I used to live in a house that had a nest of them. We'd come home and they would be everywhere. Some of them bite. I've seen a few here in Indiana. One day, we were "golfing" and my hubby got bit by one. I wouldn't put the bug spray away if I were you. BTW, when they bite it feels like a sting. It isn't pleasant.
Date: 10/24/2003 3:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    I was always told ladybugs brought good luck. I love the little critters, they are soo cute. If bugs get in the house, I try to catch them and toss them out, otherwise the cats make a meal of them. Oh well...
Date: 10/30/2003 10:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 28989    Ladybugs are probably good luck, because they eat aphids and other pests that can destroy crops. But they do bite. One day I was admiring one on my arm, when it chomped on me. Ow! It does feel like a sting. They're beautiful, though.
Date: 11/17/2003 12:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62376    Well, I still am not sure if they are good or not, I still havent killed any, but I havent seen any since I wrote the last post either. As far as the luck goes, nothing lucky has happend since the LB sightings so I guess I answered my own questions. lol
Date: 3/6/2005 9:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    I have no idea but anymore when I see a ladybug, I think of the movie/cartoon "It's A Bug's Life" and the ladybug that wasn't a lady. But the spots on them are different and so it the color.
