Actually at the school my children go to they teach sign language as a mini course. We have a couple kids that are deaf, so it is taught if the kids want it..It isnt mandatory though..My Daughter has learned it. |

I don't think it's a bad idea myself. I think all schools should ofter it to their students. |

i go to a school in australia...although out school doesnt teach brail, there are a few kids there who actually learn with sign language due to there hearing difficulties....this year a auslan class was created for any students who wanted to learn signing.....a lot of kids actually opted to study that....i studied auslan from year 8 for a year or 2, and really enjoyed it...even though i forget most of it i think that lanuage of any type of communication is really important in society! Very good post *hugz* :) |

i think that is a great idea!! it would make 'special needs' students and people throughtout the whole community people of 'everyday needs' and so those who have sight or hearing problems wouldnt feel so distant from the community. :) |

Sign language is easy enough to teach yourself, I learned a lot of it when I was 10 years old just by reading a sign language book. I might as well learn braille too, I've got terrible vision for my age. My vision is worse then my parents vision, and even my grandpa. |

Sign would be a very good idea. I've been suggesting this to the school board for years now... |

I don't think that I've ever been in a situation where I could have used sign language. So, even if I had learned it in grammer school, I would most likely have forgotten most of it by now. It there was someone who I needed to communicate with through sign language then I would learn it. Otherwise to me, it is in the same catagory as learning a foreign language. |

I think that sign language would be an interesting elective. |

Actually, both of my kids have deaf children in their classrooms, so they are learning sign. I think it is wonderful, and something they might need in the future. |

I do think it would be good for schools to offer it. I am learning sign language now. I think it is good for students to learn different things like braille or sign. |

I deliberately held off replying to this because there's something knocking at the back of my mind, not to fully oppose the question, but to highlight a problem with it. I can't remember what it is though until I check my notes from my training as an Adult Learner Supporter. |
