Ghostly Goodbye
The old man walked slowly into the graveyard. He walked with a pronounced limp and slowly made his way to the grave of his oldest enemy. Since grammar school William had plagued Bob. Not only was William a bully but also he was better at everything then Bob. Athletics; William was the star, but Bob went largely unnoticed. Academics; Bob was a good student, but William was a National Merit Scholar. Love; Bob’s heart was broken when William impregnated the girl Bob loved.
That had been the story of his life. No matter what Bob achieved, William achieved more and would rub that in Bob’s face. If Bob managed to do something great, William would find a way to spoil it.
Bob walked up to the grave and put some flowers on it. “Rest in peace,” he said as he stood there and looked at the gravestone. “In the end, this is the only thing that I’ve managed to do better than you. I manage to live longer than you and recognize the need to forgive you so that both of us may truly have peace at last”
It was getting dark so he though he should be leaving, but he enjoyed seeing the grave of his nemesis. He was still lost in his memories of all the awful things that William had done to him when a boney hand quietly broke through the top of the grave.
Bob was shocked when he saw the hand coming up out of the earth. It latched onto his ankle with a vice like grip. Bob struggled but the hand held and then the rest of the ghost of William slowly rose from the grave. The ghostly skeleton brushed dirt off itself as it stood up by Bob. It still looked just like William.
Bob clutched his chest as he felt the first massive pain of a heart attack. The last words he heard were coming from the skeletons foul mouth. “Tag, you it,” said the skeleton, “ and you’ll be it for all eternity.”
