The People Next Door!!!!!!.............Zema

I found this article I was reading to be so true and thought I would share it with you and see what you think of it also...its written by a Psychologist who has had over 20yrs experience....and I read a lot of her writings..

Go next door and borrow two eggs', my mother would frequently ask me when I was a child if she suddenly realized she'd run out while making a cake.

Just as frequently, the little boy next door would turn up with an empty cup and request flour. Neighbours would save you a trip to the supermarket, assist with medicines for a sick child and help out when things broke down. It was common for neighbours to get together for drinks and dinner parties and for the kids to happily run from one house to another.

Today, our lives are so much busier. Many people don't even know their neighbours' names, the only contact being a quick hello at the letterbox. Older people and stay-at-home mums may have closer relationships with their neighbours, but generally there's less time and less desire to strike up a relationship with neighbours.

The downside to having very little neighbourly contact goes beyond trips out to the shops on a rainy night. It can increase your security risk. The neighbour who has no contact with you is less likely to notice if a thief is on your premises, wouldn't know how to contact you if they were suspicious, and is not going to offer to clear your mail when you're on holidays.

People who live on their own could literally drop dead without neighbours noticing.

These downsides assume that your neighbours aren't a security risk themselves. Some people are terrified of their neighbours and for them, no relationship is safer than any relationship. Others feel overwhelmed by nosey neighbours, neighbours that drop in uninvited or ones who offer opinions that vary from which plants to grow in your garden to how to parent your kids.

What type of relationship you have with your neighbours will depend on your lifestyle and the judgements you make about your neighbours. For most people, there's an optimal level of interaction halfway between having no relationship and sharing a friendship. This level of "polite acquaintanceship" will help if there's an issue that needs to be sorted out, such as a light or noise that's bothering you at night.

For most people, the best of both worlds involves a level of neighbourly contact that's friendly enough to allow for relaxed conversation and keeping an eye out for each other, but not so close that you feel like you're living in each other's pockets.

FOOTNOTE:

I think this is a good article, I wave and have a quick hello to my neighbours, and there is only one young couple who live next door to me that we are more friendlier with, but, we may not see one another for a week at a time and we know that if either of us need any sort of help we are there for one another. I know of other people who live in one anothers homes practically and before long they argue and fall out with one another...that's not for me and besides, I'm far too busy with my life for this...

Luv and Peace....Zema

Date: 10/24/2003 7:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 60052    It's very true for me. I don't know any of my neighbor's names and I live in an apartment. I have seen them a few times in passing, but it's always just a quick hello. I feel badly about it sometimes, but what are you going to do? I mean, we all have our own lives and stuff we have to get done. I don't even have many friends, cause I'm too busy to keep them most of the time, and I don't want them to be upset with me because I don't have time to spend with them.
Date: 10/24/2003 7:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 47930    Great Post Aunty, it is so true. We talk with all of our neighbors daily. Welike where we live now. I feel very safe here, for that very reason. Thank you and big hugs to you..:)
Date: 10/24/2003 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    we moved into our house in July and still only know ONE neighbor..none of the others have bothered to stop by and introduce themselves...yet they'll send their kids over to borrow stuff..maybe it's rude of me but i'm not lending stuff to people who haven't even come by to say hello in three months.....sorry..wee bit of a rant there
Date: 10/24/2003 7:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    yeah, I have one couple who are drug addicts, and I was always scared of them, especially if I was out the front yard when they were coming back from getting their methadone, I used to go back inside....and I dont know how many times they came in looking for us to give them ciggies and we dont smoke...and if they wanted to use the phone, I would ring the number for them only if it was an urgent call and I also kept the screen door locked....I do acknowledge the other neighbours even if its just a wave...thanks for your comments here ...hugs to you all
Date: 10/24/2003 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    I have strange neighbors. I rarely see any of them. I miss living on an Army post where I knew I could borrow a cup of flour or sugar whenever I needed it.
Date: 10/24/2003 8:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    thanks Kelly for your comment hun....I feel sad though when I read in the newspapers of some person being found dead in their homes and have been that way for quite some time and to think that nobody noticed them not being around....so sad....
Date: 10/24/2003 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    I know most of my neighbors. We all look out for each other! Hi Grammy! Huggs!
Date: 10/24/2003 8:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    hi Moonie!!!! thanks for your comment hun, yeah I know my neighbours, but I'm not closely involved with them....hugs Grammy
Date: 10/25/2003 2:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Good post Sis. I had good neighbors before and have missed them. It was safe to know that people were looking after your home when you weren't home. Here, I "know" people but we all keep to ourselves and that's why that guy that died wasn't found for a few weeks untill the smell got so bad that the manager checked it out.
Date: 10/25/2003 5:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    yes Penny, I remember you posting about that poor man...so sad....thanks hun for your comment....hugs
Date: 10/25/2003 6:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    I used to know my neighbors on one side of me. We had a great relationship and they looked after me. They were very concerned about my safety. They moved this summer. Now, I not only don't know my neighbors, but we don't even speak the same language. They speak very limited English and my Spanish is even more limited.
Date: 10/25/2003 6:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    thanks Peridotcat for your comment hun...and maybe you could introduce yourself to them, they might feel a little shy ....I think everyone needs someone to look out for them....hugs
