People begging for money *PunkStarChik*

Hey everyone!

I'm wondering if you see this happening around the place where you live. Every highway exit I get off at and go onto, I see a person begging for money. Every Exit!! Each begger holds a sign saying stuff like "Homeless, need money", "Need job", "No home, living in tent, 4 children" and so forth.

I'm used to see these "beggers" downtown but not in the city where I live in. It seems like people are just doing this to get free money. I swear, almost every exit, there's a person there begging for money. Makes me wonder if anyone has ever had to fight for an exit to stand at? LOL!

There are just some people that I don't trust on giving money to. One time, I was leaving for college and a man in dirty clothes came up to my car window. He acutally startled me and he was begging for money saying that his car ran out of gas and he needed money for gas. I really didn't want to give him money right there, so I told him that I would drive him to the gas station to give him gas or whatever. But he kept making excuses and I didn't like his presense there much longer.

So I ended up giving him a couple bucks. He wouldn't leave and he kept talking. So I ended up giving him more money! I felt so stupid for giving him 7 dollars!! I just wanted him to go away because he was making me really uncomfortable.

After that happening, I don't give out money anymore. Even if it's bums on the streets down town, I won't give them any money. It makes me kinda mad seeing some of these people standing out near the highway exits begging for money because some of the people that I've seen have really nice clothes on and them munching on food that they probably bought from the store.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's stupid of them to go out there begging for extra money like that. There isn't one exit around my town that doesn't have a begger begging for money. It's just insane.

Do you have this happening where you're at? What do you think about this?

Unless you want to count the Underage students who are begging for money to buy cigarettes or nagging you to buy them for them. LOL! But I have been to cities where this does happen and I just walk away. It's sad to know that there are people out there who pretend to be homeless just to get money. .
Date: 10/24/2003 8:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Social Slacker...It is sad to know that they pretend. Maybe some of them aren't pretending but you just don't know sometimes, you know? I was walking downtown one time and some teenager asked if I had any spare change and I said "no". Which I didn't at the time, even if I did, I still wouldn't of gave him any change. Then he got mad at me and yells "Why the *bleep* not?!* I just walked away.
Date: 10/24/2003 8:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 50364    It happens here in Cleveland all the time, My husband and I were just talking about that tonight. He said most of those people are probly rich and the sad part is there are needy people out there but you can't trust anyone.. Chelelea
Date: 10/24/2003 8:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Chelelea....One time, my family and I were driving to Disneyland and we were going through California. I saw a man standing on a corner with 2 children! I don't remember what the sign said but having those 2 children, probably under the ages of 6 at least, standing out there with him! That's dangerous.
Date: 10/24/2003 8:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 50364    That is so sad that he had to endanger them like that. This world is becoming a sad sad place to be in especially for our children..Chelelea
Date: 10/24/2003 8:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    there is a bit of that around here(it's in every town) there is two different types of beggers.. there is the old man... and the older teen young adult(this one usually has a pet).... the younger teen/adult usually has peircings messed hair females wear make up(like insanly heavy eye shadow)... i'm the type who will give a buck or two the olderly guys way(or even food) he usually pushes a cart around and is never actually sitting asking people fo rmoney with a sign... but the young.. they have sign(some have brand name clothing)... this also sorta leads into the welfare recipiants who drive around in luxary cars with brand names and can afford to go parting....
Date: 10/24/2003 8:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Chelelea....I agree
Date: 10/24/2003 8:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Midnightly....I've seen a couple people with pets out there also. I've acutally seen one of the beggers get into a car one time. I guess one of his friends went to pick him up after working for free money.
Date: 10/24/2003 9:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    Yes! I do! I carry blankets & food in my car for them & always try to give them at least $1.00. First off these are moslty people who have given up on the system! Have no education & maybe a mental problem from birth, drugs or alachol! I work with some of these people in the human services dept. Some could not hold a job even if they tried their hardest! Never judge a person by the way they live. They are human & deserve love. Yes some are scammers! There's always that. Most are what you see. Hungry, dirty & cold! That's why I carry blankets. I give them one! Canned food to. We are all God's children no matter where we are in life. One of the people in my life that I love dearly, is one of those people. He has yet to find a way out. I pray to God someday he does. Until then, I can only love him & help where I can!
Date: 10/24/2003 9:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 17014    Next time toss them a can of Aldi's veggies or something...lol. I used to see this in Madison when i lived there last year, I don't feel sorry for them, there's plenty of temp agencies and jobs out there they can go to if they really want to help themselves...
Date: 10/24/2003 9:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Moon Girl...That's really sweet of you. :) For some reason, I just don't trust some of the people around where I live. Today, I was acutally debating whether or not to give some change to the people begging at the highway exits. I know that there are people out there that can't hold a job or any other honest reasons why they're begging. Most of the time I don't carry extra change with me. Whenever I go walking around downtown, I see people in wheel chairs, crutches, or in any poor conditions, I would feel sorry for them and again I would debate whether or not to give them money. I don't think that it's stupid that some people are begging for money, as long as their not scammers. I hate scammers. But I guess you can never really tell who's a scammer or not sometimes.
Date: 10/24/2003 9:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Kelsey...Sometimes I do feel sorry for some of the people out there. I just wish that there weren't any scammers out there. One time, I was walking downtown and a man was begging for some change to some woman. The woman told the man that she didn't have any money to give out, but she was willing to take him out to get something to eat. She was offering him some food with the kindness of her heart. But the man refused and said he was just looking for money to buy alcohol and smokes. This man was probably around his late 40's and he was dressed in old dirty clothing. That was really sweet of her to offer that though.
Date: 10/25/2003 7:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 44321    There is a homeless man here that sits out in front of dunkin donuts with a big 40 of beer asking for money..once I was walking and this man got right up in my face wanting quarters.I give what I can sometimes..here is something that happened to me once when I was pregnant on my way to my ob/gyn appointment..a man was sitting outside Burger King shaking his cup asking for money ,I was about to drop a few quarters in for him and he said NO,mom you have the baby to provide for I will be fine :)he would not let me put the money in so I smiled at him and kept walking.
Date: 10/25/2003 8:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 44321    Once while we were at the city bus stop,a woman came up to a guy asking him for money for food,he said here I have a nice sandwich she said NO,he said well your not really looking for food then are you ? I have given food at the bus stop if I have any on me.
Date: 10/25/2003 11:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 19625    Yeah, I hate it when they have Sarcastic signs too, that just makes me mad. One time there was a Black Man standing on the Median in the middle of the road near the mall, and he was holding a sign that said "If you don't contribute money to me, you must be raceist" lol, I notcied NO one was giving him money. Erin-
Date: 10/25/2003 12:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Medusa....Wow, he didn't want u to give him money cause you were having a baby. That's sweet of what he said! :) I wouldn't of expected that from someone, or anyone at all.
Date: 10/25/2003 12:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Emmielou...LMAO! Are you serious?? I remember when I was younger, I saw a teenager boy holding up a sign that said "Need money for concert!!* LOL!
Date: 10/25/2003 2:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    punky look at them in a case by case... if they are a teenager or young adult... they are probally there because they want to be.. if they have peircings or wearing make up.. they probally have a home to go tomostly eyeliner andeye shadow around here, but if they look like they have a mental disorder(yes there are alot of those people on the street unfortunately) and clean shaven is also a key if they are homeless and helpless like they say they are... and the older they are.... it's very unfortunate that our seniors who have maybe made a bad decission in thier life is now spending thier golden years on the street
Date: 10/25/2003 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    I live in the Washington DC area where seeing beggars is a common sight. Some were genuine. Others appeared carrying the same sign at the same site everyday year after year. For security reasons, I never gave to any individual. I give to charities to help these people.
Date: 10/25/2003 7:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    My hubby and I had a guy come up to our window of our car and stick his head right in. He scared me to death, I didn't know if he was going to harm us or what. He then said he needed money for alcohol, not food. It was obvious he wasn't lying but it may have actually been for drugs. I did laugh, I'll admit because at least he didn't lie to us saying he was starving. I gave him the $1.50 I had, basically because I wanted him to leave not because I wanted to aid his addiction or distructive behavior. Yep, this is a very scary epidemic now-a-days and their tenacity in getting money makes me uneasy.
Date: 10/27/2003 11:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Midnightly...Yeah I usually look at them to see what they look like and stuff.
Date: 10/27/2003 11:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    62367....I like to give stuff to charity also.
Date: 10/27/2003 11:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    You Choose...Yea at least he was honest. LOL! It's hard to tell if some people are being honest or not though sometimes.
Date: 11/4/2003 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 13283    Giving them money only encourages begging . In the city of Dallas they have made it illegal to beg for money at street corners . Some beggars were getting agressive and forcing people to give them money . There are shelters and church groups that will provide them with a meal if they need one . I think alot of them beg for money to buy drugs . Do not support their habit ! Razzy aka
Date: 11/5/2003 3:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    Razzy...Some people you just don't know what they're really begging for. But most of them are usually wanting money for drugs, alcohol, smokes and other useless things. They do have shelter and church's that they can go to.
