There isn't much this little town offers at midnight, I can't even get a meal at the drive through because I am on foot. And the traffic flow is slow, at best. Two days ago it was a drag queen stopping; in a lived in camper van, and with a falsetto voice that eventually drove me back to the road ten blocks short of my home. Tonight I am surprised and delighted. A nice young lady stops to offer a stranger a lift. Knowing that no busses run this time of night, she goes out of her way for me. In a twenty minute drive the conversation runs a gamut; From the person that picked me up the other night, to the work market, and her studying to be a teacher. We spoke of art, and ways to use the government. We spoke of street kids, and ways of helping out with them. We touched on poetry, and the basic needs of creativity, and we shared with each other a little of our joys. With a ride that ended at my front door And a conversation that lasted for a few more minutes, I crouched on my curb with her door open as we talked about continuing education. As I thank her for the ride and conversation I stand to realize It is nights like this that are the reason I still stick out my thumb.
