Who Told You, You Were Wrong?......

Think hard about the religious discussions and debates that you have taken part in regardless of your belief, faith etc. How many times have you actually been told that your belief is wrong and that you are not entitled to believe the way you do?

I have seen statements made regarding beliefs, that lead one to believe that they have been or are being told that their beliefs are wrong and they aren't entitled to them, from various "religions".

With all of the debates and discussions that I have taken part in I know that I have never made those statements, and I don't believe that I have implied them either.

I have been told outright that I am not entitled to have mine on the other end.

What has been your experience? When you debate and discuss your religious beliefs have you been told outright that your beliefs are wrong, or have you picked up that impression through other words?

Date: 10/26/2003 9:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 56293    I don't take part in the religious debates here at USM because it seems they always get to ugly. . But, in real life I have been told that what I think or believe is wrong. .But I don't let it get to me.
Date: 10/26/2003 10:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 1799    i don't debate much on usm because as Social Slacker said.. its gets really ugly.. but i hate how people always dismiss things i say just because my beliefs are different.. i've had people tell me that god's going to send down burning balls of fire to kill me because I'm a wiccan.. and now i can laugh at it.. but it still hurts because i'm still a person... i believe all religious views are correct.. they are correct for who you are..wicca suits me while being a Mormon suits my grandma and cousins and such..but, this is how i see it.. if they want to say that, then they are pretty ignorant and rude.
Date: 10/26/2003 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 62240    Well im sure i been told that one time or another, must not have affected me too much though or i would remember. Really i think religious debates are pointless in terms of that its quite impossible to prove anything to those may or may not disagree with you. but everyone should be able to walk away from any such debate feeling that they themselves and everyone has the right and is entitled to their own beliefs.
Date: 10/26/2003 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 61811    Well, I have been through this, but i wouldn't actually conciter it a debate. I dont remember exactly how this started but they were like, "Don't you beleve In god?" "No, I find that really hard to believe in something that is really impossible to do dealing with making an earth in 7 days." I said this in a nice way, they weren't. "Oh...my gosh! How dare you! You are so stupid! You are gonna burn in hell for this!" "Well I don't believe in hell, so sod off!" lol I am bad at comebacks. I don't get it though..I don't go to people and go, "Oh my gosh! You believe in god? you are sooo totally wrong!" Because I don't think that way. I think that if they want to believe something, then go ahead and let them belive that. I don't know if im right or if they are right, but no matter what, i think you have the right to believe what you want. love,
Date: 10/26/2003 1:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I've been told my view was wrong a few times and it's been implied many times.
Date: 10/26/2003 1:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think that whole "you are wrong" against a belief is wrong... no one can tell you that you are wrong to believe in god, a princess, budda, vishnew<sorry sp prob wrong) or the big pink bunny in the mountian in the sky....it's respect... and unless you have PROOF don't tell someone they are wrong
Date: 10/26/2003 1:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    and just because you see the leaves on hte tree as green.. doens't mean someone else does... in there mind that might be yellow or red.... who are you to argue with them
Date: 10/26/2003 1:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    You Choose, someone may have very well stated that your viewpoint was wrong. That's a whole seperate issue. I think we have all been told at one point or another that our view on something is wrong....lol
Date: 10/26/2003 2:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I was just answering your question directly, given in your last paragraph of the post. Yes, most people probably have had this happen to them especially if they enter into debates or discussion that tend to get heated or are very controversial.
Date: 10/26/2003 2:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    As for my experience though speaking solely of religious discussions...I've been told I'm wrong for having my views but it's more often implied that I shouldn't believe as I do.
Date: 10/26/2003 2:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Hope that clears up what I originally meant... :o)
Date: 10/26/2003 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 62357    Anyone who really believes in what they believe in is naturally NOT going to believe in another religion. No one will ever convince a christian that there is no God, or a Pagan that there is a God, so it all boils down to what You choose to believe, right? And, as long as there are people on the face of this earth, this will no doubt continue.....Darlene
Date: 10/26/2003 6:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    I have been told that my belief is wrong, but never that I am not entitled to it. Do I believe that some others beliefs are wrong..Yes..Are they entitled to their beliefs..Yes..I think that most people believe strongly in something or someone. I think this is normal and can be expected. But I cannot understand someone having the gall to tell someone that they are not entitled to their belief.
Date: 11/16/2003 10:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    *Whew* I have had that happen. I have been told my religion was created by Gerald Gardner in the early 1900's. (Wrong-I am not a member of the Gardianian Traditions, and in any event, Gerald Gardner was initiated by some families with very old roots in England. These same people have magical backgrounds. I have been told that my religion is not a "real" religion, and that "there is no such religion as Wicca". I still hear the whole Wicca & Witchcraft are "Satanic" religions. *sigh* People hear what they want. And, some are arrogant enough to believe they can dictate to others, good post!
