Religous Topics & How They Could Be Handled Well In Public School

I went to school in a very nice suburb of Chicago. I was still in Cook County, and subject to the laws & school system that covered Chicago. Now, I am 42 years old. For you kids, that means I graduated H.S. in 1979 (Just like the Smashing Pumpkins song).

My elementary school was composed of primarily Jewish students & teachers. Our pledge included the words "Under God". In second grade, we learned about Passover & made draydles. I still know the "Draydle song". Now, I was a Gentile, so when I went home, my folks were like "that's nice, you should know about other people, but we are not Jewish". No problem, no argument. No hassle.

If I asked my Teacher about a "Star of David", in class, she told all the kids what it meant & asked me if I could share a story about a giant star. (The one from the Biblical tale of Jesus's Birth). NO problem.

In 5th grade, 5th grade! My school took us on field trips for ONE solid week. We were being taught the history of religion. We visited a Jewish Temple & listened to a Cantor sing (to this day hearing a Cantor sing raises chills to me, even though I do NOT speak a word of Herbrew).

Then we visited a Buddist Shrine. A robed monk explained about reincarnation ("Many Births") to be like God.We were impressed.

We visited Indian Shrine, and I think the Goddess was Kali, I know it was not Ganish, because Ganish has an elephant head & this was a six-armed Goddess.

We visited a Catholic Church, the Bishop showed us what a confessional looked like, explained the Mary & Joseph statues & what Holy Water was for.

Our final visit was to my own Lutheran Church, and the classmates, who were Jewish were surprised if you were a guy, you could NOT wear a hat inside the sanctuary.:)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6th grade-along comes Evolution. My teacher Mr. Hanson, who was a JW, said that some believed in creation, some in evolution. We could divide ourselves up & the creationists could go to the library & the evolutionists had to stay in class. I had NO clue what my position was (I loved dinosaurs), but heck, no school work & hanging out in the library? What would you have done.

NOTE: In my homeroom, this kid told the teacher he didn't want to say the pledge anymore because of the "Under God" statement. So, Mr. Kesslersays, "You believe in America, right?". The kid says yeah, so Mr. Kessler says "well then think of America when we say the pledge & just don't say the words "Under God".

*BTW this was during the Nixon '70's and my teacher was a RABID democrat. He also taught us Communism in Social Studies, and had us read from Mao's Little Red Book.* Mr. Kessler always joined us when we said the pledge.

My English class had The Hobbit, Beowolf, Black Boy, and Paradise Lost. We also had CS Lewis's Mere Christianity. Looking back, what a balanced study.

In gym class, I took three years of yoga. 6-8th grade, Part of yoga is learning about the Vedas & Chakras. Indian Mystism. My parents didn't mind. Frankly it helped tone me for horseback riding.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe saying the pledge, being taught with love, respect, and example about the religions around me. Seeing a self-professed Communist say the pledge to the flag, and not giving a freebie" to a 10-year old athiest by having him show respect to COUNTRY, not a God, was a good example to me.

ALL OF THIS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE I WAS 14 YEARS OLD. What did I learn? People are different. There are different Gods. Nobodies God could beat up anyone elses God. IT WASN'T AN ISSUE. Hey, we debated the Palastinian/Israeli war over the holy land. We debated it in social studies. No one got in trouble if they favored the Arabs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

My point is this, maybe people, teachers, students, should be EDUCATED about the way OTHERS think and feel.Maybe they should be taught EVERYONE has a valid point of view.

Maybe Adults should live, learn, and leave people to live in peace. You don't believe in abortion? Don't have one! You don't want to say a silent prayer? Mentally plan you next trip to Saks. If a homosexual is teaching in your childs school...........that is his buisness. Maybe you should ask yourself why you are so homophobic.

Am I getting through here?

WHY CAN'T THIS PLAN BE IMPLIMENTED AND WORK?

Date: 10/26/2003 9:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 10030    You are very lucky to have such a history, and I applaud this post. Unfortunatly, not all of the world is as enlightened as you.
Date: 10/26/2003 9:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 56293    I say, because people are close minded. I took the class Multiculturalism my Senior Year and loved it. I myself, do not have a specific religion but I enjoyed learning about the different religions in the world, the different people and everything else there was to learn. Now, If I were being preached about the religion - I may have had a different opinion but I wasn't.
Date: 10/26/2003 9:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    Because schools differ from region to region. What works for one region doesn't necessacerily work for another! It's a nice thought though!
Date: 10/26/2003 9:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    I learned about much of the same things and I graduated in 1995. We talked about all religions, what beliefs were held by each one and from which section of the world held the majority of that belief. We discussed the religious wars. The only difference is most of the books you mentioned were banned, yet most of us still read them anyway..LOL, and we didn't take field trips to churches and temples. I don't remember many of the field trips we did take..LOL. They were usually to a farm to see how they milked cows, grew and processed food etc...LOL
Date: 10/26/2003 10:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    You make some very valid points here. Thanks for sharing this.
Date: 10/27/2003 2:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    Thankfully in the UK it is the law that children are educated about all mainstream religions.
Date: 10/27/2003 7:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    Why it can't be implemented is because people have taken the "separation of church and state" to such an extreme that any mention of anything that sounds religious is subject to a teacher being sanctioned and/or suspended so a gag order has been effectively instituted in our public schools. Of course this (your model) is a grand idea and one that doesn't advocate any one religion over another. But people have gotten to the point that, again, "separation of church and state" means PROHIBITION of mentioning of this type of subject matter vs. it being a valid subject matter for educating children on with no ESTABLISHMENT of any particular religious viewpoint. God Bless.
Date: 10/27/2003 9:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    I salute this post and presentation of ideas. There is absolutely no reason Kids can't be given an "overview" of religion in school. Kids are capable of thinking and making choices on they're own. What has occurred in this country with respect to religion and government is the result of "religiphobic" individuals. We got gays coming out of the closet, and we're trying to fill the empty space with religion...there seems to be no "two-way" streets. One groups wants something but yet they deny another group the same basic acceptance.
Date: 10/27/2003 5:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    This is a great post. You were most fortunate to attend a public school that did this. I grew up in an homogeneous neighborhood. My school did have a Christmas program that included a Hannukhah presentation. My parents took care to expose my brother and me to as many different cultures and religions as possible in Madison, Wisconsin. As an adult, I have attended a Devali festival (Hindu) and sat in a Mosque and listened to the Imam. More people should attend other faith's services; not with the intention of conversion but of learning.
Date: 10/27/2003 7:38:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    thank you all for the positive feedback! *smiles* It seems, like Az & a few others have pointed out, there WAS a time when you could be introduced to other religions & ideas without people crying "Foul"!. Maybe I do seem a bit naive here, but I believe it IS possible to share, and experience the beauty of different faiths. Now, it is almost impossible to seperate Ancient history from religion, since religion played such a HUGE part in wars & take-overs. The Political/Religious movements were in some cases, one and the same. KC, as mcuh as I love seeing your reply, I have to say, I don't think the homosexual agenda, as a whole, wants the removal of religious teachings. My friends who are involved in Gay & Lesbian rights are looking for love & tolerance from their religion(s). But, thank you for replying anyway.
Date: 10/27/2003 7:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    LSG, our public school STILL teaches everything exactly the same. We don't and didn't read their religious doctrine but we knew who what where when why and how of each religion throughout all the countries when we learned world history. We just didn't read their doctrines and books.
Date: 10/27/2003 8:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    I am glad to here that. Down here in the "Old South" the educational system is different than it is up North. I agree, you don't need to put "Holy Books" in a classroom, but how can you teach Greek History, or it's contribution to the civilized world, without dicussion the Greek Gods & Goddesses? I mean it was important to their art & music! Let alone politics.
Date: 10/27/2003 8:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    I mean "Hear" that.......
Date: 10/28/2003 1:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    That is what I mean, we did learn about Greek History, the Romans, all the Gods they worshipped etc. We just didn't learn the prayers that they said or the steps to their "rituals". Which is perfectly fine to be covered throughout and within all religions. Not to have that in the school system leaves us as being a pretty dumb society that knows nothing about the lifestyles, customs, and beliefs of the people in the rest of the world around us.
Date: 10/28/2003 1:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    Jen, I could not agree more! No one needs to know the "fine details" of a religion when learning about history, (after all, rituals would be meaningless to those who do not practice that faith anyway, I would think). But an overview is important. All I knew about Fruids, in school, was that they "practiced Human sacrific". I wish I had known, that while most of Europe was in the dark ages, the Druids had an understanding of Math, Astrology, and Medicine. That is just a small example of Historical facy that could have brought, what is usually a dry subject (History) more alive & meaningful.
