This is scary.
I tried several numbers and what Susan said is true. They popped up with name and address. My own number popped up in connection with my association with the California Association of Local Mental Health Boards and Commissions, back in 1995-96. At least my address didn't show up.
If you try your number, it seems to work better if you use this format: (area code)xxx-xxxx. If you do try it and it works for you, let me know.
As I said, this is scary. Thanks to friend, Susan, for bringing it to our attention. BFN > >Dear Friends and Family: >This is very important information and I did take the time to test it. Please see for yourself. Check it out for yourself, using your own phone number, and see if GOOGLE can find YOU!
You may want to take steps to protect yourself and your privacy.
Susan > >FYI - Google Telephone Search > > >Google has implemented a new feature wherein you type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter. You will then be given their address (if listed) and a map their house. Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing my telephone number and several of my friends' numbers.
My phone number came up with a local city listing (I don't list my address in the phone book), my phone number, my name as it is listed in the directory and map directions.
Quite frightening! Please look up your own number and test this. Think about it -- if a child, single person, ANYONE gives out their phone number, another person can now, through the miracle of the Internet FIND YOU and actually get directions to your house. And you will never know about it.
> >This is not a hoax. The safety issues are obvious and alarming; MapQuest will put a star on your house on your street and provide directions.
In order to test whether your telephone number is mapped, go to: > >www.google.com > >To SEARCH: Type in your telephone number in the search bar (i.e., 555-555-1212) dashes and spaces don't appear to be very important but try searching your number with parenthesis and without, etc., and hit enter.
This will divulge your name and address. You will see a link option to the right for MapQuest (click on it). This will use your address to provide a map to your home or place of business!
> >To BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone number. I removed my name, but I understand it takes 48-hours.
If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it's a good idea to check. Please forward to your friends and family. How it changed my life:Didn't work for me? Did it work for you Guys? Let me know......... :)
