As some of you know, Ad and I are avid fishkeepers, BUT...we are having a problem, maybe..... just maybe, one of you can help??
We have a 160 litre marine tank (48" x 18" x 18"). It's been set up for approx 8 months and all levels are stable (and tested regularly with a professional (and thorough) liquid test kit).
On the tank we have a bucket filter, a UV steriliser, a protein skimmer and 2 powerheads. We have an actinic tube and a white tube which are on for approx 10 hours per day (sometimes a little less). The tank is kept at a steady 27 degrees C (81 degrees F). The fish are fed frozen brine shrimp and we also add liquid invert food, occasionally we add a few chopped frozen cockles for the anemones and starfish. All of the tank inhabitants feed well (until they get ill).
In the tank now are a clown wrasse, a pyjama wrasse, a green chromis, an algae blenny, a black/white clownfish.
We also have 4 turbo snails, 10 assorted hermit crabs, a starfish, xenia, various button and mushroom polyps and 2 anemones, one of which is a green carpet anemone.
We have lost approx £200 worth of fish over the last 2 months, The angels and the original clownfish have fallen prey to a white spot disease that comes and goes, it looks like marine 'Ich' but in the early stages disappears during the day, the fish listed as in the tank now (except the clownfish) however have been in the tank the whole time and are healthy.
We presumed that the white ribbon eel that we had was stressing the fish by hunting at night and disturbing them, so we removed it. We also wondered if turning the skimmer off at night was causing the pH to shoot up overnight, so we left that on continuously. After a few days of an 'eel-less' tank we bought a new lamack angel to replace the one that had keeled over, within 4 days it too was dead.
Does anyone have ANY ideas as to what is stressing the fish? We buy from a reliable source and have had no problems with fish supplied by the company. There HAS to be something that is still causing a problem although no one seems to know what it might be, our fish supplier knows our set up and can see no reason why this is happening.
If ALL of the fish were affected then I could understand this.........everything else in the tank is thriving and well. HELP?
