OOh! I remember when I was like you. All stoked and such for a band. Man that really burned out when I actually got into a band. Well, I do have advice for you, seeing as you are eager to do stuff with your music... This is all from my personal experience, so I think I have a good idea as to what I am talking about. 1) Make music with people who have the same musical interests as you (enjoys same type of music, bands, and such) it makes it sooo much easier and less disagreements/arguments will arise. 2) Make music with people who are dedicated, it doesn't matter who it is because if they don't have the drive they are going to SLOW you down. 3) Make music with people who are as musically inclined as you are. Jamming with people who do not have as much experience as you do is SO irritating, seeing as you are the one left with the responsibilities for writing the whole peice. And if they are more experienced, they may not enjoy it and you will probably go really hard on yourself because you aren't at their level, you don't have much to contribute, etc. 4) If you have a problem with the band, consult everybody in it. Don't go to one person and confide in them. A band is a musical family; you are a team, you work together to achieve the same goal. 5) If someone asks to jam with you, seize the opportunity. That also goes for anybody who you know plays music, and you have ideas of jamming with them. Who cares WHO they are, the only thing that should matter to you is that they know their instrument. Don't judge the person by their nerdiness, race, or any of that stupid stuff. Music is meant to be shared, experimented with, and created. 7) This being your first session, I would leave this to be an audition. Don't go making assumptions that everyone is at the same level, or is as committed as you are. I'm sure you're all excited, but a band takes a lot of work, time and dedication. People are great for speak, but poor for action. Keep that in mind. And last but not least, MAKE MUSIC FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING MUSIC. Who cares if you ever make it big. Do it because it is so much fun and it's something that you enjoy. Don't do it for money or for popularity, because you probably won't see much of those unless you're darn good. And personally I don't respect most musicians who strive for those reasons. And if you happen to gain some attention locally, keep at it and don't let it get to your head. Oh and be sure to let me know when you guys have recorded! I would love to hear ya. Hope I helped. Adios! ![]() |
