This happened when I visited my then boyfriend in North Carolina, who was in the Marines, stationed at Camp Lejeune, for the first time.

I flew there, and rented a car, and had a map to find my way to the town where the base was located. It was a 2 hour drive. I didn't get lost the whole way to the town the base is in, but once I got in the town, I got lost.

I was trying to find the hotel I would be staying in, and meet my boyfriend there, because I wouldn't be able to enter the base without him being there with me.

The street was set up really funky, and I ended up driving straight up into the entrance to the Marine base. The guards were all standing there with their rifles, and came over to my car. I was turning bright red, and rolled down my window, and told them I was lost. I could see it in their eyes, that they wanted to laugh at me, but they didn't. I sort of nervously chuckled, and they had such stern faces without so much as a grin to make me feel better. I guess they were just doing their job, but they could have been a little friendlier.

The sight of the military men with their rifles almost made me pee myself.

Now the soldiers at the gates carry automatic weapons. This summer my family visited a base to see the museum. The gate guards wanted ID's for all the adults. I was the only one who could find my ID. My brother left his at home. My Mom (the driver) could not find her drivers license. I nearly had to be the one to drive on the base. After a thorough search of the car by the soldiers, my Mom finally found her drivers license. This all took about 15 minutes, while other vehicles drove by us slowly, occupants staring at the possible terrorists being held under gun point. I was not scared as former military it was no big deal but it was embarrassing.
