This recipe needs an intoduction. These doughnuts are the best ever. It is my favorite recipe for my favorite food. The recipe has been in the family for 3 generations dating from the 1920's and maybe before. The recipe was originally taken from a jar of Calumet Baking Powder early in this century. When I go home, this is the food I ask my Mom to make. These doughnuts are especially good with powdered sugar on them then served with apple cider or hot chocolate. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Sift flour then measure and sift 3 times with baking powder, spice, and salt. Mix sugar and butter, add well-beaten egg, then flour and milk alternately. Turn out on a well floured board and roll 1/2 in. thick. Cut doughnuts with cutter and fry in hot deep fat.
