I don' have the money to buy things to impress people. Plus, I hate shopping for other people, I always feel bad afterwards, like I am just buying something just to buy something for them, and that it may have been a waste of money....... |

I enjoy purchasing extravagent gifts for people. Not to impress them, but because all of my friends have large families to support and never buy anything just for themselves, so on birthdays and holidays I always try to find something 'moderately extravagent' meaning that it is something I know they have been wanting for a while, but either couldn't afford, or couldn't justify the expense because the kids needed something. It is never anything extrordinary, but it makes them feel good (Ex: my sister-in-law had been wanting a pair of silk pajamas for a while, but wouldn't buy them for herself, her current PJ's had holes, so I got her the pair she'd been eyeing they cost $50 but it was worth it to see the look on her face and know that she wears them to bed every night) She said they make her feel like a Queen. |

I try to get gifts that a person would not buy for themselves. So, if you really know a person, then sometimes you can purchase something that they really want but wouldn't get themselves. This requires a lot of thought. |

I don't buy to impress either.I knew that my sister wanted these books and when I found them at a used bookstore,I got them for her. She knows they don't cost much but she doesn't care and neither do I :) |

Heck no I don't buy to impress. I'm a tightwad. ;-) I just had my baby shower on the 8th of November and the loot ranged from awesome nursery furniture all the way to baby outfits from Walmart. I couldn't imagine exchanging or returning any of the gifts. Each of them were given with a happy heart and to the best of the giver's ability. But with Christmas coming up and being married with a bunch of new in-laws, I am dreading the amount of people to buy for. |

I used to buy to impress, but it just kind of became pointless after awhile. The person is normally grateful for what they receive, and not the money that was spent in the process. When i buy someone something, it's my way of saying that i care about them and i think by knowing that is much greater than any amount of money. Nicely said. |

I think the best kind of gifts are the ones that you yourself make. It shows that you've taken time and effort to show them you care. |

In my family, we buy at garage sales, Goodwill and the Salvation Army as well as the standard stores. We look at the item, not where it came from. My best friend is different. Place of purchase and name of brand are very importmant. This year I got her a beautiful Lenox cat ornament on e-Bay for less than $20.00. I will not tell her either where her gift came from or its price. I'll just enjoy her enjoyment. |

I never worry about impressions. I love gifts that come the heart, regardless of cost. A macoroni necklace from my grandson will be just as dear as a diamond from my husband, probably more so. Maybe thats why I don't get lots of diamonds? LOL Give from the heart and give only what you can, those who recieve will never be disappointed either way. |

ToDieFor....that's different though. You're buying a gift for someone that may be somewhat costly but you're doing it because you want to make them happy. You're not doing it solely for the purpose of impressing others to up your self-esteem. I think your generosity is admirable. :~) |

Cosmic Freak...I guess we're a bit alike in that way then. We should be able to enjoy recieving a gift but it's hard sometimes if you feel the person giving it couldn't really afford it or did it out of guilt. Thanks for your thoughts. :) |

PrairieDawn, what you did is fine...you got your sister what she wanted and she was realistic enough to know that it doesn't matter if they weren't brand new. It's all about the thought that you did that for her. |

ShadowGhost....Ah, very wise words there. That's so cute too, "a macaroni necklace!" I can't wait for my son to be old enough to make me one. I don't know if I'll wear it in public but I'll surely wear it around the house! :o) |

If you don't wear it now, you will later, I promise. I'm so into appreciating my grandchildren and everything they give me. I wear some beautiful, handmade "jewels" with pride that each have given me. It makes their day and my patients love it. I've been asked many times about my " necklaces and bracelets" and recieved lots of "oohs and aww, that's soo sweet", hey! it means everything to me! These little guys love me! They make me the best gifts and I wear them proudly! |
