Gay Marriage - Ban or UnBan?

  Author: 62410  Category:(Discussion) Created:(11/21/2003 5:21:00 PM)

With all the talk in the news about the lifting of the gay marriage ban in Massachusetts, I thought I’d pose topic here and find out what you all think. I know the only reason why we have anti-sodomy laws and a ban on gay marriage is because the bible says it is “an abomination” on mankind. But I still don’t understand why our lawmakers or anyone else for that matter, even care if people partake of same-sex marriage. I’m not gay and I don’t even have any gay friends but I still don’t think it’s right for us to make laws about what a person does in their own bedroom, unless it pertains to the endangerment of a minor child. The bible only applies to all who believe in it and accept God as their savior – so I don’t understand how we can enact laws that pertain to an entire society or mixed faiths (some percentage of which may have another faith which tolerates it or may have no faith at all). Why is this even still an issue in our country??? What do you think -- should it be banned or unbanned? Scall

Date: 11/21/2003 5:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 16705    i have gay friends even though i'm not gay but i agree with you what people do in the privacy of their bedroom is their business. what right does the government have in telling someone who they can marry when they do crooked things and use taxpayers money for stupid stuff. i'd like to have one government official live on what i live on a month which is $572..00. lol Hamb918
Date: 11/21/2003 5:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 25756    I'm not gay, but I just I don't see why gay marriages should be banned in the first place. Who's it hurting? No one! Just because a person loves a person of the same sex doesn't mean that they should be treated unequally. Who cares so much about someone else's love life that they have to interefere with who they want to marry?
Date: 11/21/2003 6:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I totally agree with you on this one. What others do in the privacy of thier own homes and their lives should not be up to the government to decide.
Date: 11/21/2003 6:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    I favor the "civil union". If politicians want to define "marriage" as the union between one man and one woman, fine. A civil union would give the legal standing of a marriage with the attendant rights and responsibilities.
Date: 11/21/2003 6:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 50434    I think that people have it set in there minds that since the bible bans gays and there relationships that it should be lawfully just for them to get married. I think LOVE IS LOVE..LIVE AND LET LIVE! God is supposed to love all people of all sorts so why would he condem just one group? I think somewhere in history people just added to the bible putting in what they think is right and how things should be done. It should be no ones decision legally nor morally to decide who can be together. This whole gay issue is a bunch of hmmmm lets say hoopty hoop. People obviously have to much time on there hands to worry about something so petty, lawmakers need to worry about crimes that are being commmited and the light sentences some of these crimminals are getting and need to make laws that are justly fit to the crime. Its sad to see that are tax money are being wasted on such petty issues.
Date: 11/21/2003 6:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 53054    i think that same sex marriages are fine! Really who is the gov. to tell gay people how to live there lives...anyways cant they get married in another country? I think that there is nothing wrong in same sex marriages! and as a matter of fact it is none of the gov. business!
Date: 11/21/2003 6:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 29262    I agree, I do not think we should ban gay marriages. It's not their fault that they were born gay. WHy can't we just let them live a normal life? My sister has a gay friend. I am not gay but I think its wrong they treat them this way.
Date: 11/21/2003 6:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62410    It's so awesome to see this kind of support for humankind with such a unanimous consensus. Maybe we can make some changes in this country afterall. We are the future ;-) Scall
Date: 11/21/2003 6:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 51725    ban it , it's gross
Date: 11/21/2003 6:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 62401    I think it is a religios fight. Banning it would be pushing peoples religious beliefs on others. Lindsay
Date: 11/21/2003 7:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think why should someone tell you what to do in your own bedroom!
Date: 11/21/2003 7:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 29532    UN BAN IT! Gay marriages should be legal.
Date: 11/21/2003 11:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I think if they call it "civil union" it's more acceptable but if they called it marriage, I'd have an issue with that. Judging a person's personal lifestyle though, isn't for me to do.
Date: 11/22/2003 12:32:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62410    I wonder why we care so much WHAT we call it or define it - it is what it is and we all KNOW what it is! -- ferchrisssake! let's just get over it and let them live how they want to live!!!
Date: 11/22/2003 2:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 54570    All I know is we are headed down th primrose path to total destruction. Think of it. The end of it all. Shootings in school, removing of God from schools, couthouse's... everything. More violence everyday everywhere. Sex and cursing on regular... not cable or satellite.... television now. Youth backtalking to thier elders. Even teen pregnancy. There is so many implications to same sex marriges. The impact it will have on tomorrows youth. So much to rant about. I do know this though. Same sex marriges usually produce no offspring.... so it may die out or it may stay. I was brought up in a time when even the word sex itself got you a spanking. If you called someone a slang word for homosexual you toted a tail whipping from your parents. Today its become commonplace and accepted. I wish I could indeed go back thirty years or more to a time when it was so much simplier and easier.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 53689    SmoknJoe, I find it interesting that so many blame our nation's problems on things like "removing of God from schools, couthouse's", yet, most other countries don't have "God" in their schools and courthouse and don't nearly have the problems we have...how do you explain that? No, our problems have nothing to do with homosexuality or Religion..but it does have a lot to do with big buisness, big media and the unwillingness of judges to prosecute criminals to the full extent. I'll give you an example of this: A college student, a few months ago, got drunk and hit another college student (a girl) with his SUV. She died instantly. He was sentenced last week. The judge gave him 10 years, with 9 suspended...leaving him with a year that he will likely only serve only 3 months of. Things like that, were criminals only get a slap on the wrist...this is why our country is going down the drain. Not because two people, who happen to be of the same sex, are in love.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:47:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62410    SMOKIN' JOE: I don't see the connection between the same-sex relations and the degradation of our society, though I do see the degradation and like you I wish we could get back to a time when things were a little more simple -- but wish in one hand - spit in the other... Scall
Date: 11/22/2003 9:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62410    TARHEEL GIRL: I agree completely -- it is big business and big media the undermine our society -- not same-sex relations. Scall
Date: 11/22/2003 9:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 62118    "I wish I could indeed go back thirty years or more to a time when it was so much simplier and easier." - People kept more secrets back then, there was less tolerance. Maybe for you it was simplier and easier, but for those who were unaccepted, would have to live lies and with guilt.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:55:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62410    Author 62118: Excellent point about the secrets and lies. Scall
Date: 11/22/2003 6:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I think how it's defined does matter very much so...it is a DIFFERENT type of marriage. It's a union between two people of the same sex, not two of a different sex. I see nothing wrong with wanting there to be a differentiation as that is all it is...some define themselves gay and others call them heterosexual. Some people are tall some are short...it's not discrimination when defining something and so I STAND by my opinion in my previous comment. That is how I feel and that's how I will always feel on this subject.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    I think its funny how a post about two homosexuals wanting to get married, and Christians get bashed for their belief about it. I don't see anyone bashing the Muslims, who's religion also bans it, or Jews, or any other religion who preaches against homosexuality. "Just blame the Christians, that way we'll always have a scapegoat" And as far as Smokin Joe goes, he's right. When this country HAD God in schools, prayer in schools, and all, I don't remember not being able to carry a backpack, because someone may have a gun. Nor did I have to worry about the Crips or the Bloods driving by and shooting for the heck of it. Sorry, but there seems to be a real correlation here, that non-Christians don't want to see. Fine, don't see it, but honestly, what's wrong with teaching a child in school "Thou Shall Not Kill"? "Thou Shall Not Steal" "Thou shall not commit adultery". Most parents are not staying in the home, they are out working, so its up to somebody to teach our kids basic values.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 16442    It isnt up to teachers to teach my children morals, Crash, that is MY job as a parent. What if that teacher has no morals, you still want them teaching them to your children? I think some good old fashion butt beating is what is missing in children these days, not lack of God. The correlation comes in when parents decided to stop punishing their children (which happens to be along the same timeline as the prayer taken out of school) when children learn no consequences for their actions, they continue those actions and push the limit even further. So until parents decide to PARENT their children (even if the commandments were put back up in schools) our children will continue to spiral out of control.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    It is NEVER up to anyone to teach your children morals or values. Your morals and values are indicative of what your child will learn, whether both parents work or not. The responsibility for a child and his or her upbringing belong within the family. Regardless of belief, origin, or sexual preference, the concept of right and wrong is never far from the conscience. Children learn from love and acceptance or from hate and intolerance.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    It still doesn't hurt to have an outside influence also backing the moral issue. My thing is, any more, most parents work, and don't spend the time to teach their children morals. I'm not saying they should give classes on morals, but if they help to emphasize right and wrong, then that will help teach a child. As far as spanking a child, I agree. When a parent spanks a child in Wal-Mart, for throwing a tantrum, and someone calls the cops, because the child got a spanking..Its not their business. Now if the child was getting BEAT, definately. I'd call too, but children do need spankings at times, to correct their behavior.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    Its like this, if you teach your child that "cheating is wrong" and you are the ONLY one in the world who says it, quite a few children are going to ignore it, because no one else is reinforcing that same teaching. Am I goinig to raise my child with no morals, and hope the schools teach them? No, but a lot of people any more don't care, so if someone DOES teach them, then maybe they will learn.

Date: 11/22/2003 8:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 62118    Crash, whats the point? there are laws against murder and thief, putting up thoses rules would be pointless. The Christians get blamed for their intolerance and trying to enforce their beliefs, its the christians trying to remove freedom for everyone but themselves. Obviously they are going to get blamed.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 16442    Outside influence is fine, but why should that include the Christian God? Thats where I get thrown, take the Christian God away and children go nuts, or so some of you would have us believe. That is so obviously not true that I am not sure why I am even addressing it, but in essence what you, that think that God should be put back in schools, are saying is that children of atheists/buddists/Muslims/Wiccans/etc in this world are little demons with no real knowledge of morals and right and wrong since they have no learning of the Christian God?
Date: 11/22/2003 8:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    Its the Christians trying to remove freedom for everyone else? Seems to me, that most people are trying to get rid of the Christian ideal. Like, for instance 1: No prayer in schools. 2: Trying to get "Under God" removed from the pledge. 3: Trying to remove any and all things having to do with "God" from ANY public place. Yeah, seems like someone's getting their freedoms taken away, and its not the Christians.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    Children that are Wiccan, Muslim, Buddists, etc are taught the same basic tenets, so whether you label what they teach as "Christian, Muslim, Buddist, Wiccan, or whatever, doesn't specifically matter.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    Love and acceptance or hate and intolerance, we have the choice. Our children learn from those choices. They take from how we live our lives and what we believe in and what we care for.
Date: 11/22/2003 8:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 16442    And what is so wrong with that, why should people that arent Christian be subjected to Christian messages every time they turn around? What makes Christians any better than any other faith? Guess what, this is America and we have Freedom Of Religion. So, if you want to put up the 10 commandments in schools, go ahead, but be sure and put EVERY other religions "Code of Ethics" on the wall to and when you end your prayers in school, make sure they are directed to all the higher powers of all religions. Christians DO think they have some special authorization on religion in the US and I think with our many different cultures here, people are tired of it.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    Fine, put up other religions code of ethics. If it helps the kids, then more power to them.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 62118    Crash - Those where priviledges, not rights. If you want the world to have freedom, let everyone have it, dont just favour one group.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    Fine, leave it up to parents to instill discipline in their children. In a world where parents aren't paying their child support, where people can kill their unborn kids, and call it "pro-choice". The ones who drive their car, with their two sons in it, into a pond. Where they kill their wife, and unborn son, and dump them into the ocean. Works for me. I on the other hand, will try to protect and teach my son to watch out for the other idiots in the world who didn't have someone to teach them, because they didn't have anyone that cared.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 62118    "The ones who drive their car, with their two sons in it, into a pond. Where they kill their wife, and unborn son, and dump them into the ocean." - These are illegal, what makes you think if someone told them Oh God doesn't like it, it would stop these people? Clearly the law says its wrong, that didn't stop them, changing it with God would have little effect.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    Crash, I support my grandsons because their father doesn't pay child support. I don't bad mouth or condemn him. I accept that someone has to take care of my grandsons. I do the best I can. And it comes from my heart, I love them unconditionally. A friend of mine was murdered by someone of another race, I don't despise everyone of that race or color because of her murder even though I will never understand or accept why she died. Someone such as Susan Smith, I can never understand or even forgive, it isn't in my heart. Those who hurt children or kill them, I have no sympathy, no understanding. That is beyond my human capibilities. I rely on gut instinct, and the bottom line is always, people either care or they don't, they either hold human life sacred and uphold it, they leave life to end by natural cause or in their own evilness they take that life and THEY end it. In the end I truly believe that only those with the coldest of heart, those who were most unloved or neglected could commit such an atrocity. All others must be mentally ill. What else could ever explain the lack of human compassion?
