"You'll need a dress."
"Oh." I gulped. "Umm. I did not bring - "
"Don't worry about it; we'll get you one. That was what I came here for. I knew you probably didn't have one, soo.." He was looking down at my scuffed, worn but serviceable boots. "And maybe a pair of - "
"Alright, Gerath, who pays for it all?" I sat a hand on a hip. He looked flustered, but replied steadily enough. "I was thinking it would be a present from me...because you're the most interesting female I've talked to, and you've given me intelligent conversation as well as something nice to look at."
It was my turn to blush.
I could feel it rising above collar height, to infuse my cheeks and ears.
What could I say to that?
"T-thank you..."
He grinned and leaned in to say softly in my ear, "It was your turn to blush anyway, considering how much of it I've been doing lately."
"Well, I did enough of it having to deal with Nettaya, rogue!" I punched his arm.
The next moment I was crushed against his chest, halfway smothered, my arms pinioned against me, and the gravelly rumble of his laugh vibrated through me. I thought I might struggle a bit or...
"Be nice, or you might have to pay half of it!" I stopped immediately, thinking of the strange coin in my possession. He turned me loose and we wended our way to the shopping district of the WestMarket. As we headed for the clothing booths, a large sign posted on a public well caught my eye. It read:
Tournament Race Today!
Where: WestMarket Square
When: 4:00 pm
Who: Anyone and Everyone
I began to notice more of the signs all over the place. There was even one on the open-air booth we went to first to browse clothing.
"I like this," Gerath said, gesturing to a green, high-necked dress with many tiered ruffles.
"Ummm.." I looked apprehensively at the thing. I wondered how I would move around with so much material on the skirt.
"No, I mean the material," he grinned at me and fingered the fabric of a sleeve. I let my fingers trail down the other sleeve, delighted at the feel of it against my skin.
"My, this is nice," I murmured. "Are we buying just material and having a taylor custom make it? Or are we getting one already made?"
He shifted his feet, growing a bit nervous. "It might be best if we fit one to you..."
-- Hmm, why does he seem nervous?? :) And about that race...?
