The Blue Scarf --Just a Simple Man--
I tipped off a girl and sent her on her way she left a little scarf blue with a yellow daffodil in one corner it was so delicate reminded me of her though her eyes were not blue but her skin was just as fragile the life within her seemingly prone to blow and nearly fade away but still substantial she was a pretty thing the girl who left her scarf I thought no more of her but that this feminine item needed to return to its owner I did not think of how the girl's lingering perfume clung stubbornly to the thin cloth or how a bright strand of her hair was caught threaded in it
why I bothered to track her down I will never really know but I found her somehow on the arm of another man who was wealthy and flicked ash carelessly from his cigar her brown eyes flickered once at me as she drew the scarf through her gloved hands and said to me I could keep it I should have left her with it in her hands right there, with her arm linked with another man but I did not something in me bade me tell her that her face so perfectly oval with skin as delicate as a breath could have crushed a harder man and her sparkling hair could have entwined a wiser man than I but I was too simple to feel within her level the sophisticated one of fancy scarves with tiny daffodils embroidered on them
she caught me when I turned I aimed to go and leave her perfume in the breeze but she turned me and looked me in the face and left a mark on me I cannot seem to erase when I had sent her on her way so long ago maybe she saw something in a simple man she left a scarf and maybe more than that but I am just a simple man and now I live with her mark just wondering about why that blue scarf was left when I sent her on her way
