Why It Was Called 'The Good Old Days'

Lots of times the younger generation cannot figure out why some oldsters refer to the past as the Good Old Days....

Maybe the oldsters just long for simpler times and a slower pace of life that let them enjoy their time here on earth more and to enjoy the people they are close to.

In the kitchen on the wall, most only had one phone. And no need for recording things, because someone was always home.

Most only had one television set and there were probably only three or four channels they could get, even with rabbit ears... But there was always something on one of them worth watching... Vulgar language, nudity and sex scenes were not permitted.

Drugs in school meant that the school nurse or principal had a couple of aspirin to give to an ailing student.

For snacks there were potato chips, that tasted like a potato chip. And if you wanted flavor, you had Lipton's onion dip.

Store bought snacks were rare, because the woman of the house liked to cook. There was no label with a hundred warnings which made absolutely no sense.

On weekends most of the family did things together because they liked to have fun together.

They didn't play baseball or football on video games. They got together with friends and actually played softball or touch football for real.

Doctor's not only made housecalls, they had manners, and were really concerned about the patients. Often he was your family friend, and you did not sit up at night worrying because you didn't have insurance.

Folks with modest jobs could go to the store to shop casually. When it was time to check out, they would pay for their purchases with cash money. They seldom carried thousands in personal debt, unless they were a big time businessman.

The air they breathed was fresh, and they could eat all the fish they could catch without worrying about being exposed to Mercury.

They didn't have Spam emails. They got real letters from friends and relatives and loved ones. Many of them kept them and treasured them as parts of their lives and their family histories.

Oh sure they had their problems then, just like we do today. There were wars. There was discrimination. There was poverty. Sadly, none of those problems seem to have been solved, and some just seem to have gotten worse.

Life seemed so much easier then and they had time to think on the good things in life.

But time moves on and so do we, nothing stays the same.

Sometimes it is sad when we look back and realize that we have lost some very beautiful things in life.

Date: 2/9/2004 10:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 36956    This all hit home! I remember when my family actually made plans to go have fun. The rabbit ears never did work worth a dang. When the phone rang we were allowed a whole 10 minutes to talk. I miss those days!!!
Date: 2/9/2004 10:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 62487    I am a youngster, yet I actually yearn for those days, I barely remember when things like picnics and town dances were the most important dates to look forward toooo....I miss the intimacy and closness people had with each other then, it is sad times we are living in,, thank you for reminding me of the more important things!!!!1>>>>>tamara:)
Date: 2/9/2004 11:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 28193    I don't miss those days! Technology has come so far, I feel like I am living in another world. I wish I would have had a computer when I was a kid. We didn't even get a color TV until I was 14 years old. LOL.
Date: 2/10/2004 1:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 13897    well at least now, everyone is able to vote.. there aren't any more Jim Crow laws to keep blacks from having equal rights.. women are able to get out to the work place and have more opportunity than they ever did. art and writing have opened so much that people can do whatever they want, without restriction. people can express themselves about politics and society without fearing that they'll be put on a black list and never able to get a job. i dunno, i don't think the "good old days" were as perfect as people portray them.
Date: 2/10/2004 1:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 8024    the good ole days were just that good .. we should all strive to focus on making the present days better ... this is an excellent post I believe in the good ole days ... they got us here though ...yesterday wasn't perfect mb but with a little help today can be a much better place ..
Date: 2/10/2004 5:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 53155    I am only 24, so I dont know much about the good ole day but reading what you wrote and what cc28 said...if only we could mix the ole days with the new days this world might be worth living in :-)
Date: 2/10/2004 7:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 22370    I remember how my Grandmother use to talk about how she would walk to school, in 12feet of snow, barefoot, how there was no AC or heating for the house, no computer, no tv, no phone,...I think I would have honesly gone completely crazy..but on the other hand, it would be nice to get some peace and quite..Peace and Love
Date: 2/10/2004 7:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    I can remember when folks used to help each other out and didn't charge an arm and a leg to do so. Back then there was no poisonous spraying of berry bushes ,apple, plum or pear trees out in the country so many people went out to gather the fruit to can for the winter. ( no home freezers then) Years later when I was grown and had my own family, in the summer of 1953 I canned 100 quarts of blackberries while carrying my 7 month old daughter around with me because she was teething.lol. ( this was in July.. no A/c then either!) I priced some blackberries this past summer and they gave you 1/2 cup for $3.00! I remember too when someone passed away that someone in the community would come to the house to collect money to buy flowers ... no one ever told us how much we should give like they do today, if we could only contribute a dime we were thanked for whatever we could give! My dad would hire our neighbor to bring his workhorse over to plow our garden in the spring and paid the man $2.00. I can remember being sent to the only store in town to get 10 cents worth of cheese because my mom was going to make macaroni and cheese for sunday dinner. If we ever needed to make a telephone we had to walk a long way to the "Switch board" and tell the lady operator who to call and what to say...( our Mom would send a note with us).She would make the call for us and we would give her 10 cents. A loaf of bread was 8 cents at that time or 2 loaves for 15 cents. I can remember the first time I ever tasted Jello. Yes, I remember the " Good Old Days" very well ... and I miss them.
Date: 2/10/2004 7:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 160    This is a great post. I also have fond memories, ones that I regret my kids and grandkids cannot have. The scene of this world is changing, things seem to go from bad to worse. Safety is such a hugh issue that it robs us of basic freedoms. How terribly sad. One thing that I do want to bring out is that while health care is not cheap as are prescriptions, people are living much longer than they did a hundred years ago. And the quality of life is better. We no longer hear of diseases that once spread like wildfire and killed thousands, in some cases wiping out entire generations, this thanks to vaccines and drug companies. But I still miss those days when life was carefree and secure.
Date: 2/10/2004 9:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Two things have impacted the world to today for the worse compared to "the good old days". Lawyers and Lawsuits (personal responsibility seems to be a thing of the past, product and personal liability have had more to do with the loss of good jobs and competition in retailing than anything else. There are two ways to survive in many businesses today- Get so large that nothing can hurt you or move outside the country) The other item stating with Woodward and Bernstein breaking the Watergate story (which was a fantastic job on their part), is investigative/ sensationalized journalism and news becoming more of an entertainment medium than information. It has changed the way in which every part of life is conducted. Political leaders don't concern themselves with facts and doing the right thing, they concern themselves with pandering to the press which shapes and skews public opinion. We make our decisions based not on facts but on sound bites.
Date: 2/10/2004 10:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    I think the last generation of people to experience a slower pace of life was those around the 1950s. It's a fact of life that everyone regards their generation as the best. As regards having a slower pace of life...anyone can attain that. It is a state of mind.
Date: 2/10/2004 10:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 13897    hhehe Jessyca- your grandma told you that she walked in 12 ft of snow? was it uphill both ways? lol! sounds like a tall tale to me!!
Date: 2/10/2004 11:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Koolade is right, but the 50's were more like the clueless time, then there was that whole war in Korea thing.
Date: 2/10/2004 11:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 42259    I'm only 21 so you might not think I'd remeber the 'good old days' but seriously, stuff seemed better even in the days when I was a little kid.I've felt that, even though I enjoy the internet and tv, I'd have more time and enjoy life without them, like I did when I was a kid (we didn't have a tv then-too poor lol).Good post :)
Date: 2/10/2004 12:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 62456    Great post. It would be great to have lived in the early 1900's (better if you're a man though) I loved hearing stories my Great Grandmother and Grandmother told. I grew up in the 60's/70's and I don't miss those times. I lived near Los Angeles and there was violence and unrest. I think it was a scarey time to be a kid. I like now and look forword to the future. IsisKat
Date: 2/10/2004 1:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    As a child of the 60’s, I remember some of the “good old days”. Time puts a golden glow on a lot of memories that were not always that great. There were some things from that time that can and should be continued now. We can’t bring back the simple more trusting days but we can take simple steps that will make things a little better. Families spending time together is the most important one. Make some homemade meals as time and finances allow. Make time limits for phones, don’t spend hours on phones, computers, or television. Actually talk to family members, get to know them. Do family activities on the weekends. Take your child to work with you occasionally, if permitted.
Date: 2/10/2004 2:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 27534    The good old days comes from all in the rememberence of youth. The freshness of learning, experiencing life. The toils and worries were someone elses problems.....usually those called Mom&Dad.....and the issues the youth dealt with was all about discovery.
Date: 2/10/2004 2:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 17014    Yeah...I remember when there were family values and we didn't sit around and watch a screen or monitor all day. When fast food was Treat. When matchbox cars were the best toy you could find...kids don't play with those cars anymore, or the action figures...they sit with blank stares playing video games when the void in their brains could be being filled with knowledge reading a book. It's sad that some homes don't even have a kitchen table anymore, they sit around the tv letting it entertain them instead of entertaining eachother. *sigh* I would love to have grown up farther back than the 70s and 80s. I would have loved to grow up in the 40s or 50s...:)
Date: 2/10/2004 3:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    to me, the good old days were the 80's. i LOVE the 80's. lol. but my parents and grandparents use to refer to good old days all the time. and it didn't sound so bad =)
Date: 2/10/2004 8:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 9059    *sniffle* awww man I want to live in "The Good Ol' Days" NOT FAIR! why am I forced to live in such a fast paced world when I was born to kick back and take my time? lol Great post!
Date: 2/10/2004 8:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 62552    Less forgery back then too... >>Bageera<<
Date: 2/10/2004 8:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3125    Whoa!..Didn't mean to let this post get away from me.. LOL.. Ya know, I don't think it's so much as what we have gained in the name of progress and technology, but it is what we have done with these things and what we have lost in the process. In an attempt to get ahead, it's as if we have become as a bunch of busy ants scurrying about to prepare for tomorrow. The most important and simple things are many times overlooked in the hassle and grind of every day living in an attempt to get ahead. We tend to let the material things in life take precedence. It seems that many times we do not stop to enjoy nor do we teach our children the important and simple things in life.
Date: 2/10/2004 8:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 39887    Television at our house was rare but when we saw it, we watched whatever our parents put on it and LIKED it! Children respected parents and there was no back talk because we knew what a real whipping was, it made real people out of us too. I grew expecting what I would have in life, I would work to get it. Oh yes, the good old days, I wish I had them back for my grandchildren to enjoy! They could play in the yard without worry of getting snatched! Wow, times were good!
Date: 2/10/2004 8:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    I am trying my darnedest to offer my children what i can give them of the good old days. We don't have cable...we have rabbit ears and about 5 channels...we don't have video games but instead bikes and sports equipment. Unfortunately I cannot completely shield my children from everything, I am doing my best to give them a sense of an innocent childhood. Thanks for the repost, this touches on all my anger with the world we live in today.
Date: 2/10/2004 8:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 12103    Pretty neat post..thanks for sharing

Date: 2/11/2004 2:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    so true hun, I know we have to move with the times, but goodness me, we seem to have lost the things that were so important, like respect, love for our oldies, and were so glad to have the basics in life that did seem so uncomplicated, but all these things seemed like a hundred years ago....hugs
Date: 2/11/2004 3:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 30229    OMG, I love this post!!!! BOOKMARKED!!!

Date: 7/31/2005 10:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    This is such a cool post..Sometimes I wish I could live in the past for a few days, just to see what it was like.
