Connection
(the beginings of chapter two)
The morning sun ripped through the stark branches and bare windows forcing Corina out of bed much earlier than she would've liked. It was Saturday, October 4th, the first Saturday of the rest of her life. Regretfully pulling back the covers, she slowly slid out of her bed and into her faux leopard fur house shoes.
She loved the little cottage with it's window seats and countless breathtaking views. Arkansas was handmade by God for all to appreciate and embrace. And on this day, Corina could see for miles over the hills and through the thickets. She could see the water glistening on a nearby lake and began to relish this new found peace.
She spotted grey skies on the horizon and once again she let her memory slip beyond her willingness. For a brief moment she allowed the pain to wash over her and then she remembered what her ex-boss last told her. 'That which is in the past, shall stay in the past,' she thought and walked towards one of the many stacked boxes in her new living room and grabbed one marked Kitchen.
While searching for her box of hot chocolate, there was a knock at the door. It frightened Corina so much that the box and all it's contents went crashing to the floor. Rice, beans, oatmeal, flour and a spilled bag of sugar covered every space and crevice of the spanish tile floor. Corina moved with caution to the door and stood on the tips of her toes to look out the peephole.
Outside a man with an enormous bouquet of exotic flowers waited with a docile look on his square, weathered face. 'No one knows where I am, and just exactly who would be sending me flowers anyway?' She opened the door and signed a reciept for the delivery man, took the flowers and walked quickly into the entry way.
She pulled a miniture white envelope from it's holder and managed to get the card inside out enough to read the message: WELCOME TO YOUR NEW HOME. There was no name or anything else on the plain white card. She quickly set the vase down on a dresser near the door and ran outside to try and catch the delivery man.
His delivery van was just turning around on her long entryway when she stopped him. "Excuse me sir," In a strained voice she continued as lightly as possible, "Do you happen to know which neighbor gave me the gorgeous arrangement?"
"M'am, we were requested to fill out the card exactly as you read. The sender wanted to remain anonymous." He politely tipped his hat and drove off down the driveway, turning onto the county road and was out of sight within the minute due to the tree line and the cottage's placement on this particular hill.
Feeling all to uneasy, Corina walked back into the entry way and took the arrangement to the kitchen. When she saw the mess on the kitchen floor, she sighed, set the flowers on the center of her dining table and went to the pantry for her broom and dustpan. The fear had set in again and she felt that the unsettling feeling in the pit of her stomach was well warranted this time and she didn't like it one bit.
