Kidnapping, Rape Trial

A strip search, a mysterious caller posing as a police officer, and a manager accused of rape and kidnapping. It's a strange case unfolding in a Rapid City courtroom.

A 19 year old Rapid City woman says she was raped and held hostage for three hours at the restaurant where she worked. According to police reports, on June 5th, 52 year old Allan Mathis, an assistant manager at Hardees, took a phone call from a person who claimed to be a police officer. He said he was investigating a report of a stolen purse. The caller said the 19 year old matched the description of the thief; he told Mathis to conduct a strip search.

The victim testified that for the next 3 hours, Mathis told her to strip naked, do jumping jacks, bend over, and sit on his lap. The defense attorney admits a crime was committed, but not by Mathis. The lawyer says a cruel prankster made his client believe he was a real police officer. He says Mathis didn't enjoy what he was told to do, and the same type of hoax was tried at a another Rapid City restaurant.

The entire 3 hours was caught on surveillance tape, and will be seen by the jury this week.

Mathis is free on bond. If convicted of kidnapping, he could face life in prison. The rape charge carries a maximum of 25 years in prison. Authorities are still investigating who made the prank phone call, but they did trace it to a Florida pay phone

I think that this is the stupidest incident to ever happen..I feel really bad for the girl. That guy is an idoit and should have known something was up..with that call.

Date: 2/10/2004 4:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 62344    the whole thing is kind of weird. Why would you do something that a cop on the phone (not even there) tells you to do. I think Mathis was behind it somehow.
Date: 2/10/2004 4:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    *sigh* again Florida takes it on the chin. A 19-year old Woman didn't know enough to keep her close on? This almost sounds like a made-up story. Of course, it could have been some of the Miami Crackers....:):):)
Date: 2/10/2004 4:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    Oh Pulllease!!! That guy just happened to follow directions from a supposed police officer? Is he a total moron or just plain stupid??
Date: 2/10/2004 4:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I mean "clothes".
Date: 2/10/2004 4:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    Ummmm Spirit Child..How would it be HER fault that this guy raped her?? I mean you said she didnt know enough to leave her clothes on...We dont even know all the circumstances here..If she was raped then I am sure she didnt have much choice about the clothing part.
Date: 2/10/2004 5:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    LL-I am implying that unless the Woman had a weapon on her, or was forcibly raped, she would be a fool to disrobe, and do jumping jacks, because her boss said a caller said a thief "looked like her". Please, my 19-year old daughter would have called "911"
Date: 2/10/2004 5:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    not to downpaly what an animal the boss was. Who knows what that phone call was really about? It could have been an employee calling into work! The only people who know, are the former boss, and the caller on the other end.
Date: 2/10/2004 5:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    BTW-I amend my statement, my 19-year old daughter would have clocked her former boss, and THEN called "911". She is a polite young lady, but we come from a law enforcement family.
Date: 2/10/2004 5:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    I think there is more to this story than what we are reading. There had to be a reason why she obeyed, and Im sure she protested alot before finally doing as she was told. The post also does not say if he was on the phone with the "police officer" the whole time, or if this Mathis dude just continued on for three hours on his own waiting for God only knows what..A cop to arrive?? For himself to get his cheap thrills at this girls expense??
Date: 2/10/2004 5:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    This is too weird.
Date: 2/11/2004 12:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 26363    Agreed! And this guy is a manager?! Me wonders if he actually knew the 'cop' on the other end of the line. Sounds like a prank gone too far. MorningGlory
Date: 2/13/2004 3:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 177    Someone's going away for a long time I hope.
Date: 2/13/2004 3:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 177    This alleged incident is just crazy & stupid enough to be true.
