Family Stories

Everyone hears stories of what their grandparents or great grandparents did back in the old country. I think it would be fun for USMer's to share their stories. I'll start it out. My maternal grandmother’s family was known for being ornery, difficult and just plain stubborn. Here is one reason why. My Great-great grandfather emigrated from Germany about 1862. He became a prosperous farmer in Gratiot County, Michigan. A short bio of his life was entered in the 1910 Gratiot County Who's Who. A very interesting story was included in this entry. My Great-great grandfather grew up with this story. It happened to HIS grandfather. His grandfather owned a small farm in Germany at the time Napoleon came marching through the countryside. Napoleon received new supplies and recruits by raiding the local farms. The farmer discovered his that his son and his horses had been requisitioned by the French Army. He went to the French camp. He demanded to see Napoleon. The story goes that Napoleon agreed to see this ornery German farmer. The farmer demanded that his son and his horses be returned. Napoleon returned them. I have a Great-great-great-great-grandfather that faced down Napoleon.

Date: 2/11/2004 2:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 62552    Apparently, somewhere down the track I'm related to one of the queens of Sweden... mind you I'm only going by what my oma told me and that's a very risky thing to do, considering she was a daydreamer and all. Maybe I should go check it out! Because of my last name I get called "Frodo" a lot, ie: Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings. My dad's side of the family are Bagginses and my mum's side are Brandybucks and Tooks :) >>Bageera<<
Date: 2/19/2004 8:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 11097    Wow, that's really interesting! Cool story :)! I do not know that much about my great-grandparents but I know my mother's father's mother was from Italy! On my father's side my grandfather and his father were both in the army, so was my father. My grandfather was in Korea, my father in Vietnam. I also know that my nationalities are Irish, German, Italian, and Danish. My family was related to a great Danish princess named Elizabeth I believe. We also have "Viking" in our bloodline. This post has inspired me to learn more about my family history, thanks for sharing! :)
