American Idol Season III............~Covered by SpaceCase

The phone lines are now open as the latest season of the popular varity show is now underway. This year, voting is sure to be tough as demonstrated by tonight's first group of eight semi-finalists. At the end of each show, viewers are allowed to call in and vote and the top two from the next eight shows go on to the final competition round and compete for the American Idol title. There is also a wild card week where previously eliminated participants have another chance at the big time.

I will stick to the comfortable format I created last year to share my views of this year's fresh faces and their levels of talent as well as offer the judges opinions and any juicy gossip that errupts during this third season of American Idol.

To vote for the following performers, dial 1-866-IDOLS-## (their corresponding number)

#01 Diana Digarmo - "I Got The Music In Me" - This 16 year old Georgian most definitely had the music flowing through her! Refreshing and youthful, her voice is in contrast very soulful!! I was impressed as were all three judges.

#02 Marque Lynch - "Wind Beneath My Wings" - (Missed his age and occupation, I think he's from Mississippi) Marque offered a very soulful rendition to one of my favorite songs, he had a super vocal range and fabulous stage presense. He wasn't bad lookin' either ;) After only two performances, I'm already deeply impressed and a little nervous about my own vote. Marque dedicated the song to his mom which the crowd and I loved, but Simon wasn't as impressed with. He felt the song choice was an "ultra-safe" one, a pattern that continues through out the show. Randy noted his growth as a performer since their last meeting and Paula said she was proud of him.

#03 Ashley Thomas - "Crazy" - Ashley's a 23 year old mortgage broker from Irvine, CA. From the moment she began singing I thought, if she's anything like me, she's been singing that song since she was at least 12 years old... So yeah, it was good for ten years worth of practicing! Otherwise I totally agreed when Simon when he said he felt like he was at a rodeo. Of course Paula didn't agree with that. My final opinion is that tonight was the last we've seen of her until she gets offered a talk show ;)

#04 Katie Webber - "Flash, Bam, Alakazaam" - Katie's a 22 year old college student from Santa Cruz, CA. Tonight she wowed and dazzled the crowd with a funtastic jazz nummber. Folks, I was impressed, she's my number two choice tonight in fact. I just felt she was amazingly fresh and chose a perfect song to display her range and spark! Simon said it reminded him of the Jazz Club singer in the movie "Lost In Translation" which incidently had me lost in translation, but that's another post for another time. Anyhow, it was still a compliment since one of the only things I remember about the movie was the group's name Salsalito and their performance of Scarborough Faire!

#05 Erskine Walcott - "Open Arms" - Can we say name change? I would if I were this 23 year old Las Vegas dancer and singer (duh ;) I felt like I was watching Karaoke on TV which is a bit worse than being there in person!! I felt if he was going to choose such a simple song as Open Arms, then he could've given it more of a personal touch than his attempt. I was not impressed and the judges weren't too enthusiast either, Simon marked it another "safe" choice.

#06 Jennifer Hudson - "Imagine" - This 22 year old from the southside of Chicago pulled my attentions completely away from the writing pad, so I only have a few notes, LOL Awesome performance, Lennon's "Imagine" always brings tears to my eyes, and her powerful version filled me with pride!! Unfortunately, Randy wasn't blown away, but Simon noted the crowd's enthusiasm which she provoked with her emotional rendition of the powerful icon of a song. She asked Simon if he liked her outfit...he said that leather and nurses have always been at the top of his list...and she came back with, "You'd better not come to my hospital Simon" and was shooed off the stage before opening her mouth any wider. I'm a stickler for presense and manners, so even though her performance was ace in my book, her attitude knocked her down to #3 for me :(

#07 Matthew Metzger - "Walkin' In Memphis" - This guy's going for his second attempt at the desired idol title, but I only see him Walkin' home to Cinncinnati, Ohio tomorrow after his number isn't pulled from the hat. The vocals weren't strong enough for Randy or me for that matter, Paula was blindsided by "that spark" that Simon recognized to be similar to Clay's...so the young ladies voting might over-rule me on this one, but my opinion is simply, YAWN!

#08 Fantasia Barrino - "Let's Give Them Something To Talk About" - Can we all just say WOW!!!! I couldn't write, she had me from the very first note to the very last, hooked and wanting more!! She definitely has a Macy Gray quality to her voice-- whether she wants to admit it or not! The fact is, it works for her! Her stage presence was professional and endearing, the absolute best performance of the night and season so far! Can you tell who my number one pick is?? ;) Paula said this year's show needs her, and Simon says she doesn't even need this show!! Ladiess-- she's that powerful!

So that's it guys and dolls...come talk to me about our favorite show!! Let's get this party started right, RIGHT...let's get this party started CRAZY!!!

Date: 2/10/2004 6:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    Katie was my #1 pick tonight. I like Matthew, he does have a great presence and I think his vocals will get better. Jennifer is just too sweet! Fantasia just bugs me. She is a great performer, she is full of personality, she has a great voice that annoys the heck outta me. I get chills when she sings and at the same time Im wishing she would just stop. Whats up with that? LOL Im so glad to see your posts!
Date: 2/10/2004 6:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    Woohooo!! Thank you SpaceCase for posting this..I cant believe I missed the show tonight, but this is the next best thing! Wildcard eh?? I would like them to bring back Scooter Girl! I know most didnt like her but I thought she added "spark" and would have been great to watch!
Date: 2/10/2004 6:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    I haven't seen it yet! So I'll comment on this post after I see it! Still got a little over an hour to go! I was hoping you were gonna do this again! :D
Date: 2/10/2004 6:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    that's hilarious!! LOL I feel that Matthew has had his chance to get better considering that this was his second attempt. I feel like there was something keeping him from giving his all tonight...whether it be nerves or what, I'm afraid he might be going back to his substitute teaching job sooner than later :p
Date: 2/10/2004 7:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    I liked Scooter girl and felt she had a beautiful and richly developed voice. I did feel that she's better suited for Broadway, but would enjoy seeing her get a second chance :) I'm glad y'all enjoyed the post as much as I did writing it! I love practicing a t being an entertainment reporter and you guys make it so much more fulfilling! Thanks :)
Date: 2/10/2004 7:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    Moonie, I couldn't help myself! It was so much fun last year! I'll see you in a bit, enjoy the show!
Date: 2/10/2004 7:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I voted for Fantasia and Katie so I agree with your post 100%. Great post!!! Love,
Date: 2/10/2004 7:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i loved your up-dates on the show last season, and i am happy to see you doing them again =) although nobody will compare to Clay in my eyes, I did enjoy some of the performances. I really liked katie. i thought she did a great job! I also liked matthew. I thought he did the song very good. those are the two i would like to see go through.
Date: 2/10/2004 7:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    Great to see you AE & Cage!!!
Date: 2/10/2004 7:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I feel like I just came back to the American Idol club or something....LOL. Love,
Date: 2/10/2004 7:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    If you compare Matthew's version of Walkin' In Memphis with the original version by Mark COhn or even Lonestar's more recent version, I believe you will recognized the difference. There is a true level of soul that Matthewe just didn't reach in that song...
Date: 2/10/2004 7:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    AE, that's just what I was hoping for :):):)
Date: 2/10/2004 7:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I thought Matthew was really cute, but his voice just didn't cut it tonight for me. I don't think he will make it tomorrow, but he might be brought back for the wildcard show. That's what happened with Clay last year, remember? Love,
Date: 2/10/2004 7:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i remember everything that happened with Clay last year. LOL. honestly, i do think they will bring scooter girl back for the wild card show.
Date: 2/10/2004 7:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    LMBO @ Cage!!!! You go girl!!!
Date: 2/10/2004 7:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 54968    I think Fantasia did awesome! I also like the turkey wrap girl. LOL! I forgot her name tho!
Date: 2/10/2004 8:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 54968    Ooh! I loved scooter girl!!! They should have kept her! :(
Date: 2/10/2004 8:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    I hate Scooter Girl. She's an idiot and I was overjoyed when I saw she didn't make it to the top thirty-two. I got the vibe she was crazy; she really freaked me out. Can't stand her. Fantasia on the other hand is someone I will be rooting for. Along with "Pen Salesman". :)
Date: 2/10/2004 8:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    Jennifer Hudson was the turkey wrap girl, but I can't figure out who the pen salesman was!
Date: 2/10/2004 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    Was out this evening - Getting ready to watch the tape now. I'll be back!
Date: 2/10/2004 8:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    BTW - Did you catch the "She Bangs" kid on Ryan today? So funny and cute! I guess he is going places! lol!
Date: 2/10/2004 9:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    I agree - Number 8 has my vote! Now, if I could just get through! lol! I wish they would do something with the accoustics. It makes them sound flat. Oprah had a similiar type show on Monday for the non-traditional performer and their sound system was fabulous! Maybe Idol needs to take some lessons... {hits redial...)
Date: 2/10/2004 9:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    I did see the infamous She Bangs guy! He is as sweet as a pure white magnolia flower. He just seems so naive and innocent, I hope Hollywood doesn't corrupt him! I was taken aback by Simon smoking...and then tonight he was playing with a lighter. He doesn't seem to care about his image though. I truly busted out in laughter when he saw the girl he was telling the audience about and ryan covered his face and Simon said, This is FANTASTIC!" It was a perfect Candid TV moment. Unfortunately I missed Oprah's talent show...I didn't know it was coming on :( Thanks for posting Paula
Date: 2/10/2004 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    Yes, that was interesting how the camera was fixated on Simon with the cigarette hanging out of his mouth while finishing dressing in the car! lol! He has such a beautiful girlfriend! And the things he doesn't do with her, like romantic stuff - I thought, "Girl - there are PLENTY of fish in the sea that I'm SURE would love to treat you right!" And then to embarass Ryan's girlfriend by trying to get Ryan to ask her to live with him on air!!! What's with that?! If I was his (Simon's) girfriend I would have just crawled into a corner. Crude...
Date: 2/10/2004 10:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    Oprah's Pop Star will be on again next Monday with the winners. It is good!
Date: 2/10/2004 10:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    Yea, Simon's a real class act...make that crass act, LOL Thanks for the head's up on Oprah, I'll be sure to tune in :)
Date: 2/11/2004 4:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 6867    My top 3 picks...Fantasia, Jennifer, and Diana. Love Yourself,
Date: 2/11/2004 6:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Darn it, I forgot to vote. I'd tried getting through, kept getting busy signals and than forgot about it until now. I would have voted for Katie. There was just something I didn't like about Fantasia's voice, I can't put my finger on it. They called her unique and I would agree, but unique isn't always a good thing is it? I know she gave a great performance and all..but still I think I would change the station if a song of hers came on.
