Connection
After the mess was cleaned up, Corina sat down at her dining table with a steaming cup of hot chocolate. She stared at the vivid bouquet in a mix of wonder and sinking fear. She wondered quietly about the fact that no one knew where she was, not even her sister, Leslie, knew what state or town she moved to. Maybe it was a neighbor, one of those do-gooders who believe they are earning their way to heaven one good deed at a time. Yes, she decided, that's got to be it!
After a few more sips out of her favorite mug featuring a picture of Betty Boop in Harley wear, Corina began unpacking boxes one at a time. The movers were gracious enough to place all of her furniture where she wanted, so she was able to fill drawers and shelves with ease. When she came to the box marked books and albumns, she set it aside. She wasn't able to face the contents within the Jack Daniel's box just yet.
Instead, she decided to take a quick walk around the backyard. When she found the place, she was more interested in the realtor's take on the history of the homestead than taking a good look at all of the immenities the backyard had to offer. SHe stepped outside the sliding patio doors into a gorgeously blooming rose garden.
Beyond the gigantic red and pink blooms, she saw a hammock hanging between two monsterous red oaks. Her heart swelled as she walked toward the hammock to give it a try. The last time she'd been in a hammock was years before the nightmares began. Lying down, Corina felt automatically relaxed and decided to take a little break. She soon fell into a deep sleep and began to dream.
In her dream she saw Roger. He was coming towards her, but the dream ended abruptly as Corina fell right out of the hammock. Even in her dreams Roger's memory haunted Corina. She rose from the soft ground and brushed herself off before conitinuing down the hill to the edge of her property and what she was told was a natural spring-fed creek.
Beyond the brush, Corina saw the sun's reflection dancing on top of the little spring and she sped up a bit, almost skipping down the hill. 'I wish I could share this moment with Nicolette,' Corina thought as a single tear slid down her face onto her own reflection in the creek below.
It had been almost two years since Nicole died in the NICU, but Corina might as well have died that day as well, because life lost all meaning after she lost her little Buttercup. The pain in Corina's heart was so unbearable that she laid down beside the creek and let her tears mix with the natural spring and flow down the beautiful hillsides.
