eeehh kinda but not really, most places celebrate it like the Americans only modify it to their traditions lol... I know we have like 4th of July but thats not a super huge event or anything or 'culturally defining' in my opinion... |

I believe that's why it's called the melting pot. If you want to look at american culture, you'd have to look at all of them. |

yeah true but thats why Im saying your average white american with a lot of the past generations being american, because for a lot of us its like theres nothing cultural about it lol! A lot of people either forget their roots or don't even remember what they were to begin with or there were just to many mixings to follow a certain culture. |

We are a melting pot of cultures. I think though if you look at the mainstream of some American things like food (barb-q, pork chops and potato salad or cole slaw) or music (rock, jazz and pop) you might see a seperate element classified as a cultural thing. When I was in school we learned about a culture as a group of individuals who (may) share similiar likes and dislikes, values, norms, language and in some case food or traditions. Americans are a diverse culture; one of the most diverse around. |

I overheard a dental student say today that "Americans" nowdays have teeth that are forming different due to the intermarriage of races/cultures. Use to be easy to fit false treeth for a caucasian. But, now when you have caucasians and blacks marrying and having children, their mouths are not the same as their predecessors. Interesting. Never thought of it like that before. |

our own personal family traditions that come down from generation to generation is part of what distinguishes our culture. Americans have Thanksgiving and football and Independence Day, and our individual families translate these national celebrations in different ways. When you mentioned white people, it's kinda funny, because we are all so mixed, and yet different traits from different branches of our individual family trees have also passed down certain traditions and celebrations brought on by their ancestor's culture. We also create a more complex culture by infusing other cultures' traditions. Americans are known as lazy and stupid and arrogant by the rest of the world, and if you looked at our country as if through the fishbowl television set, you'd probably agree :p |

Yes, we do have traditions and culture. Marriage, funerals, and holidays are traditions. And some of our culture includes McDonald's, Britney Spears, ect. |

SpaceCase I agree on most of that. Well 'white people' lol in my case means someone in this country who has a lot of European mix ancestry usually. Like in my case I got a bunch of french, swedish, german, italian, english, so forth in me and its so far back that theres just really no traditions anymore lol maybe were just to lazy to mix em. CreepyFreak we may have those things but we really dont do anything special (less we be from some minority) for weddings usually, just the same basic stuff that was brought from England. |

That's interesting.. I never thought of that. Maybe American culture would be American things shared by the majority of cultured groups. LOL Really, I don't think American has a particular culture. |

We need more posts like this...
I think we do have a culture, but it could use a lot of work. Our culture is mostly based on production and economic gain. Too little of our time goes toward the human side of our country. This is why we have so many problems, like suicide and stuff. People here are very independed, and keep to themselves. They seem to have a particular group of friends, and either think them superior or inferior to every one else, so people are not as social. You can really notice it if u come here from europe. Over there, it's like a group thing, u have a bunch of friends, but more like family, u can walk out in the street and not worry about kidnappings, rape and such. Every one is friendly, and people do more things to make people confortable. There are people on the streets, outdoor markets, every thing. People here who r on the streets are either homeless or on crack. Things are more human, right down to the way they talk, they are very particular about how they speak, making each word meaningful. French (france) is a great example. People try to speak there best, so people can understand, it's more colorful. They spend more time the way they dress and pay more attention to how they look and sound in the world. Where as by comparison American speech is a little more geared towards getting the message accross as fast as possible, and as direct as possible. Unfortunately the human element is lost. People are not machines, and should act or be treated as such. In Germany (a great place) people are quite friendly, hardly any body watches t.v. over there, as compared to here. They are very social, and if u cannot get a hold of ur friends u just go out ne wayz, cuz every one over there is ur friend. Infact u don't even call them. No need to call ur friends, u just go down to a social place, whereever u want,
(every where really is a social place) and u will have fun. Here people r so independent, that they feel uncomforatable around other people. And when u r with strangers here u always wonder if they want to take advantage of u, rob u somthing, too many elements of humanity have been shaved off over here...
It is very sad...
And by the say it's not soo much that white people don't have a very pronounced culture, it's the fact that North america, just does not have an animated culture. Places throughout europe are filled with culture. And they r predominently white... |

Night Ryder I never thought of it that way and you are SO right (well I'll take your word on europe judging by what I know lol...) Prairie Dawn your kinda right because we do have those things (though some of them break off into certain ethnicities or parts of the country) but thats more just our pop culture not really a full out culture (no holidays, no special traditions of our own, so forth...) Well I'm glad to see a lot of people feelin the same way, I've been wondering this awhile LOL! |

In a way, you are right. We kind of extract everything from other cultures. But it depends on the family. |
