OK, I need help on my taxes! Me and my hunny have been together for 4 years. We arent legally married, but we represent ourselves as husband and wife. We have never filed our taxes together before and I didnt work this year, so Im confused. Since we arent legally married are we not allowed to file jointly? Or should he just claim me as a dependant?
I filled out 1040 form both ways, and if we filed married, we'd get more money back, which will go towards a down payment on a house. but I dont want to get in trouble if it illegal to file married even though your really not married.
