I Think I'll Lose my Job Today........Souldrifter...Update

  Author:  30747  Category:(Discussion) Created:(3/8/2004 3:17:00 AM)

I'm about as stressed out as a person gets. I've been working for this company for two years now as the financial manager, which means I've had the responsibility for paying the bills, collecting what is owed, ect. It's a small electrical contracting business owned by a father and a son. The past two years have been a struggle. Not that this company didn't make any money. We actually made a LOT of $$$$$. BUT the bosses SPENT a lot of money and therefore it has been very difficult to keep things going. Most weeks I had to pull off a miricle just to pay payroll.

I've held many, many meetings with my bosses, explaining the finances, practically begging them to back off the bank account so that I could get things paid and on time. They would listen and things improved for about a day. Then they would be right back into it, writing checks or telling me to pay this or that personal bill for them. I even gave the son a substantial raise so that I wouldn't have to pay his mortgage anymore. In the past two years I have had to pay BOTH of there insanely high mortgages plus thousands and thousands of dollars in other personal expenses that I just can't understand how these people can live so much beyond there means. I mean, they both get decent pay checks...so why? The father bosses wife quit her job over a year ago and the boss has been having me give her at least $1,000 a month to compensate for their home bills...other than the mortgage AND I've had to pay her monthly car loan ($600) AND her car insurance. Heck, I've even had to register her car for her. I even had to pay for there younger sons graduation party last year and I've been paying his college tuition since last September.

Last December I told them both that the first couple of months of this year were going to be very tight financially. I saw what was coming in and I knew what had to go out. Frankly I was worried already because I knew the taxes were behind. I had even opened up another account in another bank just to store the tax money but young boss hit that up before I got a chance to pay them. They are aware of this but don't seem to care because they think I can preform miricles. Well, I'm out of miricles now. Anyway, even after telling them things were tight, they have hit the account for personal reasons for thousands and thousands again. I even had to pay for the bosses wife's expensive eye glasses plus giving her a couple thousand for...I don't even know what. Young boss thought he was cool when he got stuck in a snow bank and distroyed his engine and transmission getting out. SO that cost about $3,000 that I didn't expect and couldn't afford.

But it gets better and better *sarcasm* Last week I had to scramble to pay our supplier because they were threatening to shut us off, which means the jobs we have going now would have to stop because we couldn't get materials. I struck a deal with the supplier and sent them a partial check to keep things going, knowing that when the rest is due I will still not have the money to pay it but...one day at a time...right? That left just enough for payroll. Sometime in the middle of last week I checked my check drawer and found that little boss had taken a check and written if for $950, supposidly to pay his mortgage, which I know is only $700 but I didn't make THAT an issue. The fact is that I didn't know about it and because of that, I no longer had all the money I needed to make payroll. So I spent Thursday begging for money from people who owed us and managed to collect a small amount....just enough to make payroll MINUS little bosses pay. He didn't get squat. Friday I got the bank statement and did a reconsiliation and that is when I found that little boss had hand written two more checks that I didn't know about this past month to the tune of $1,500. One of the checks I did know about but he told me it was only for $100. Turns out it was for $500. This completely threw off my books. Now, I'm seriously overdrawn. Checks I have written are going to be returned and it's very possible that the huge check I wrote to the supplier will be one of them.

I was so angry I couldn't even comfront him personally. I'm the only one who works in the office so I was alone anyway but I could have called him or his father to spout off. I didn't. Instead I wrote little Johnny a letter and taped it to my door, knowing he would be coming in after I left to pick up his pay check...suprice to him that he wasn't getting one. It was the first time since I've worked there that I let my anger be known. I told him that if I didn't need to feed my family with my pay check that I would of walked out right then and there. And I mean that too.

I'm not sure what my day will be like today. I'm not sure if I'll get fired...althouge I doubt it but it would be nice, or maybe I'll impulsively quit because I can't take this stress anymore. They only have an inkling of an idea of how much trouble this company is in. I found out last Friday that the IRS is levying the account in 10 days for payment. I let them have a peaceful weekend before I tell them today. I also need to come up with $1,300 by Wednesday to pay the company insureance or we will have to shut down. There's no way I can do that. I'm seriously overdrawn as it is and nothing is coming in. There will be no payroll for me or anyone else this week. No more miricles. I'm not a quitter. If I were, I would have done it a long time ago. But this stress is taking a toll on my health and my family life. I'm just not happy anymore. *sigh*

I guess I just needed to vent. Just needed a shoulder to cry on. But if you have any suggestions on what to do I would gladly like to know. Keep in mind I need to work to pay my own bills. *smiles* Thanks.

Update...I barely made it througe the day. Little boss came in this morning very angry and aggitated. I don't know if it was directed at me or his father. They both have a way of blaming each other for the financial troubles we have when in actuality it is BOTH of their faults. I asked little boss if he were mad at the note I left him Friday. He said he didn't blame me but his attitude was hard to read. He requested all of the financial data for "personal" reasons. I'm thinking he's thinking bankruptsy althouge I don't know why he would keep that a secret from me. Big boss was no were to be found today. I spent the day printing out financial data for little boss and taking calls from creditors and apologizing for returned checks that are starting to come in already. I also found out there is a lock on the company account, probably due to the tax levy. I called the lady at the bank that we deal with to get some answers but she was busy and didn't return my call. This means even more checks than I thought will bounce...so to speak. The good news of the day is that the tax levy for Federal taxes is being held off for a month. Not that it will make a big difference in the long run but it does buy some time. This company is definitely going under. I can't help feeling some what responsible. But I keep telling myself the odds were against success before I even started working there. I forgot to mention that this is big bosses 3rd company. The first 2 went bankrupt for the same reasons. These guys will never, ever learn.

Thanks for your responses and I've taken your suggestions to heart. I am quitting ASAP and only after I am sure my butt is covered. Love ya's.

Date: 3/8/2004 3:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 25390    oh hon, I wish I had some ideas. But it sounds like maybe they will need a hard lesson in being shut down to realize that they can't do that. I bet if you quit then they would shut down tomorrow with the way it sounds like they are spending. I hope today goes okay for you. I will say a little prayer that everything works out. *big hugs*
Date: 3/8/2004 3:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    Geez sounds like these two are idiots..sorry Sis, but they are bumbling idiots with NO sense of business at all..I would cut my losses NOW and walk away before it starts to get any worse.
Date: 3/8/2004 3:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 53360    If it was me, I would be looking for another job, so that I could quit! these people sound like they have no idea how to run a business. Its like they are depending on you to do that for them.
The little boss needs to keep his sticky fingers out of the drawer! I dont think they will be in business much longer, so Id start looking for a job if things dont change around there. Im sorry they are putting all of this strees on you.

Date: 3/8/2004 4:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Dang! Hon, protect your own self with documentation (copies of their signatures on their self wrote checks) and leave them! When the IRS comes calling, I'm afraid you might get the blame from your bosses. I can't imagine people spending that much money and still not being satisfied. No wonder you are stressed, I wish I knew what else to say.
Date: 3/8/2004 4:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 62136    Holy Smack! My head is spinning just reading this! I can only imagine what you are going through. Looks like a miracle, indeed, is needed for this company. ((((hugs)))) I dont really know what to say...wow

Date: 3/8/2004 6:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 1432    Wow that is a lot of stress ...
Date: 3/8/2004 6:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 943    Sounds to me like if you go back to work you will be working for free!!! What sense is that? Wait til the IRS gets their hands on them. My guess, they are days away from being completely DONE. I sure hope they don't try to blame you though.
Date: 3/8/2004 6:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 943    BTW, I would write myself a paycheck daily...or not even go!
Date: 3/8/2004 6:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 7672    How about opening an account on which only you have authority ?
Date: 3/8/2004 7:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 1065    I can just imagine how stressed you are. I hope that in the end, everything turns out for the best even if that means you getting fired and getting a better job. Good Luck, today at work.
Date: 3/8/2004 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 4883    You did not mention whether or not they are incorporated but as the CEO and stockholder in a corporation I can tell you that much of what you have said they have been doing will be viewed very dimly by the IRS and some of it most likely is illegal... The general rule of thumb is when a business falls into tax problems and or liens its sunk... Many times people will struggle to keep them afloat but the business seldom recovers...(and thats with someone trying at the helm) As Penny said cover yourself where neccessary with proper documentation but do not violate any electronic media or sensitive data agreements you may have with the company...The personal checks being cut from the company accounts will point straight to the abusers... Run don't walk to the nearest exit... I have seen and have had to deal with companies like this for years and I doubt 1 in a hundred mend their ways and start conducting their business properly...If your books are in order there is no way you can be found at fault according to what you have said here,, no matter what the owners claim, but whatever you do... Don't compensate yourself before the normal pay period and or more than you're owed... ~Jay~
Date: 3/8/2004 7:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 48250    So Sorry This is Happening to You...It Sounds Like You Are The Glue which has Held This Company Together... I Hope that every thing goes well for You today...Hopefully things will look Brighter..It would seem with Your Expertise In Finance,, You Could Certainly land Employment Elsewhere.. With all that has been happening with Your company and the fact it is now affecting Your Health and Home life... Sounds like you NEED to seek employment elsewhere.., Apparently These people have a very serious problem with their finances; their spending when they do not have money to spend..They need to learn One can Never Pay out OVER the Limit when they do not have An Over abundance of money coming in...
I think with Your Experience and Expertise,, You Could find employment WITHOUT The headaches, elsewhere..Best Wishes to You....God Bless.....T/C....

Date: 3/8/2004 7:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 48250    I Also want to say I Agree with The Rest here.., It would be in Your Best Interest to Protect Yourself in The Event Your bosses, Attempt to Place Blame on You, in reference to the IRS And Other Debtors this company Owes this money....then., I would leave The Company....Best Wishes....
Date: 3/8/2004 10:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 26363    I know exactly how you are feeling, I was in the same position. I sprouted grey hairs with the stress of it all. When I first started there I found huge discrepancies in the accounts which I finally traced to the lady whom I replaced. She was actually writing her own paycheck in erasable ink and changing it after the boss signed it! I couldn't believe he never noticed but after working there for about a year I also wisened up to his shanannigans. Turns out he was up to his neck in cocaine. I left. What a looser! He was putting his habit before even signing for some of the employees payslips! And these were honest people with families. Several people left him after that and he eventually closed shop. Try lookin for another job on your lunch break, no job is worth you health.
Date: 3/8/2004 11:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    wow. I think I'd be hunting for another job....even if they don't fire ya....they do not deserve to have you. and you really shouldn't get mixed up with this business any further...
Date: 3/8/2004 1:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    You have done everything you can to keep this company going. Its too bad the owners did not have the same sense of responsibility. Get out of there. Get copies of the documents you need to protect yourself. Maybe, you should consult a lawyer about this. With your skills and responsibility, I think you will find another job quickly. You have my sympathies for this terrible situation. Best of luck.
