Harry Potter..... Too strong for children?

A cousin of mine is not allowing her 5 year old to indulge in The Harry Potter series because of it's reference to magic. In my opinion, the series was not written in lei of teaching children about magic or that it is good to perform Dark magic, but that it is more of a general right and wrong issue, pertaining to bullying i.e. Draco Malfoy and the aspect of team playing (quidditch). I have never been a fan of reading but once I finished the first book I wanted to find out what Harry was going to do next, I mean it really inspired me to read, after I put down Potter I picked up Lord of The Rings. The movie also directs the aspect of magical tricks to a more kiddy level (magical candies), and Harry's personality all together, I feel this movie is not trying to teach Witchcraft but common decency, as our main character Harry is hard to hate, I mean he is all around a great guy, which promotes fans to be the same.

Date: 3/21/2004 3:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 22992    My god, its not communist manifesto people! (nothing against communism) but the book isnt meant to persuade people to use magic.. its a book, god!
Date: 3/21/2004 3:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    It is a made up story pure and simple. if they actually sat down and read the books or watch the movies they would understand Harry Potter is all about fighting the dark side, not working with it. But people are just too closed minded.
Date: 3/21/2004 3:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 27403    I have wondered if all of these parents and people that are so against the "Harry Potter" books are also denying their children all of the old beautiful fairy tales; i.e. Cinderella, SnowWhite, Grimms Faery Tales and on and on. These beautiful stories are full of magic. That is why children have loved them for centuries. I see a "Dark Ages" looming in our future, if some people don't get some sense around this world> Love and Light
Date: 3/21/2004 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    Not all magick is Dark Magick!!!! Magick isn't evil unless the person doing the magick makes it evil!!! REMEMBER THAT!!!!!

Date: 3/21/2004 4:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 19220    I think Harry Potter is a wonderful fictional book. I don't think there's anything wrong with letting a child read it.
Date: 3/21/2004 5:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    seriously i dont get people who have issues with this series ... its fantasy!! it entertains kids and helps them to use there imagination and enjoy reading. when i was a kid i used to read stuff from the Enid Blyton collection, anyone familiar? about faires and goblins and a magic faraway tree ... i loved them and they encouraged me to read. i know for a fact the harry potter series would do the same for me if i were a kid
Date: 3/21/2004 6:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 51684    No, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Harry Potter series. I've read every book and I've seen every movie. lol I'm a Christian, and I can't honestly see how anyone (Christians included) could possibly label this book as evil. I thought the hype had died down, but I guess since the new movie is coming out in June, we'll have to face it again.
Date: 3/21/2004 9:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    I think its good for children. It turns them on to reading and its only fantasy.
Date: 3/21/2004 10:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    i can't wait for the new book! besides, i need some new spells lol. my kid gets to read it, i don't have a problem with it.
Date: 3/22/2004 8:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 13729    I think HP books are great for everyone......I think they are great for kids and adults too.....I've read all of them and I'm 38!....
Date: 3/22/2004 2:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 39370    I think that the people that are against it are looking WAY too deep into it. I mean, honestly...most normaly kids after reading Harry Potter, are not going to go running to the nearest bookstore to buy a book on Wicca and witchcraft/magick, etc. It is a fictional story where the bottom line is choosing good over bad.
Date: 4/20/2004 7:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    I don't see anything at all wrong with the Harry Potter books and like the rest of you I think it is wonderful entertainment for them and helps them to seperate fantasy from reality. I guess I don't understand why some parents refuse to let their children read these books ... but will let the minister teach these innocent children about "Eternal Damnation"! If this monstrous lie doesn't traumatize them, then I don't know what will!
