CHECK YOUR CREDIT! Don't be a victim like me!!!!!!

I received a letter in the mail saying I owed a bank 4,355.66,but the collection agency offered me a most "generous settlement" of 1033.23. I called them to find out what this was about, and it turned out somebody had applied for(and received) a credit card in My name. Not only that, it had been ten yrs previous!!!! I didn't know much about credit, but now I realize I paid more in interest than I should have!! Get a credit report so you can see where you stand. I thought I had good credit, turns out I probably looked like a deadbeat!!!!

Date: 3/21/2004 9:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    Thats awful. Thanks for the warning and I'm sorry you had to deal with this. Yeah like Moon Girl said, I'm wondering if you can have this fixed somehow??
Date: 3/21/2004 10:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    We are dealing with that too. We found out a few years ago that someone was using my husbands name but havent been able to do anything about it. The last thing he had put on our credit report (bad of course) was 2 months ago. Things are getting worse, because now he is using not only hubbys name but also using 3 other names (a different spelling of the last name) all with one social security number. We have 2 civil litigations against us because of him, over $20,000 in negatives on hubbys credit, and we have the IRS saying that WE owe them money for tax returns that they paid to him. Its only getting worse and without getting a lawyer there isnt anything we can do. Im sorry this happened to you and I hope you can get it taken care of so it wont ruin you. Good Luck!
Date: 3/22/2004 3:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 54570    Been there done that. Cept that it was hospital bills. $80,000 total that my insurance was supposed to have paid for. But the insurance company "politely laughed" and said that it wasnt thier fault that the judgements were filed because the bills were not submitted to them in the proper billing format. It took a lawyer to straighten that up but now I still have them on record but they show as paid. And also if you already have a judgement on you like the one you said do not pay anything on it. The moment you accept thier "generous offer" they can refile the judgment against you for another seven to ten years. That happened to a friend of mine as well. He had two from a hospital and was only two years away from them falling off when they contacted him. Seems he didnt know about them and his insurance at the job where he was injured never paid them. Well to be a nice guy he sent them some money. Then he found out about the insurance not paying for it and all and that they also had refiled the judgement now that he had paid in a few dollars on the case. And it was all legal. Look to see when your judgement expires. Dont accept anything they offer you as well. If they can get you to verbally agree over the phone or even to send a dollar to them they can legally refile the entire judgement but with a different monetary value. (fees minus or plus) And for another seven years. Its a rat race.
Date: 3/22/2004 6:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I'm always worried about that. Make sure you always rip up credit card offers before you throw them away. I saw a report on the news a month ago that this is happening to children! One kid who is 12 had to get a completly different social security number because someone had been using his since his birth and he "owed" something like 50,000.00.
Date: 3/22/2004 11:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    this is identity theft it's becoming more an dmore of a problem i suggest everyone reading this, BUY A PAPER SHREDDER! shred anything and everything with numbers and accounts on it, shred everything from bills to bank statements, also when you are disposing of an expired card distroy it.. sand off(cut up) the numbers so you cannot peice it together this is the only way to completely protect yourself
