i guess i understand why you would say something like that, but when someone close to me dies, the last thing i think about is how meaningless their life really is. you can't tell me that you have no one that you care deeply about enough to miss them when they are gone and wish they were still in existence. that's just not humanly possible. if you ask any scientist what the four basic neccessities of humans are sure they will tell you food, clothing, and shelter, but there is also one that many peopl forget and that is love. scientists have proven that people will not survive without at least some form of human contact and love, in isolation, human life is nonexistent. so that means that we were put on this earth to do more than just breathe and populate the earth. but that's just my opinion, i'm sure the next time someone close to you dies, you'll handle it differently knowing that they were just another "insect"; just another among the masses. |

Well, you're definately intitled to your opinion... but that seems to be such a sad way to look at life... I mean if you have no purpose than how do you choose to live your life? |

hmmm.... you're right.. I suppose I should have just let myself die both times I tried to commit suicide since there really is no reason to live. |

In my opinion, there really aint any reason to live. Not that I advocate suicide , but people should not bet so worked up over death and birth and all this trivial stuff, because in the end and in the grand scheme of things, they are all meaningless. |

I don't buy it. I think you know better than this. There are varying statements in your philosophy that just don't support you're theory. Just because we all die doesn't make our lives meaningless, in fact it is the act of death and the fact that we cannot escape it that gives so much meaning to our lives. The fact that we are intelligent, but not intelligent enough to live forever only excites us to do and achieve more in the short time span that we are human. Freaks of nature is a good description of what we are, sentient beings with the ability to be sentimental is what we are. In fact, this writing in itself is quite sentimental. That we are maggots just doesn't make any sense, and the fact that we are one of billion is an amazing thing. Anyways, for a person that reads Nietzche, writes poetry, is interested in psychology and philosophy among other things, I just don't buy it. |

I am serious. You just don't undersstand my reasoning. Philosophy and poetry and all that stuff, what does that have to do with my post here? The meaning of life has always been debated, and my view is that we are all maggots. Look deeper in my views before refuting them. |

Trust me, I understand what you are saying. If you truly believe this, then quit your job. Never watch TV again, throw away your computer. Rid yourself of everything. You do have reasons to live, you do have meaning in your life, otherwise you wouldn't be here interested in what other people have to say. If there was no meaning in life, no reason to live, we would ALL be emotionless, careless. We wouldn't be interested in people as lovers, or friends. Sex would be pointless. If there is no reason and no meaning, then nothing IN this life would have reason or meaning as well. Look deeper into what I'm saying. Do you understand? |

I don't think you understand, I was referring to you when I stated "for a person that reads Nietzche, writes poetry, is interested in psychology and philosophy among other things, I don't buy it."; Not me, I don't need to brag about myself to make a point. All I was saying is that in your other posts you've stated much more meaningful things that don't point to guy that thinks the world is full of maggots. Or maybe you did, but you didn't put it so gloriously. |

Like you, I don't believe that life itself has a driving purpose. I believe that everything in existance - alive, dead, sentient, or inanimate - is, for lack of a better term, an accident. Maybe the beginning of life was as simple as a few specs of stardust falling to Earth billions of years ago. But, so what? Does that really matter? I mean, the Sun still shines, the Moon still glows, and you're still here.. "Why" only matters as long you want it to. I was born and I will die, but the only impact that my death truly has on my life will not be felt until the very moment that it ends. So, for now, I'm going to continue enjoying ice cream, cheering for the Leafs, and studying my world, simply because I want to. |

For sure, if you look at life at anything other than being human, you may well find no more relevance to "being" than a roach or any other insect. However if you understand that meaning comes from "meaning", which only humans can thus far write about, ascribe to, an articulate, find a way to make what "makes life meaningful known", then and only then are we able to know or understand what makes us different. I don't think so, don't believe it is possible for man to have so much feeling and live and die for so much "meaning" and be nothing but a maggot. What we leave behind is what brings some meaning to the the world. It is simple and as complex as that, or we would have killed one another long before now. |

Well, that's a sadistic and rather pathetic outlook on life. I suppose our 'selves' are the result of chemical reactions and neural stimulus from our environments, too? Hm, well, I beg to differ. We do have meaning, we do have a purpose. The individual is completely irrelevant. We are apart of nature, of the universe, and of whatever that is apart of. We belong to a network that supports other networks, and we are supported by other networks. And to say that we are a mere coincidence is a bit far fetched. The creation of the universe, our solar system and our planet is as likely to occur if you took apart a watch, threw all the parts into a paper bag, shake it and have the watch back in a uniform, working condition. All parts intact. Perhaps you need to cheer up a little bit. |

To be honest, none of us are special. We are all humans and function the same way but we do have different levels of talents and abilities, etc...but I'm not sure that qualifies as special. It justifies the thought of everyone being equal and that's something I believe. And here's another thing to think about, do we even have souls or do our 'selves' even exist? Who are we? etc... It's a quite a hard thought to comprehend, I am still trying to comprehend it myself. Anyway, I didn't read all the replies but I'm sure people referred to your post as 'pessimistic' or 'pathetic.' I don't believe it is, it is the truth and we could all use a little help with recognizing the truth. Thank you for posting this, USM is a little one sided and you helped to even it out. |
