You WANT them? Have you gone and lost your mind? LOL! To me they were a pain. My teeth constantly hurt, especially after they changed the wires. It was difficult for me to eat anything hard. I was so happy to get them off. Good luck with them! |

Oh, and about gum, it can get stuck in your brackets and build up plaque which will cause stains on your teeth. Happened to me, but thankfully it was one in the back and I got it bleached, but it was expensive. |

I had braces put on in the 8th grade. The first day i came home and bit into a slice of cucumber and one of the brackets popped off. but for the most part you can still eat whatever you want. the main things you will have trouble with is corn on the cob, and apples that are not cut up, things like that. let me tell you after two years with braces i was very excited to bite into a candy apple when i got them off. ~Charmed One~ |

Brush your teeth more often then you already do, stains build up quickly... I don't know how old you are, but smoking will cause more stains then it's worth... white bread will now be you enimy, it will get stuck inbetween the brackets and wires and be a general pain in the butt... think soft, you won't be bitting in to an apple until you get them off, but you can slice one to eat it... floss is your new best friend and it will be way more difficult to use, but you can get threaders... GET A WATER PICK, and use it, often... it will be the easiest way to really clean all the new nooks and crannies... good luck ... |

My daughter wore braces for four years. It started out ok for her, but the second year she got pretty bored with them and found out that a cut up mouth, sore gums and a cut tongue that would swell up if she bit it was not worth having braces... but she toughed it out by using wax, rubber bands and *slaps forehead* the countless bottles of ambesol numbing gel, Lol, and in the third year, she saw the difference it made in how she liked her smile forming really nice, the way she wanted it to look. About six months before the braces were to come off, she found out that since her teeth grew and shifted and others were coming in, the dentist had to inform her she needed to wear them for one more year, making it five years now. Oh to be the mother of such a teenage issue, Lol.. soooo, she strung it out another year and when they finally came off.. she has the most prettiest teeth, all straight and even and white! Yeah, it takes a lot to adjust to, like eating, using straws and dental floss and stuff like that, but it is worth the challenge when you can look at yourself in the mirror and really like who you see looking back :D:D Sorry this was so long, Lol... |

I just read some of the comments, Lol.. yeah, you have to take the peeling off apples and pears and other skinned fruit, bread will not be a part of your meal for a while *giggles* I remember my daughter's experience with that *totally laughing out loud over here* the toothbrush did become her best friend *grins* with or without tooth paste on it :D Remember, it is all for a good cause! |

I had braces for four years, (I had a one year break in between to wear a retainer.) It hurt when they were first put on, but it got better. When I had braces, I still ate corn and gum, and the rest of the foods you are not suppossed to eat. (Nothing happened!) But I'm not saying you should. Also, wax never helped me with the pain of my braces. Good luck! You will have a beautiful smile when they come off! |
