Korick walked out of the old shop, surprised that what they told him had worked so well. The shop keeper had been skeptic when he said that Quaron and Jalok had said him, but his expression changed the instant he said those words. Korick still wasn't sure what it meant, but it worked, and that's what mattered to him.
He tightened his grip around the staff, stopping to look at it for a moment. He had heard before that the Faye did wonderful work with their magical staffs. Priests always wanted to go to the town of the Faye just to get a closer look at some of their work, but he hadn't heard of anyone actually trying it and coming back with the real stuff.
The wood of the staff had Elven carvings in it, something else that Korick didn't completely understand. He let his hand glide across the smooth wood, feeling the power that was in the staff. Whatever was written on there really held a lot of meaning.
He looked at the the crystals and jewels that had been put in at the top. Elven jewels, some of the most powerful there were. He stared at it for a moment, his mind not willing to believe what his eyes were seeing. It was a much better staff than he had been carrying around before.
He put the end of the staff on the ground and looked around, noticing that people were staring at him.
"So this is probably how she felt in my village," he said quietly to himself, not at all amused.
He watched the doors to the town close behind him, wondering if he was going to manage to get back in. He frowned, suddenly realizing that he didn't know how to tell which Shadow would have an antidote. He let out a quick sigh, not sure what to do anymore. The barren lands were quiet and clean, no sign of Shadows anywhere.
He started walking, waiting until he got as few yards away before he began to chant. He hit the staff down on the ground, sending our a surge of energy to get the attention of the Shadows. He wondered how many would come, but it didn't matter because one of them would have to have an antidote.
He looked at the horizon as shrieks went through the air. He lifted his head up, letting the wind blow his blood red hair into his eyes. He tightened his grip on the staff, concentrating on his own body and mind. A light glow went around him, a way to protect himself. He had healed Quaron before he left, so his power was getting weaker, but he knew he still had some fight left in him.
He watched as three Shadows came up from under the ground. They all hissed and shrieked at him, obviously mad that he disturbed them. He turned the staff quickly, making it paralel to the horizon. He held it up and looked at the Shadows with a look of defiance.
"I'm here for an antidote," he said, more to himself than to the Shadows. "And I'm not leaving until I get it."
A creepy laughter filled the air. He could see the Shadows' faces were contorted in laughter, probably thinking he was out of his mind. One of the Shadows came closer to him and he spun the staff in his hands, a great wave of light flowing out from it. The Shadow let out a screech and backed away, realizing that it was a blessing light.
Korick smiled slightly. "So blessing hurts you, huh?"
The Shadows circled him, trying to find a time when his guard was down. He kept the staff up, ready to begin a blessing spell when they got close enough. He stopped moving when he saw a little girl, in her lower teens, standing behind one of the Shadows. She giggled and sped by, jumping up to eat one as she went. The Shadows didn't even notice the disturbance.
She walked far enough away and pulled out a small vile, shaking it in front of her for Korick to see. He spun the staff suddenly, sending out another wave of blessing magic. The Shadows shrieked and backed away, giving him enough time to cut in between two of them and run to the girl.
"You can't possibly take on three of them!" The girl called out as he ran up.
"You little theif!" Korick said as he got closer. "Come on. Run as fast as you can toward those doors. Pound hard on them, and I'll meet up with you."
She put the vile in her vest pocket and started to run toward to town of the Faye. Korick turned around to see that the Shadows had recovered and were coming back after him. He hit the staff on the ground, letting it sink down into the dirt and closed his eyes. A light glow went around him as he began to pray, asking the great spirits to bless the Shadows.
The Shadows began hissing, pulling back as shimmers of light went over them. Korick grabbed the staff and start to walk slowly backward, still praying. The Shadows got farther away, not wanting to move while they were being hurt. He gave one last prayer, asking the spirits to bless them as much as they could and took off running.
The doors were opening as he got to the wall. He could hear the Shadows behind him, shrieking as they recovered and realized that he was fleeing. He turned as soon as he got through the door and watched the Shadows chase after him as the doors closed. A deep silence went over the town as Korick and small girl sat looking at the now locked door.
He turned and looked down at her. "How much did you manage to steal?"
She pulled out the vile and handed it to him. "I managed to catch a few other things, but this is what you had said you were going for."
"What's your name?" Korick kneeled down next to her to see her, suddenly realizing how short she was.
"My name is Sila!" She smiled. "I'm from the Druids. I came searching around for some stuff. I'm good at stealing, and wanted to get some of the things back they stole. I saw you in your predicament, and decided to help out."
"I'm Korick," he shook her hand. "I'm a priest, which is probably obvious. One of the Faye here is sick from poison."
"Someone important to you?" Sila looked at him.
"Yeah," Korick nodded. "Come on, lets go get this to her. Then she can thank you herself."
