The Devil's Beatin his Wife!

I am sitting here in front of my computer gazing out my window when I realize its raining (nothing new there!)but it's also sunny! Now I know this is no strange occurence having lived several years in sunny Florida but it did evoke an old memory. I can remember when I was young and staying with my granny in Florida (as I often did in the summer) that when this happened my granny would always say 'the devil's beatin his wife!' Well it has just occured to me what a strange saying? Has anyone else heard this one? If not what are some of the ones you have heard in your area? I wonder how this saying came about. I have also heard it in NC during my youth. MorningGlory

I too, am curious what that would mean also.. it could mean that it was raining so hard that the devil beating his wife meant she was crying really bad... that kind of in itself soounds really violent, Lol..
Date: 4/4/2004 8:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 62338    yes but which one is the devil and which one is the wife...Rawhide
Date: 4/4/2004 8:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 62511    I heard that saying like that before. Except I was told that it was God beating his wife, which is silly. And they would say it when it was thundering with no rain too. Lol.
Date: 4/4/2004 9:27:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 26363    Well I've been lookin round the net and can't find any origins for it but have discovered the same exact saying is used by the Dutch. Also there are other sayings that mean the same thing such as 'a foxes wedding' or 'an old maid's wedding'. There are more (but I can't remember them!) but they are all to do with weddings. Isn't that strange. Oh BTW...the whole saying seems to be the devil is beating his wife behind the kitchen door with a frying pan! LOL MG
Date: 4/4/2004 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 44321    My aunt in Georgia always told me when it rained and was sunny " the devil was beating his wife" she explained the sun was hell and the rain was the wifes tears :)
Date: 4/4/2004 11:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 48250    I've heard when it is Thundering God Is Re- Arranging His Furniture in Heaven...Or When There is Thunder And Lightening...That The Lightening is Talking To The Thunder And The Thunder Is Answering Back! *lol*...I've never heard of that one before...About the devil beating his wife...Have you ever noticed when Someone leaves this world...At times it will Rain...I Heard This Saying when I was a little Girl....That The Angels In Heaven Are Crying when it rains....T/C......
Date: 4/4/2004 11:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 32133    my brother used to tell me that thunder was god bowling.
Date: 4/4/2004 12:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 26363    Movin furniture and bowling! LOL ain't heard those yet. I like the one about angels cring in heaven. MG
Date: 4/4/2004 1:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    When it is thundering, I have heard people say, "Here comes the old man with the potato wagon!" lol.
Date: 4/4/2004 2:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 43807    Never heard it.

Date: 4/4/2004 2:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 49091    What? I've bever heard of this. I really dont understand it either...LOL I've heard when it rains and the sun if out that a rainbow will appear and that is to remind us that god made all man-kind a promise that he would never flood the earth again like he did in Noah's Ark.
Date: 4/4/2004 2:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 49091    I've always heard the rain was angels tears, thunder was angels bowling and nothing about lighting LOL
Date: 4/4/2004 2:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 54247    Wow! Thanks to all of you. Never heard of this Devil path! RAT
Date: 4/4/2004 3:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 28989    During a thunderstorm someone once told me that it was God bowling--but I couldn't see the point in God bowling, since he would always score 300.
Date: 4/4/2004 3:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    Yeah Medusa that's what I was able to find out about it :)
Date: 4/4/2004 9:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    we used to say that God was bowling when it thundered and when there was lightening, we'd say he made a strike...but I've never heard the devil spill...must not be deep enough in the south :)
Date: 12/25/2004 5:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I've never heard that before, but I have heard the bowling one, my mom says that all the time :)
