Daelian had never seen so many people take such an interest in a journey before. People hugged them tightly, wishing them luck as they went to leave. As they got closer to the door that led out, Daelian heard someone calling her name. The group stopped to see who it was, seeing a guy named Lokiel running down the road toward them.
Daelian crossed her arms, watching as his cloak flew up behind him. She looked at the two bags in his hand, narrowing her eyes in confusion. "What on earth are you doing, Lokiel?"
Lokiel slowed his pace as he got closer to them and smiled. "You think I'd let you go without me? I live to fight things!"
"You're insane," Daelian shook her head.
"That he is," Quaron nodded. "But hey, the more the merrier, right?"
Daelian nodded, letting Lokiel know that he could follow with them. They finished saying their goodbyes and soon began the journey to the next town. Sila had climbed up onto Quaron's shoulders after they got out the doors and decided she would just stay up there. Despite Quaron's complaining about how she was heavy, he seemed to enjoy carrying her around.
Korick kept looking around the land, making sure they weren't caught by surprise again. Daelian noticed that he was trying to stay as close to her as possible, as if trying to protect her from any harm that could come to them. She turned her head and smiled slightly, happy to know that someone cared about her well-being.
She stopped walking as a town came into view, her mood lifting a bit. "Is that it?"
"Yeah," Quaron nodded, looking at the wall that blocked it off. "The clan of Warriors. Some of the best fighters ever live there. That's the point of their clan. And they have many different kinds of fighters. They have masters in swords, spears, weapons, and even some masters in just hand to hand combat."
"Do you think any of them will join us?" Korick asked, throwing one of the bags over his shoulder.
"I know some of the people in there," Quaron nodded. "I'm sure there are a couple who are as crazy as we are. I hear them complaining all the time."
"Complaining doesn't mean they'll actually have any courage," Daelian frowned.
Quaron pounded on the door, giving a smile in Daelian's direction as if to tell her that everything would be okay. He turned as the hatch on the door opened to reveal two green eyes. "Hello there, Quaron returning from the land of the Faye. We ask admittance into your humble home so as to rest up and meet with some of my friends."
"No Shadows around?" The girl behind the door asked.
Korick looked behind them, holding up his staff a little bit. "None that we can see. If some come near, I can bless them and get them to back away while we get in."
The hatch closed and the door opened a little, just enough for all of them to step through. Daelian looked around the town as the doors closed, seeing how busy the place was. Shop keepers went to the streets to sell their products while people stood in the middle of the streets to talk and show off weapons. She looked at Quaron for a moment, not sure if this was normal.
He smiled and walked up to a woman on the street, her hair pulled back in a pony tail and a dagger in her belt. He turned to him, shaking her head. "Back already? What, did you want to lose to me again?"
"No, no," Quaron shook his head. "All of that can wait until later my sweet."
"Sweet?" Daelian stared at the girl.
"He likes to fantasize about things that would never happy in a million years," she replied. "My name is Seria, and these people are?"
"We can get to formal introductions in a moment," Quaron broke in before anyone could say a word. "But I wish to ask you a favor."
"A favor?" Seria tilted her head, smiling. "I think this is the first time you've asked for something instead of demanding it."
"Well, I would just tell you to do it, but I'm surrounded by people who will probably attack me as a group," Quaron pointed to the others behind him. "We're going after the Shadows to try and gain back the outside lands."
Daelian frowned and looked up at the wall, a feeling of dread falling over her. She held her breath, listening as the flapping of wings filled the air. Korick turned to look at the wall as everyone went silent, listening intently to the flapping wings.
Someone from the crowd screamed as a large Shadow in the shape of a bird flew in, opening its mouth to let out a loud screech. It swooped down, knocking into one of the large guard towers that sat at the corners of the walls. Korick grabbed Daelian's arms and pulled her out of the way of the falling debris.
Seria fell backward with the others as the debris hit the ground at their feet. Sila let out a scream as she fell hard onto the ground. Long, cruel laughter came from the Shadow as people went into panic all around the town, no longer sure of what to do.
