I've heard many good things about this surgery. There are dangers but many of them occur after surgery rather than during. Unfortunately, many patients don't follow the nutritional guidelines or try to overeat after the surgery. Good luck to you. |

I think that RedHairWitch, a USMer here, had that surgery a while back. You should ask her how the surgery went with her. I heard good and bad about the surgery, mostly good though. I haven't heard about anyone passing away because of the surgery. But I've heard that some people had trouble eatting certain foods, their ankles numbing, and a few other things that I forget. My fiance's friend's mom had this surgery done and she lost a lot of weight and she looks great! And she said that nothing bad has happened to her. |

This was on Oprah a few days ago. And I remember the statistics, the chances of not making it through were 1 in 200. Its a very personal decision, I guess you have to look at the quality of the life you are having now, and decide is this worth it. I'm sure there are bunches of websites dealing with this where you can learn more of the pros and cons. And there are several USM'ers that have had this surgery you could ask. Good luck! |

I think before undergoing this surgery I would try other alternatives, like Dr. Phil's plan. Write him. Maybe he can help you. Anytime you go under the knife there is a risk, especially if a person is overweight. I have battled with weigh issues all my life, but I would never have this surgery. Changing one's lifestyle is where it's all at. Good luck and please think twice or more about this. It is not a cure all. |

My friends Aunt died several days after the surgery, it is something to be taken very seriously, so do all the research you can and get a Doctor who has performed the surgery many times...ask to talk to the doctors other patients who have had the surgery. |

As with anything there are pros and cons. I would say that this is very personal and you need to make very certain that you are prepared to deal with the consequences for life. I have seen one lady loose tons of weight, and then I have heard of others who gain all of the weight they loose back. Look into the lifetime maintnence aspect of it and see what you think. Good Luck in your decision! |

I know a person who had the done about two years ago...but with them it was life or death ....he has lost over 200 pounds since the surgery....but I really think it's totally up to the person them self.....I've heard good and bad things about it...but if it was me I would only want to have it done if my life depended on it....there are other ways to loose weight, like eating less, drinking lots of water, walking, working out....I would talk to a few doctors before deciding ...know first hand the pros and cons..cause with any surgery there is risk during and after....I wish you luck on what you decide...... |

Good luck to you! If you are seriously overweight, I heard it works miracles for losing the pounds. I have heard bad stories, such as throwing up a lot if you eat too much or don't chew your food finely enough, and of getting infections if the doctor doesn't do his job right. However, being very overweight is unhealthy, and it is definitely worth a shot to try the surgery. Just check in with your doc a lot, and watch your health carefully. |

My mom had it and did good for about 15 years. Now, she can't absorb nutrients and she stomach is swollen like she's pregnant. Her doctor says it's a common side effect from the surgery, but it often takes years to show up. |

I work at a hotel and I checked in a women who had the surgery. She walked to my desk and put her head down on it like she was in pain. I tryed getting her help, but she refused. She later called me crying. She told me that she felt like she had gas trapped in her chest. From seeing her and hearing her in pain, I don't think you should do it...but you know how things work differently from person to person. What ever you decide, good luck with it. |
