Tomboy

It's an easy thing remembering
The first time that we met.
A cloudburst drenched the picnic
And you were there soaking wet.

Your hair tucked under a baseball cap.
But instantly I knew.
A girl was hiding behind that grin.
And a "tom boy" through and through.

I was just eleven at the time
And you were barely nine.
But your bruises and scrapes reassured me,
We'd get along just fine.

It wasn't long when we became
The really best of pals.
You ignored the other guys we met
And I ignored the gals.

I would thump your ears and pinch your cheeks.
I would even twist your nose.
It's my favorite way of showing you,
That I hope our friendship grows.

We swam the creek in our underware.
With a rope in a tree for a swing.
You would tease me for my skinny legs.
I would laugh at the way you sing.

We gave each other nicknames'
That would last the rest of our life.
I carved our initials in a tree,
When I borrowed my dad's pocket knife.

When I turned sixteen on my birthday
And you gave me a kiss for a present.
I never expected you'd do such a thing,
But I had to admit it was pleasant.

I knew at that very moment,
That we would be together for life.
I had fallen in love with a "tom boy"
And I was going to make you my wife.

Now we've been together a life time.
And nothing will tear us apart.
So long as our initials remain on that tree
And you love is carved in my heart.
