Daelian looked up at the moon from the window of her room in the hotel. She had bought some food and locked herself up in a room for the rest of the evening, not wanting to be bothered. She pulled out a picture of her brother and placed it on the table by the bed.
She looked at the clock in the corner as it chimed to tell her midnight had arrived. A soft knock came on her door as soon as the chimes stopped, making her jumped from her bed. She stared at the door for a moment, not sure whether she wanted to say anything or just pretend she had fallen asleep.
"Daelian?" a soft voice said. "It's me, Korick."
Korick sighed and put his hand softly on the door, not sure if she was asleep or just ignoring him. He looked down, deciding to give up for the night when the lock made a noise. He stared at the door, not sure if that meant she unlocked, or if she had just locked it to keep him out.
After a couple of moments of silence, he finally tried the doorknob. He was surpised to see the door open so easily. As he entered, he noticed that she was sitting on the bed, her eyes on the window and looking out into the dark sky. He noticed the photo sitting on the table and frowned, not sure what to say anymore.
"Are..." Korick sighed, looking at her. "Are you okay?"
"Have you ever noticed how haunting the night sky can be?" she asked softly, her voice barely audible.
"Don't want to tell me what's bothering you?" Korick asked, worry in his eyes.
Daelian shook her head, refusing to look at him. "If I tell you, then we'll just get closer and I don't want that to happen."
"You don't want to be close to me?" Korick sounded hurt.
"No, I don't," Daelian frowned, finally turning to look at him. "Once this journey is over with, if we don't all die first, then you'll just leave anyway. So I don't see much of a point in trying to get close to you. It's always the same thing."
"So that's what you think," Korick sighed, walking over to stand beside her. His eyes looked out the window now, deciding it was best not to look at her. "So you think I'd just merrily skip back to my town and forget this entire thing? You think I'm that shallow?"
"Korick..." Daelain sighed.
"No, stop," Korick looked at her. "Do you know just how many people have come to that town saying that they were going to get rid of the Shadows? Do you know how many people have tried to ask for others to join them? I'm sure the list would be over fifty, but I didn't go with them. Instead, I decided the moment I saw you that I wanted to help. All I had to do was hear you say you were on this mission, and I decided to be apart of it.
"You know, the Great Mother always told me that when I found someone I could put all of my trust into, I shouldn't question it. Questioning things is what makes everything fall apart. So I didn't question the feelings that went over me. I just went along and trusted myself. You know what? I'm glad I did, because at least I found out what I could feel."
Daelian stared at him, holding back any emotions that came up. "You can say things all you want, but that doesn't make it true."
"I wasn't going to go back to my town," Korick interrupted. "And if I did, it was to only see that Great Mother was okay, and tell her about how I met the person she was talking about. After that, I would walk to the ends of the earth with you. I would travel to any land you wanted. But I guess plans change."
Korick walked to the door, shaking his head. "If you can't trust me, then you could never love me."
"Do you know what 'Amin mela lle' means?" Daelian cried as Korick opened the door.
Korick turned to look at her, shaking his head. "No. Elves and their language confuse me."
Korick shut the door softly behind him, leaving her to her thoughts. Daelian let out a cry and fell down onto the bed, tears rolling down her face. She hit the pillows angrily, mad at herself for not trusting anyone.
"It means 'I love you'," she said softly to herself. "but I'm scared, because the people I love die."
