A True Poet ~Devochka Dark Writer ~

Ok I've been thinking the past few days, this is for you poets out there. Do you sit down and think about what you write before you write, or do you just write? For me, I just open the poetry page, and just start typing, not even thinking about what I write, until I send it and then go back and re-read it, and then I send and then re-read it, and that is why there are spelling errors, forgive me I'm not perfect. I find that I write most of my better piece when I dont think about what I write, and I just sit here and type and then send, and get replies and re-read it later, when I cant type anymore. Do a lot of you do that, or do you sit here and think about what you write, and then type slowly so you get it perfect, or do you prepare it before hand?

Sometimes I do want to plan this, but when I think why should I plan this stuff, it doesnt work. because it would take all night, and it would kind of sound duel, or something. Sometimes a lot of words are there, and I dont know where I place them, so I let the fingers do the typing true the words dont match and a lot of the poetry, well we dont go there, but hey like I said most are really good dont you agree?

What about you how do you do yours?

Date: 5/14/2004 2:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    I just write and let my mind flow, I cannot plan or prepare poetry, it just comes from my heart. I often write and then re-read it and it amazes me, I dont know where it comes from! Sometimes I feel as if the words arent even mine, its a strange but enchanting feeling :) when it comes to writing essays and school papers even then, although I plan how the paper will be organized, I just write it.... interesting, never really thought about it, cool post :)
Date: 5/14/2004 5:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    When I'm feeling strong emotions, like anger or sadness, the words just flow. Other time I just put down the 1st thing that pops into my head.
Date: 5/14/2004 5:50:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18887    thankies everyone for your input it does open your mind when you arent really thinking about it
Date: 5/14/2004 10:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    As a teen when I wrote poetry, it took some overwhelming emotion to inspire it as a rule. Many years later, a phrase comes into my mind and stays there until I write a poem around it. Sometimes a poem will be partially written in a dream, believe it or not.
Date: 5/15/2004 5:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 55386    I just write. Anywhere, even on myself if there is nothing else around! Whatever comes at the moment....I believe the best poems are ones you aren't aware of until you've written it all out and read them.
Date: 5/15/2004 5:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    I feel, that my poetry is not that of my own. Let me explain before you say I am taking someone else's thoughts, I assure you, Lol.. not when you read my poetry.. it is rather dark and moody... and very Pagan (-: When my poetry comes to me, it hits hard.. real hard, to where I totally drop everything and it is as if someone crawled into my body to use my fingers, and for a little while, I do feel as if I am like standing beside myself watching the focus and concentration as "I" type. This make sense to anyone?? When the spirit or the feeling to stop typing goes elsewhere, I am left reading something I sometimes actually ponder about wether I did it, or someone on the other side just HAD to get it out to the masses. There are usually messages within my poetry, it can be taken in any way, any thought... universal in a sense. I always give credit to Goddess for sending spirit to get out the spiritual message.. yet, I am there to take credit. I read some of it, and think to myself, "Whoa, that came from within me?"... so I guess I would have to say that I just let it flow, take over and when the feeling passes, well there ya go, what I call my own works through Grace of Goddess Hand (-:
Date: 5/15/2004 6:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 22992    I prefer to just write what comes to me.. if i get stuck i get out a piece of paper and just write random words that ocme to mind, then try to incorporate them into an understandable sentence.. i feel i am more creative when my poetry isnt planned.. :)
Date: 5/15/2004 7:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 62506    Hello daughter,I am a huge fan of your poetry...and yes, there is an external source that gives me my words.I sometimes feel...possesed to write something and it is successful.I seldom try to force a poem, it just doesn't work.I do rewrite it to make it more legible to my mind.Wonderful post by the way.~Daddy
Date: 5/15/2004 7:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 33286    what you say here is exactly the reason I don't read poetry on this site any more. too many people here don't care how a poem reads. personally, I write my stuff in my word processor and then hit "spell check". there are other poetry sites online that have spell checkers built right into them, and the people who reply to your stuff expect you to use it... but in actuality, spelling is the least of my problems when it comes to reading others poetry. it has to make sense and flow. (judging just by this post and your replies, I would not be reading much of your stuff.) you will get lots of wonderful replies here, but it is not very helpful if you are trying to become a better writer... if you really want to find out what people think of your writing I would suggest finding a poetry critique site, like writing.com or eratosphere.com but there are thousands to chose from, or if you think your stuff is good enough, try submitting to publishers, but be prepared for rejection letters because all publishers look not only for perfection, but for poetry that fits the magazine.
I am not saying this to be mean to you, it is just my reality now.

Date: 5/15/2004 8:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 14780    There are a few poems of mine..that I can truly say are meditated and sent from a Higher Source..I sometimes wonder, "Where did that come from?" When I get the feel for writing I will take to my bedroom shut the door and light a few candles on a TV Tray... turn out the light, chant/pray and sit and write....My best poetry has came to me that way but ofcourse credit is given where its due. :)
Date: 5/15/2004 9:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 43186    A lto of times I will read or see soemthing that will get me going. I tend to put myself in other's situations and write how I think they would feel in a certain situation. I also just write from what I am feeling. I do check it over and spell check it before I post it however. Good post. Hugs,
Date: 5/15/2004 11:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 5349    I pick up a pen and notebook or sit at my computer with MS Word open and let my heart do the writing
Date: 5/15/2004 11:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 49910    Sometimes I write without really thinking and I just let sall the words flow out and keep typing how I feel. Without looking back to say.. oh man I really don't like the way I said that. I may get writers blcok and delete them. Most of the time I take my time in my poetry because I like to write poems that people want to read more than once. I use a thesaurus when I write also. It tends to expand my vocabulary so it's not like I write the same words every time I write a poem. You follow? Well... from one poet to another.. write with your heart and mind. -ERHIT
Date: 5/15/2004 12:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 13546    I write every poem down on a piece of paper, I love handwriting things, usually the words just flow out, I don't really plan my poetry, it just happens! It always seems to "flow" from an unknown source.. hmm.. :)
Date: 5/15/2004 1:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 60685    In my case I don't plan on writing, it comes to me and I grab the first piece of paper I can find or if I'm on the computer I simply type it. I used to hate it when I had writing assignments in my English Lit class, it made it that much harder and definitely boring cause I had to write what another person wanted me to. Anyway, sometimes I try to make it rhyme but if it doesn't I don't lose sleep over it ;)
Date: 5/15/2004 2:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 13283    I agree with Timbo . Writing poetry is a craft . It must have flow and one must use care and detail when writing it . Call me unsophisticated if you want , but I stick mainly to rhyming poetry . I do a rough draft on a piece of paper first then I put it on microsoft word and then I cut and paste it onto USM . :) Razzy aka
Date: 5/15/2004 4:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hello, Dark Writer. My attempts at poetry, however mundane, are for my own satisfaction as much as that of the viewing audience. I won't say that I don't care whether it's read or isn't read, 'cause that's not true. I do care and I get-off when people read. Sometimes the words come easy, other times it's tough. Five minutes or five days to get it right. Either one enjoys writing, or they don't. I do. Interesting point you've made, my friend. Write on...:)
Date: 5/15/2004 4:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    Why don't you let it all flow like you said you do, then PUT IT AWAY for a little bit before sending it, then go back and correct spelling and maybe re-do some of it? That's what most professionals do, and believe me, any time in between drafts can mean the world of difference. I mean, coming back to something after a day or a week, or even a month, can give you another insightful perspective.
Date: 5/15/2004 5:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 42568    I've written a lot of free style poetry and never thought about what I was going to write about or how I was going to write it. I look back at those poems now and wonder how I got the courage to post them. People here always told me they were "great" or "well written" and "had a lot of feeling" so I thought I was doing well at writing. I started to take a real interest in poetry and read a few poetry books. I took notice to the difference between professional writing and my own. I wanted to do something about that. I'm still not the greatest poet and probably will never be ... but I know I've put a lot of time and effort into the latter selection of my poetry and I feel proud anyway.
Date: 5/15/2004 8:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 56840    Hmmm...there is so much I could put here that would make people mad. I am not the kind of person who writes for another person, I don't write with the intention of the poem being a gift per se, or for a certain something.. Actually..most of what I write I write for myself, simply because if I didn't write or let out my stress and emotions somehow, I'd probably have been sent away with the men in white coats long ago. Sometimes, when I write, I know a little of how I want the cadence of it to feel, but I don't let myself be guided strictly by that. Most of my poems don't rhyme, and that is because I didn't feel rhyme was needed in that instance, or it fell out of me and it wasn't in the form of rhyme anyway. And sometimes when I write, it is about something that has been sitting brooding in the back of my mind for days, even months, that I haven't brought out yet because either it was not ripe at the time, or I was afraid or too emotional about it to produce decent work. In a nutshell, no, I do not plan my poetry, though I might ruminate on something before I write about it. Poem structure is not something I believe should be set until you actually start the first line or two, and you see in your head what could be next, where the next stepping stone is, how do you feel when you rhyme it, is it what you want? I don't force poems to rhyme if they don't begin to rhyme on their own. Once in a while I do type poems directly into the poems box to submit here, when I'm so itching to write something and I happen to be online. But most of my poems begin in my journal on my comp, when I'm writing whatever I want to write. They seem to pop up without notice..
Date: 5/16/2004 5:15:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18887    Sur5r I hear ya there, sometimes I feel like someone is typing for me, but the words are being spoken through me, its kind of weird but cool in a way. I love when they come to me, and when people read my things, and respond, hey its worth it, when they dont, maybe its because they dont know what to think, or because they dont understand it, or something.
Date: 5/16/2004 5:18:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18887    Hack, yes I see you dont read a lot of my stuff, but hey its your choice. I dont go over and check for spelling errors, I do however, correct them when i send them to publishers, im not that stupid, and yes I have been published before so I know how it works. I type fast, just becauser the words come faster then my hands can keep up, and becasue the words dont come easy, i bet you get that sometimes, cant you keep up. or do you lose that poetry and go on to the next one? You know every poet is differnt, some take their time, and some dont. i bet if i went through yours i could find a mistake, i dont read yours either. im not being mean, just being honest
Date: 5/16/2004 5:20:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18887    ERHIT smetimes using the simpliest words make the best poems ya know ;) but yeah i know what you mean, and yeah you do have some good work. :)
Date: 5/16/2004 5:22:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18887    hiya Kronk, yeah i do love when i get replies and people tend to enjoy the writing i write, bu when they dont reply it makes me wonder if i did something wrong, or if i did something right?
Date: 5/16/2004 5:22:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18887    writing isnt really a craft, its a gift my dear
Date: 5/16/2004 5:23:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18887    Bethann your a great poet my dear
Date: 5/16/2004 7:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 33286    oh you are so right, you would find mistakes in my work, more in the earlier posts than the later ones, and the fact that I can't go back and fix them, or delete the experiments that didn't work, is one of the reasons I don't post here any more. one of the other reasons is that out of the 600 or so poems I have posted here I can't recall one comment that pointed out a mistake or problem.(believe me, I used to get hundreds of comments on single poems, but it was more of a party on the post than anything else.)
Date: 5/16/2004 8:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 10030    I type my poetry in Word or write it on looseleaf before typing it. Then I go back over it to make it is absolutly "perfect" before asking the opinions of other writers. I care about my writing, and that's why I double check spelling, punctuation, and meter. I firmly believe that all writing, not just poetry, should go through a rough draft stage and be looked over several times before being posted in a forum or given to a beta reader.
Date: 5/18/2004 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    Well I'm not a big poet but I have writen my shear of poetry. I do the same as with storys. An idea comes to mind and I write. I'm bad at re-reading so I do it the same. I always use a computer. I love your poetry!!! Writing is something that comes from the soul, it is soul writing and only your heart can write it.
Date: 5/18/2004 8:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    writing is a gift, I agree Lisa!!
Date: 9/16/2005 5:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I've done my best writing in school, when I was bored in my classes. At home, it's not as good. Boredom must do something to me.
