Class Sees Beheading ~~~Humming Bird

May 15 - Seniors in English teacher Stephen Arcudi's fourth-period class at Villa Park High School had just taken a test on "Pride and Prejudice'' when he invited everyone up to his desk.

Saying that atrocities are occurring on both sides of the Iraqi war, Arcudi played the entire video footage on his laptop of the beheading of American citizen Nicholas Berg by hooded Islamic militants.

There were several complaints made by students and Parents of this teacher for showing such graphic footage to students and the the teacher was suspended while this case is investigated. There was no lesson pretaining to world affairs, this was an English Class and his case for showing this footage to his students was that he wanted his students to see that there are atrocities occuring on both sides of the war....what is you opinion on this suspention of the teacher and how do you feel about this situation?

My opinion is that that teacher had no right to show these young minds such graphic footage not to mention something like this that is out side of the curriculum. I myself agree that it was right to suspend this teacher, but I was curiouse as to how everyone else felt about it.

Date: 5/15/2004 11:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    I would have been furious if I had been one of the parents of these kids. I'm 27 years old, and I've chose not to view the video. Not because I don't want to be aware of whats going on, but because I know that even as an adult, I couldn't handle it. It could scar those poor kids for life. What was that teacher thinking?
Date: 5/15/2004 11:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    When I first read your posts I mistook 4th period as 4th grade. Oops! Well its still an awful thing, even though they were seniors. I need to go to bed!
Date: 5/15/2004 11:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62682    I completly agree with you Snookums..I would also like to know what in the world that teacher was thinking..that is something that will stay with those students for ever...I couldnt handle it myself either if I were to see it.

Date: 5/16/2004 12:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    I would have been so upset if one of mine was shown this footage...whether they be seniors or not, who in their right mind would want to view this anyway, I hope he is fired...hugs
Date: 5/16/2004 1:27:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62682    I also hope this teacher is fired!!! I wonder what sick thought had to go through his mind to show these students that?
Thanks for your replies Folks...I just wanted to hear that people felt the same way I did. Ive heard alot of ppl saying that it wasnt that big of a deal which I think is tragic!

Date: 5/16/2004 2:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 49269    I absolutly agree, he had noright to show them that video, I have seen it and it is just horrific..
Date: 5/16/2004 3:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    I feel that a notice or some kind of survey should have been mailed to the parents, not sent home with the kids, and get input as to how they would want it handled. In today's technologies, there is the option to save the footage, for the provision of the parents opinions of the survey. That should have been a parental right to know first. I feel the teacher was out of line and did not get the proper confirmation to show the students. I would also think it would have affects on some of the students for a long while.
Date: 5/16/2004 4:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 21266    omg ive seen the video last night and i kept tossing and turning till 5 AM..!!! the scene was just horrible!!!
Date: 5/16/2004 6:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 3125    I don't need to view such a horrible thing and I would not want any of my grown children to see such a thing, unless they themselves choose to view such a thing, which they choose not to. That video does not belong in a class room and neither does that video itself prove that there are atrocities occurring on both sides, so his reason is shallow. If he would have shown them the Iraqi POW's being abused, then that would have been more in line with the message which he claimed he wanted to get across to the students. As for firing the teacher..I believe that he should perhaps be suspended for a time, but not fired for his bad judgment. If every teacher was fired because of some bad judgment they have made in the classroom, then I believe that many of them would be without a job. Also, Since the students were seniors they could have refused to view the video. IF the teacher would have insisted that they view it, then I could see a real reason to fire him.
Date: 5/16/2004 6:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 49101    I would have been hopping mad too if my kid saw this without my knowledge. I saw the video myself and it was much too much for a kid to handle, even if they are in highschool.
Date: 5/16/2004 6:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 37101    My drama teacher offered to anyone who wanted to see it, to come up and see it. I was one of them but no one was forced into anything and no one who didn't want to see it didn't have to, and they didn't. -
Date: 5/16/2004 7:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    I agree with you. He's an english teacher. He should teach english.
Date: 5/16/2004 8:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 10915    I agree. It wasn't part of the curriculum and he had no right to expose them to such a graphic video.
Date: 5/16/2004 9:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    That teacher had absolutley no right whatsoever to show it tohis students. I would have been furious....
Date: 5/16/2004 9:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    furthermore...I feel that this teacher should be fired immediately
Date: 5/16/2004 11:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 3263    A teacher here in Washington also showed the video to some kids in class. I think that's very wrong! It's bad enough knowing about it, but to see it...
Date: 5/16/2004 11:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 4255    I don't think its so bad. The students didn't HAVE to look, course he didn't HAVE to show it. But its whats happening now and everyone should know it. Showing the video to students might have been wrong, but I don't see it as that big of deal.
Date: 5/16/2004 12:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 4255    Also, they were seniors, they were around the age of 18, they could look at it if they wanted whether their parents knew about it or not.
Date: 5/16/2004 12:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 21867    Slightly agree with MysticGurl on this...sure, not a great idea for the teacher to be showing that video - but did the teacher hold their heads towards the laptop screen *given that laptop screens are rather small and not like huge viewing screens in classrooms* and forceably keep their eyes open?? I doubt it. Also...did the teacher just start rolling the footage from the first cut...or was it the whole video? If so theres a ton of time leading up to the actual beheading that any student could have walked away and elected NOT to watch it. Sorry...I do agree this is poor judgement on behalf of the teacher...but lets also not completely remove a lil thing could Personal Responsibility either. Peace,
Date: 5/16/2004 2:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 61966    I can understand how the teacher wanted the kids to know that this kind of stuff goes on, yet he had no right to show it to them. I'm 15 and I could barely handle it, seeing the video had me in tears and I can't believe a teacher would actually show it to students. I think it was right for him to be suspended...if he wanted them to know about it he should have just told them and they could have had a discussion instead of showing this terrible video.
Date: 5/16/2004 4:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    surely the reaons one should not wish to see the video would be due to respect for the victim as opposed to being too squeamish?
Date: 5/16/2004 10:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62682    I agree Dark Phoenix..for one it should have definatley not have been shown due to the graphic nature of this video but also out of respect for the victim and his family!

P.S. Thanks to all you who replied!

Date: 5/17/2004 7:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 62624    That is disgusting!!! I cannot believe that this teacher felt they had the right to show something like that to students!!!! That teacher should be fired!!!!
