Motherly Instincts In Overdrive... MissC. (Need some help)

Well, we have five bouncing baby kittens as of 11:30 PM. they are too cute for words! HOWEVER we have encountered some problems with the Mama.

First of all, she won't let our other two cats come into the house, which isn't fair because they were here first. So we are thinking of moving her upstairs away from the other two (which are both males)

Secondly, she seems to think my two nephews are hers. It is kind of cute, yet it poses a problem.

We first noticed this morning that something was "Off", when my nephew Christopher (18 Mos.) started crying for a bottle. He is toothing and just not in a very good mood these days.

She was in the front of the house nursing and he was in the back in the playroon, when he started to wail.

The cat leapt from her nest, and rushed into the room where he was. She did that rubbing against his legs thing that they do, and that half purr half meow thing too. Then she laid down tummy up, and I think she was trying to nurse him. (In the mean time we all watched in awe, and were kinda laughing a little)

But then she tried to herd him to her nest. She tried doing the same to the three year old. I am a little concerned because she is spending more time with the big babies than her own, which is funny when she is trying to herd them, but at the same time I worry for her kittens.

It is really funny to watch, but still bothersome.

She keeps doing it, especially when one of them cries. I have never seen a cat do this before, I am amazed.

*Shrugs*

Is there anything I should do?

Date: 5/16/2004 8:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    I wish I could help ya Miss C. But I don't know what to tell you. I know when I brought my kitten home he was only 2 pounds in weight..and I have a big American Eskimo...you can just imagine how funny it was to see the little kitten cuddle up to the big dog...and they bonded....even the vet said it was amazing that things like that don't normally happen...but I'll ask some of my friends and see what they have to tell you
Date: 5/16/2004 8:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    Her hormones are going nuts right now and anything that looks like a "baby" to her is going to get some attention. I had a dog once try and "nurse" the owner's daughter's collection of pound puppies. She should be fine. She doesn't want the other cats around because in the wild cats will kill other queen's offspring (queen is the name for a non spayed cat female)... anyhow. Good luck! Post pictures!
Date: 5/16/2004 8:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 62588    I watched a show on the discovery channel a few years ago that explains why she doesnt want the other cats in the house.. in nature a male cat will eat the kittens to get the mother to go into heat again. Gross.. My boyfriend used to live on a farm and says he's seen it happen and had to do more then one kitty rescue.
Date: 5/16/2004 8:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 62588    eh.. maybe it is a good idea to put the males outside for a while or to put them in a room with the momma where the other cats can't get in
Date: 5/16/2004 8:40:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    This all sounds like perfectly sound advice! THANKS!
Date: 5/16/2004 1:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 56489    Miss C., As much as I hate to say it, but she won't let the males in due to the kittens they will eat them even if they lived there before her, it's just males instinct to kill kittens when born. After kittens get big enought to fend for themselves she'll go back to normal. As for the nursing for the kittens you need not to worry she knows when they need her she just comes out for a break from them nursing constantly. As for the kids she's just very motherly & checking on them too. But I'll tell you one thing that's good cat to have around, that's one that's smart enough to come get you when something is wrong. But as for her & the kittens, if you want to let the males in to rest from the outside, "Please" keep the kittens secluded from the males. I know first hand this will & can happen. (hugs)
