THE LOST PINES OF TEXAS - delion

Traveling west from Giddings on US 290 and then turning southwest on Texas 21 will bring you into a forest that seems out of place. The traveler will be among towering loblolly pines, known as the Lost Pines of Texas. This unique woodland area is referred to as the Lost Pines because it is separated from the main pineywoods of East Texas by nearly 100 miles. Connecting the two is a stretch of rolling post-oak woodlands. The cause for separation between this western remnant of pines and the main body in East Texas is unknown, but theories abound. Some suggest that a devastating natural forest fire may have caused separation. Others offer the possibility of controlled burning by Indian tribes which affected the pines and their seedlings. Or, perhaps birds or other wildlife inadvertently brought pineseeds into the area when growth conditions were favorable. Early Americans may have done this planting, pre-dating our Texas Forest Service and its good work. From www.rtis.com

Date: 5/17/2004 11:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 53836    cool, it's about 2 1/2 hours NE of here...maybe one boring Sunday, :)
Date: 5/17/2004 11:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 55967    I KNOW what happened. My Grandmother!! Yes. She always burned pine in the wood stove at home, and at the cabin. She always said the "fire-scent" of pine was the best, and it burned the best, and she ALWAYS needed the darn stoves (in both places) lit. She burned more pine than anyone else since Davy Crockett. It had to be her, since I don't know where she got all that pine from.
Date: 5/17/2004 11:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 55967    ^^^What I was getting at with the above was that my grandma used up all the forest BETWEEN the western "lost pines" and the eastern forest.
Date: 5/19/2004 8:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 28363    I always wondered about those Pines
