A REAL AMERICAN HERO..... Brian Chontosh

I was going to post this under "in the news" but you won't hear this in the news.

A Real Hero

May 07 Lonsberry Column

SOMETHING THAT DIDN'T MAKE THE NEWS

Maybe you'd like to hear about something other than idiot Reservists and naked Iraqis.

Maybe you'd like to hear about a real American, somebody who honored the uniform he wears.

Meet Brian Chontosh.

Churchville-Chili Central School class of 1991. Proud graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Husband and about-to-be father. First lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

And a genuine hero.

The secretary of the Navy said so yesterday.

At 29 Palms in California Brian Chontosh was presented with the Navy Cross, the second highest award for combat bravery the United States can bestow.

That's a big deal.

But you won't see it on the network news tonight, and all you read in Brian's hometown newspaper was two paragraphs of nothing. Instead, it was more blather about some mental defective MPs who acted like animals.

The odd fact about the American media in this war is that it's not covering the American military. The most plugged-in nation in the world is receiving virtually no true information about what its warriors are doing.

Oh, sure, there's a body count. We know how many Americans have fallen. And we see those same casket pictures day in and day out. And we're almost on a first-name basis with the pukes who abused the Iraqi prisoners. And we know all about improvised explosive devices and how we lost Fallujah and what Arab public-opinion polls say about us and how the world hates us.

We get a non-stop feed of gloom and doom.

But we don't hear about the heroes.

The incredibly brave GIs who honorably do their duty. The ones our grandparents would have carried on their shoulders down Fifth Avenue.

The ones we completely ignore.

Like Brian Chontosh.

It was a year ago on the march into Baghdad. Brian Chontosh was a platoon leader rolling up Highway 1 in a humvee. When all hell broke loose. Ambush city.

The young Marines were being cut to ribbons. Mortars, machine guns, rocket propelled grenades. And the kid out of Churchville was in charge. It was do or die and it was up to him. So he moved to the side of his column, looking for a way to lead his men to safety. As he tried to poke a hole through the Iraqi line his humvee came under direct enemy machine gun fire.

It was fish in a barrel and the Marines were the fish. And Brian Chontosh gave the order to attack. He told his driver to floor the humvee directly at the machine gun emplacement that was firing at them. And he had the guy on top with the 50 cal unload on them.

Within moments there were Iraqis slumped across the machine gun and Chontosh was still advancing, ordering his driver now to take the humvee directly into the Iraqi trench that was attacking his Marines. Over into the battlement the humvee went and out the door Brian Chontosh bailed, carrying an M16 and a Beretta and 228 years of Marine Corps pride.

And he ran down the trench. With its mortars and riflemen, machineguns and grenadiers. And he killed them all.

He fought with the M16 until he was out of ammo. Then he fought with the Beretta until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up a dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up another dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo.

At one point he even fired a discarded Iraqi RPG into an enemy cluster, sending attackers flying with its grenade explosion.

When he was done Brian Chontosh had cleared 200 yards of entrenched Iraqis from his platoon's flank. He had killed more than 20 and wounded at least as many more.

But that's probably not how he would tell it.

He would probably merely say that his Marines were in trouble, and he got them out of trouble. Hoo-ah, and drive on.

"By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, unlimited courage in the face of heavy enemy fire, and utmost devotion to duty, 1st Lt. Chontosh reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service."

That's what the citation says. And that's what nobody will hear. That's what doesn't seem to be making the evening news. Accounts of American valor are dismissed by the press as propaganda, yet accounts of American difficulties are heralded as objectivity. It makes you wonder if the role of the media is to inform, or to depress - to report or to deride. To tell the truth, or to feed us lies.

But I guess it doesn't matter.

We're going to turn out all right.

As long as men like Brian Chontosh wear our uniform.

Date: 5/17/2004 11:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    I had read about this Marines heroics, and I'm proud that America still manages to produce men like that. Unfortunately those who hate the administration in power have no use for information like this. They fawn over and go all out for the negative for none other than political reasons. It's very sad.
Date: 5/17/2004 11:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    THIS SHOULD BE TOP DEAD CENTRE!!! This man deserves more than a medal, his driver and machine gunner deserve the same. What happened to them?
Date: 5/17/2004 11:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 19772    Thanks for posting this. It's nice to hear a little good news once in awhile. The media has turned this entire war and everything it was supossed to stand for into a three ring circus. Thanks again for informing us of this true American hero. ~Gabrielle~
Date: 5/17/2004 12:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    I don't have any info on the rest of his team Magoo, this is all I got. But you probably won't hear about THEM in the news either.....
Date: 5/17/2004 12:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    Thanks for the replies BCAR, Jynx and Magoo...
Date: 5/17/2004 3:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 3263    A hero indeed. Sad how we haven't and probably will not hear about it (other than your post) Thanks for sharing :D
Date: 5/17/2004 3:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    This reminds us that war brings out the best as well as the worst (MPs mistreating prisoners) in people. We need to see both in the media for balance. Thank you so much for a piece of inspiring news after a bath of bad news.
Date: 5/17/2004 3:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 46530    The problem with this is that Brian Chontosh was doing his job. Nothing more. Yes what he did is heroic, but he gets paid for that. The media only want to report on what is out of the ordinary, and generally bad news.
Date: 5/17/2004 4:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    Ad, that is not an acurate statement. Medals of Valor are given for going above and beyond the call of duty, and usualy, in the process, putting yourself in harms way. In fact, what Brian did was very "out of the ordinary". He saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. If you can't appreciate that then please don't waste my time...
Date: 5/17/2004 4:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    Thank You Brian for all you have done and do. And thank you Raybone for this post
Date: 5/17/2004 5:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    It is a shame that we dont hear more about brave young soldiers like Brian, but even if we did all alot of people would hear is how he killed others instead of how he saved many. Thanks for the post.
Date: 5/17/2004 5:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 3835    Thank you, for being someone who wants to recognize those of great importance with their contributions of good. This was one exceptional post. I would like to read more of these. I agree with some of the comments about always hearing of the negative these days.. we all need to focus more on the positives in life. Thank you, Raybone, for posting this. I hope you find more to share with us in the future.
Date: 5/18/2004 9:21:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    Thinker, I am not interested in your "unrelated rhetoric". This post is about bravery in the face of enemy fire. About putting ones own life in jeopardy to save the lives of your fellow man. It has NOTHING to do with the politics of the war, or even whether or not we should be there. It is about bravery and honor, and standing up for what you believe in, whatever the cost.....
Date: 5/18/2004 9:23:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    And YES, like it or not, Brian is over there fighting for YOUR freedom. I think you could show HIM a little respect and gratitude.....
Date: 5/18/2004 9:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 24924    Brian is over there fighting for OIL! He only thinks and believes that it is for "freedom" and "liberation", as did the guy who I quoted!
Date: 5/18/2004 11:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    Nope.... I'll leave them there..... As usual, "thinker", you have neither read the post nor the replies. And as usual, you manage to dissagree with me no matter what I am posting. Why do you bother?.....
Date: 5/18/2004 12:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    thanks for posting this
Date: 5/18/2004 1:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    Thinker why don't you get up from your computer put on a flipping uniform and deal with the crap that people like you put on your soldiers every day. It doesn't matter what you think about why the soldiers are over there, this man did what is above and beyond his duty, who are you to ridicule his patriotic right to be a soldier, without him and others like him you would be sitting in your hut without power watching the world over run you. Why is it you are so ignorant when it comes to the people who are defending you? Don't give me some speil about they are all evil and the government is evil and we would be better off without them. Do the words, show respect and you will be given respect not mean anything to you? You scream at Raybone to DELETE ME DELETE ME! Personally if I had the right I would delete a bunch of your responses which are not on topic and basically ranting at others. Its time to grow up and show respect for those who are risking their lives so you can sit at home and berate them. You don't have to respect the uniform but respect the man!
Date: 5/18/2004 2:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    Thank you Magoo, and thank you everyone else who has replied here. It is good to know that there are some TRUE Americans here who love their freedom and appreciate the things that our brave men and women are doing over there so far from their families and loved ones. I am PROUD to be an American....
Date: 5/18/2004 2:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    Like it or not, there is NO BETTER COUNTRY in the WORLD...
Date: 5/18/2004 2:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    Ummm! Raybone, I am a soldier and I am proud but I AM CANADIAN!!! :o) I can appreciate heroism no matter what country it comes from!
Date: 5/18/2004 2:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    That's OK Magoo, you have the heart of someone who appreciates freedom. That's OK with me whatever country you are from...
Date: 5/18/2004 2:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    Okay but you do realise Canada is BETTER! :oP
Date: 5/18/2004 2:51:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    LOL... Magoo... Canada does have some very good things going for it... You, for one....
Date: 5/18/2004 2:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    WOOHOO! Finally someone to appreciate all things Magoo! You are okay yourself Raybone!
Date: 6/10/2004 6:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 27534    I read the Marine Home page a couple of weeks ago .....regardless of why he is there politically....it is a comfort to know that he is ....taking care of those entrusted to him .....his troops.
Date: 6/18/2004 12:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 10030    Thank you for this post.
Date: 6/18/2004 7:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12806    You're welcome Holliberry, and thanks for reading it and replying......
Date: 2/2/2007 3:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 63077    Semper. The gentleman in question is now a Captain in the US Marine Corps, is stationed at The Basic School in Virginia, training new Lieutenants. Hopefully one day they can all do as well as he did. (I know I'm a bit late :-P )
