I usually buckle up and we have the click it or ticket thing here in Arkansas too. I see both sides of this. Yes, a seat belt is uncomfortable, and yes, it is a 2 second inconveniance. But also not only does it help save you , but if you get in a wreck, even if others are wearing their seatbelts, a non-seatbelt-wearer can actually inflict death upon them. Many times, the person who didn't buckle was the cause of other people's death rather than the wreck itself. This is because they are bouncing all around the car and hitting the other passengers. As soon as I learned that, I started buckling up. Hurting myself doesn't much scare me, but hurting others does! |

Yep, it's a law here in Michigan. And it should be, as long as it doesn't include the backseat for those of us over 16. If I'm on a long trip, and I want to lay down and sleep, let me! But yes, i always buckle up when driving and in the passenger seat. and of course, if i'm with a driver who..well, could be better lol |

I think it is becoming a national law to wear your seatbelt. I really am not to sure though. Every state I have lived in has the click it or ticket law. I personally wear a seatbelt. I feel naked in the car without one. On occasion I will not wear one in the backseat. Its a habit that I do not even think about anymore. Good post and good question there Rose. In NZ you must wear a safety belt...there are some exceptions, but they are few and the person needs to be 'certified' to drive without a buckled up safety belt. Personally I simply CAN'T drive without one...it just feels too unnatural not to be buckled up into my seat. And umm..hehe...trust me...in my car ya really wanna be secured firmly into the seat...or ya might just got flying sideways through the corners Peace, |

As for my opinion on whether or not it should be a law...I feel it should be MANDATORY for children or any passenger under the age of 18 in every state. Once an adult, I feel if a person doesn't want to ensure their own safety it's their choice. This for me is basically just another way for the insurance companies to lose less money and for the cops to bring in more cash for writing tickets. |

But yes...it is every drivers right to be treated like an Adult...and to excise their rights of choice...coz its much better to have choice - and hey, whats a lil Plastic Surgery when they have to removed pieces of the windscreen from your face...or rebuild your dental work due to slamming mouth-first into the steering wheel...or reset those popped/flailing ribs from crunching against the dashboard...or scrape bits of you off the road coz you shredded yourself going clean out the window and grinding along the asphalt. As long as you exericed your right to choose. Peace, |

I do buckle up because I have seen first hand what not buckling up can do. My son's father used to drive a tow truck and I went on several calls with him to pick up accident vehicles and saw once where a child not wearing his belt was ejected from a vehicle and had another vehicle land on top of him. One of my best friends was ejected from her vehicle on a major interstate here in Florida also had she been in a belt she would have more then likely survived. I am kinda mixed on whether it should be a law I do feel it should be because it does save lives but at the same time if you do not want to wear a belt you should not have to |

Oh yea and I feel it should be mandatory for parents to make sure not only are their children buckled or in a safty seat but restrained properly. If they are not restrained properly it is almost as bad as not being restrained at all. It makes me physically ill to be driving down the road and see a car with a child bouncing around the seat with no belt on. The parent may not think they are going to be in an accident but if they were chances are their child will either be severly injured or dead and all because the child was not restrained |

click it or ticket is a nation wide thing, anyone in america has that law... sad thing is they only talk about the possitives of seatbelts, my dad knew these kids that went to his school, one buckled on wasn't, they crashed into a big tree and the unbuckled driver was thrown to safty while the other was trapped, both were knocked unconscience but one burned while the other only had stitches and minor road rash. bad thing when they don't bother to mention the bruising, crushed rib cages, and cuts that can also happen while in an accident from seatbelts... |

Joshie lots of things that can save lives can also take lives(like medications and immunizations for example) that doesnt mean that we should not use them and in the case of seat belts enforce their use. |

Click it or ticket is the law in Ohio to, but I don't agree with it. My parents owned a towing company since before I was born and when I was eight, my dad was in the news because of it. He got a sherrif's tow one night, and the car was on fire. Apperently some kids were coming home from prom and they had been drinking. They saw some friends walking home and stopped to pick them up. Well, there was a wreck and the car was an old one. The kids in the back seat had put on their seat belts and couldn't get them undone. Like I said it was an older car, so I don't know if they couldn't figure it out or if the seatbelts were stuck. My dad got there before the fire was out, and I guess he saw one of the kids' arms smash against the back window, trying to get out. He saw them pull the crispy bodies out of the car, and he was open with sharing the story (not with us - we were too young, but we were there when he told the story). It still freaks me out, and I cringe every time I put on my seatbelt. I know that this isn't the norm, but it freaks me out. I hate buckling the kids into their car seats for fear of not being able to get to them if the car flips, even though I realize that this was a freak thing. |

Yes, and I wear my seatbelt religiously. I think I am even shorter than you, but I feel safer wearing my seatbelt because I know they work.................... One way I can prove that is when I was 11, I was riding with my sister and she was on a different seizure medication at the time that made her lose her attention at times(we didnt know this at the time). Anyways we were going out to dinner with mom, and mom was in her vehicle with her friend, and I was riding in Tamara's car with her. We were in a turning lane, and Tamara didnt notice that it was one of the lights that let oncoming traffic come through. Tamara didnt notice this because she thought the jeep would slow down, she went to turn and the jeep hit us going about 50 Mph. It impacted about a foot or less from my door, which I thank god, because if it had hit right into the door, I probably wouldnt be here writing this. The wreck sent his rag topped jeep flipping about 4 times and it skid another 30 feet before stopping and our car just spun in circles. I was bruised and cut up pretty bad from the glass shattering, and had some internal bruising as well, but the seatbelt saved my life. If I weren't buckled up I would have flown out the window or worse out the passenger window. So, in most cases they do save lives, but it should be up to the person, whether they wear them or not. But, its the law. *hugs* |

It's mandatory here in PA. They just passed a law here where you no longer have to wear a motorcycle helmet. Doesn't make sense. You are allowed to ride a bike without a helmet, but you aren't allowed to ride in a car without a seatbelt on. Kids under 40 pounds have to be in a carseat. I personally don't buckle up, but I make my kids buckle up every time. |

Yes, it is a law in Texas. It depends on which vehicles I drive, in one of my trucks the seatbelt is messed up so I only put it on if I'm driving in town. It should not be a law, but I doubt it will go away because of the profit the state makes from the tickets. |
