India is the root word of ' Indian. ' I have a friend from India, and she refers to herself as an Indian. Yep, I think they are. |

Indians are not from India. I am of American Indian ancestory, and we are from here in America. In fact, I have a plaque on my desk that is titled "Indian Prayer", not Native American Prayer. It is not the Bureau of Native American Affairs, but Bureau of Indian Affairs. Many of us do prefer to be named by our tribe, or by the terms Indian or American Indian. |

Then tell me, TwoSpirit, just what are people from India called? How did Native Americans come to be called ' Indians ' in the first place? Think Columbus and get back to me....... |

And no offense to you or your heritage.....but my adopted grandfather was of Native American blood, as well as two of my closer friends growing up, and they disliked the term ' Indian ' as it was based on a direct error on Columbus' part...ergo, I am going by the proverbial horse's mouth. |

Jay, you can go by whatever you like. Most of us prefer to be described by our tribal affiliation, or American Indian. Actually, native American refers to anyone born in America. American Indian, or Amerindian, refers to those of who are descended from the Indian tribes found in America. There are some who do go by the term Native American. The choice is actually up to the person, and not someone who is not of indian blood, or refuses to acknowledge their heritage. |
