The Long Lost Relatives Are Visiting... >>Bageera<<

...and I'm feeling very awkward about it all!

So here's the people who are coming. My cousin Jeremy (who's one year younger than me), my ex-auntie Di (my uncle and her were married, so I don't know what relationship category Di and I are now put in), and Di's son Grant, who is 22. Di's daughter, Alison, is 24 and lives in Sydney, and Di and her family are coming from Canowindra (in the country) to visit Alison.

According to my mother who had the phone conversation with Di, Di seemed to think that her family and us should get together while Di was with Alison. So... now we're having Di, Jeremy, Grant, Alison, and Alison's Chilean boyfriend (who is currently nameless) coming to stay with us for a few days.

Now here's the thing.

I haven't seen any of them since I was 7.

The last time I saw them, Grant was a rough and tumble 13 year old who constantly got into trouble (he only just recently wrote off his car when he was drunk with some mates and slammed it into a tree... he didn't have insurance so he has to pay off the damages), Alison used to sit there playing the Sega for most of her waking hours, and Jeremy and I used to sit opposite each other at the dinner table and give each other death stares, until an hour or two before I left where we would get along like best friends.

They're coming in July, in either the first or second week of the school holidays, but I can just sense that this whole "gathering" will be very strange since we haven't seen each other for years.

Will Di and my father still argue?

Will Alison still be connected to a video game console?

Will Grant still pronounce "th" as "f"?

Will Jeremy and I still give death stares?

So basically what I'm asking is, how many of you have had family reunions? How many have gone wrong? Should I just live for the moment and take any hassles as they come? Should I be prepared for something? Or just up for a good laugh?

Date: 6/18/2004 1:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 28193    I'm with Star Two..I really don't like family reunions. We had one about four years ago, and there were a couple of cousins I hadn't seen in over thirty years..I really don't even know these people, and I'm related to them.
Date: 6/18/2004 2:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 50499    Don't worry about it and just go with the flow.
Date: 6/18/2004 2:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    Enjoy getting to know your relatives. My aunts (father's sisters) had a reunion with their one living brother who had been missing for 40 years, a few years ago. They were all in their 70s and 80's. I thought it was wonderful that they were given that opportunity. Please take stay in touch with family members. Have a great time.
