Quite a few of us from USM have used this company to publish our books and I recently received the following in an email from "Man Of Asgard" and it is with his full permission that I post it now. Hopefully it will answer many questions.
The debate over PA has been going on like forever since they started. It seems like people either love them or hate them. They did my book and Frankenstein's book and anothe USMer...can't remember her name at the moment. We are all happy with PA. I will have them do other books. Unless you are already a famous best selling author, I believe PA is the best way to go. Here is why.
1. It cost you absolutely nothing to have them publish your book and set it up on Amazon, B&N, and Borders plus 6 or 7 overseas, markets. Plus you get two copies absolutely free. There may be others but I know no other that does this much for free. They even get you an ISBN which if you did it yourself would cost a lot . All the vanity publishers and other Print-On-Demand publishers charge you several hundred dollars
2. They make fantastic book covers and do a very nice book (top notch). It is still free.
3. They send out pre-published sales letters at their expense to up to 100 of your friends offering your book at a discount . They pay you royalties on those books sold. It still has cost you nothing.
4. If you want a professional reviewer to review your book, they will send them a free copy upon written request by the reviewer. Midwest Book Review, a very prestidigious reviewer my gave my book a great review and gave me five stars. The review was posted at Amazon, B&N, Borders and several other sites.
5. They give all their published authors a very nice free website of about five pages FREE!!!
6. Yes, they ask you to get involved to sell your book--but they don't require anything from you--you participate only as much as you wish to. They sell you your books at a author's discount, but you are not required to buy a single book if you don't wish to.
7. they sell your books at a discount on their own website and offer viewers the opportunity to post their reviews.
8. Sure, traditional publishers often pay several thousand dollars in advance to authors...but only to those authors who have proven themselves by selling lots of books, or if they think a new author is really going to sell a ton of books. I don't see myself in that category yet and am happy being published and that my book gets good reviews and has sold a few hundred copies. Maybe I'll soon be discovered and get a fabulous offer by someone, but until then--I have a book out there already published and it didn't cost me anything but my time.
9. It is true that they tie you up for 7 years with a contract which gives them the rights to publish your book, but you keep the copyrights and at the end of 7 years all rights return to you. During that 7 years a lot of the people that email you bad things about PA still won't have a word published because thay all think they are Steinbecks...and they are wating to be discovered and for someone else to do all the work and just send them money. That's fine for them, but it's not what I am about. Meanwhile I have a book that sells a few copies from time to time...gets me stories in the newspaper, gets me on TV, and on lectures at high schools and speaking engagements at bookclubs in libraries...not on Oprey or Jay Leno yet...but--hey who knows? So all you need to decide is if this is what you want. If so go with PA. If not don't. but ask yourself this...Where else can you get so much for free. And you can quote me if you want to. To me it is a case of having everything to gain and nothing to lose.
Going with PA hasn't hurt me or cost me one dollar. Today I have published book to be proud of.
Hope this helps.
Hugs,
PammieRose
