What would you do if your home was destroyed, you faced starvation, and then someone raped you? Right now, more than 1.2 million innocent Sudanese women, men and children are living out a similar fate and worse, and their own government is largely responsible.
They have been uprooted in the Darfur region of Sudan with over 150,000 refugees living - barely - along the border between Sudan and Chad, their homes, possessions and livelihoods destroyed by government-backed militias. "Five to six men would rape us, one after the other, for hours during six days, every night.
My husband could not forgive me after this, he disowned me," reported one Sudanese refugee woman interviewed by Amnesty International. The Sudanese government refuses to let humanitarian groups help, including repeated requests by Amnesty to document these events first-hand and mobilize other governments to stop the violence. It doesn't need to be this way. As a recipient of WomensWire, you can help Amnesty International stop these crimes by documenting the events and enlisting the needed influence of other governments: http://www.care2.com/go/z/15992
With your help, Amnesty will work to: -- Secure UN Intervention: A Security Council resolution is in the drafting stage calling on the Sudanese government to reign in the attacking militias. But we need to go farther. The UN must deploy monitors in sufficient numbers to protect refugees. Right now, the Sudanese government is acting with impunity and blatant disregard for the law. -- Pressure Secretary of State Powell: The US government considers Sudan a state sponsor of terrorism and has sanctions in place. Amnesty has asked Secretary Powell to demand an immediate halt of government-sponsored violence, and to continue pressing for UN action.
-- Activate the African Union: Through our long-standing relationships with African leaders and diplomats, Amnesty has been able to help organize their concern about the apparently deliberate slaughter and dislocation of the black African population of Darfur where the attacks are occurring. -- Involve the Government of Chad: More than 150,000 refugees from the violence are living in desperate conditions. Disease is rampant.
Food and water are in acute shortage. Our greatest near-term concern must be for the masses of refugees in camps inside Chad or huddled desperately along the border. Amnesty International was the first human rights group to call the world's attention to this horrific crisis. Now they just need resources on the front lines. Send your support today by using this secure web page: http://www.care2.com/go/z/15992
With your immediate help and continued participation, Amnesty will be better able to immediately address this situation.
Sincerely yours,
Hilary
