Humans have lost their compassion--by Emi

I think my compassion is usually what hurts me the most in this world. I make friends with people and do a lot of help them, protect them, raise their spirits. And then I get choked in the end. It's interesting, because it shows that humans don't have a lot of compassion anymore.

Nowadays, I think that people work more and more on satisfying themselves. People work on selfish reasons, and some don't even care who they destroy in their search for power, money, and authority.

I'll admit, I have my own selfish moments. I work to try and make myself happy, but I've also been known to work against my own happiness for my friends. When I really sit and think about it, I'd prefer to see my friends laughing and smiling, even when I'm losing it inside.

An example was one of our game days. I lost it a couple of days later from the despair building inside of me, but I said nothing of what was going on inside my head because they were there to have fun, and I wasn't going to ruin that.

An episode of Lilo and Stitch made me stop and think. We have lost the ability to like people for the differences. In the episode, they had a show that people tried out for and if the person was extremely weird or freaky, then they won the prize. It was very cruel, and only Lilo seemed to realize how bad it was.

You could be sure that if I saw someone being made fun of, I'd be trying to stop it. Even with an enemy, I can feel compassion. A girl back at my school ridiculed me in front of her friends, trying to put me down, calling my names. That same year, I saw her at one of the dances sobbing. And despite the voice in my head telling me to walk away, I was ready to ask what was wrong. Her friend came before I could, but I'm fairly sure she noticed the look I was giving.

And I know, despite how much my friends are called freaks, they would be there to help others, even if those others may have been mean.

We try to make our problems worse than other people's. We act like breaking a nail or getting a stain on our dress is worse than anything else. I'm guilty of acting like this, but I don't really feel that way. I know there are so many things that happen that I couldn't understand.

For instance, I have been sexually abused. But other people have been raped, continuously, and some people are killed afterward. My parents still have me in their arms to tell me its okay. How do those families feel that can only hold the clothing of their child now?

I had a bad childhood. My father hit me, and my step mom put me down. But some people don't even have parents. Some live in foster care, or in orphan homes. Some lose their parents to illness, like Doyle has. Yet a lot of them manage to keep their heads high. Just like my mom has an illness herself, but at least I still have her, and will for years to come. I can still hug her and help her out, no matter how upset I get about it.

I have a good life when you think about it. A lot of us do, even when we complain. but what about those who really don't?

We have lost our compassion for the world. Will we lose all of our humanity too?

**You know whats funny though? USM seems to be a good exception to all of this. I've never seen so much compassion before, which is why I love this site.

Date: 7/28/2004 4:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 59531    I like to think that people are inherently good. Dont be sad, at least you'll always know, you yourself are a beautifully compassionate person, but though you may sometimes feel the only one left, remember that you are not.
Date: 7/28/2004 4:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i get what you are saying. there are times when i feel like my life is worse off than anyone elses...then i see someone worse off than me. when my son was in the hospital for his seizures, i kept thinking "why us?"...then i met the little 3 year old in the room next door on his way to houstonto see a specialist to try and save his life. it really made me count my blessings. and i know what you mean about being there for people. there are people who take advantage of me and walk all over me...but, when they need me, i am there. i don't think all humans have lost their compassion...as you said, just being on USM shows me that there are some people left with it. but many do think selfishly of themselves. excellent post!
Date: 7/28/2004 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 19682    I know what you mean. I feel that too. It sickens me and that is where my emotional pain comes from. All your words spoken are the ones I cannot transmit.

Thank you, but there are some good people out there, just fewer.

Also, a lot of non-parenting is going on and that is part of the problem.

Date: 7/28/2004 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 30229    Emi, such a great post, and so very true! I am a lot like you, I try to see the good side of a bad situation, and I know there are people who have it worse. I, like you, have a good life... I am 50 yrs. old and would not go back to any of my other ages.... I feel as though I have earned each and every one of these years, lol... Someone once said the key to life is NOT having what you want, but WANING what you have... that makes sense to me. Great post honey, and you are such an intelligent young lady to see this at such a young age, and to beat the odds you have beaten!!! You are awesome!!!
Date: 7/28/2004 4:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 1799    yes, i know there are still some good people in the world to those who mentioned it. The friends I keep closest, my close friends right here on this site, show me that there are. It may not be completely lost, but it goes down every single day. we lose people who show compassion as well.. from suicides.. to murder.. to illness (R.I.P. Karen)... we need more people to put out the effort.. or someday, it may be completely lost.
Date: 7/28/2004 5:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 23101    Got to love those young cartoon shows .. He he.. They always show you good lessons. :D I think that this is part true, and so, you know, I really think that there are some people like you in this world who care about others enough to make them happy! :D *hugs*
Date: 7/28/2004 5:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 61966    I totally agree with everything you are saying here. Sometimes we complain about the small things that happen to us when there are others out there who are worse off. We should be grateful for what we do have and try to look at the bright side of things, even in bad situations. Yes, there are tons of people on this site who have not lost their compassion and thats great. I just wish the world could be like this...lets just spread the love LoL. Great post Emi!
Date: 7/28/2004 5:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Yes, it's very sad that so many lack compassion and understanding. Actually, most in this world don't even practice common courtesy or appreciation.
Date: 7/28/2004 6:05:00 PM  ( Admin )   EMI, very good post. :)h X 1000
Date: 7/28/2004 7:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    Yes Emi there are cruel & mean people in the world! Who slash you with cruel words or who kill! Who rape & destroy! Just like the person who took Brooke!(findbrooke.com) Yet at the same time there are loving & kind people who heal with words & deeds! Just remember there is a balance! Cuz there has to be. I also believe light will out shine the dark in the end! I love ya girl!
Date: 7/28/2004 7:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 62787    overall, i think many people are nice and compassionate..we are animals..we (like them) tend to our needs first. it is an instinct. killing, protecting..its what every animal does.- Blade of the Samurai
Date: 7/28/2004 8:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 62728    Emi, I can so identify with how you feel. I know that I have had the same thoughts before. I will honestly tell you that I don't think you should despair, though, because I firmly believe that the compassion and humanity is still there. People are still as compassionate inside, I just think they are scared to show it in many times. When tragedy strikes and people need it, it comes out. I think also that it is a little harder to see these days, but it's there in the subtle signs. -DeltaRebel
Date: 7/28/2004 8:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 1799    no.. i wasn't in despair because of that.. that was a completely different issue. i've gotten fairly used to the cruel people now.
Date: 7/28/2004 9:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    I hear ya. People can be really cruel. I can't stand racists, homophobics, chauvinists, or the like. And I don't understand why people have to be so mean to others. It sickened me when I read Night by Elie Wiesel and I saw how cruel the human race can be, even to their own. But at least you're looking on the bright side of things and are a compassionate person yourself. You seem like a wonderful person and I'm glad to know there are good people in the world like you. "Hugs"
Date: 7/28/2004 9:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    What goes around comes around, sounds "cliche" but it is so true.
Date: 7/28/2004 10:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 53558    Great post,Emi. I can see where you are coming form..
Date: 7/29/2004 1:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 11348    This is a great post, and everything you've said is completely true. Everyone seems to be becoming more and more selfish as time moves forward, and I hope something happens to turn this huge problem around.
