Not certain how much of the chord's entirety that is used, but I do know that the ingredients are just that, and I think it is termed as the medical name on mascara tubes instead of saying umbilical chord remains. (-: |

The hospital will temporarily store you child's cord blood. If you don't send it to a place designed for keeping it, they will use it for research. Cord blood is instrumental in childhood illnesses like luekemia, I believe. I asked for my son's to be stored, but like you I don't know what happened to it. I guess I should find out as well. |

Frog Lady, did you sign something that consented to it or did they explain to you the benefits of having it done and give you a choice? I don't remember signing anything, being told about any of it, I just remember her taking it. |

YOu can always go to the hospital and request to look at the records from that date. It should be marked in there. |

I remember being asked if I wanted it saved. I told them I did but I don't remember signing anything. I'll have to look in my hospital files at home. I'm not sure if I still have everything. |

I signed something when my daughter was born... i actually signed it before she was born. I think they also use it to help out other kids that are ill... i may be wrong though :)-Lindsay |

the research with the storing the blood and the need for it later in life is sorta spotty(no pun intended) for how much you pay for it to be stored at aproper bank nd set up fees(your looking a few grand then you pay each month to maintain it)it's rare that your child will need that blood again....and some scientists say if it's a blood illness your child has.. the stored blood might just have that illness dormant in it |

you would know if your cord blood is saved..you have to pay a fee for this and it is pretty costly..there is a "special" company that does this... |

I realize that the blood is stored, I also realize what that it's either typical used for stem cell research or you save it for family use if needed in the future. Let me rephrase my initial question in the post. Do they have to do some kind of testing with it?..., like they check to make sure all of your placenta is there in the lab later so they know whether or not they got it all, something along those lines? If I am not paying to store it, and since I didn't even consent to or sign anything for them to take it (that I can remember, but for some odd reason I am almost certain I WOULD remember having the discussion about this and signing the necessary paperwork, I was 3 centimeters, having mild contractions for 2 days at that point and stopping in to see what the heck was going on and if that boy was coming or not so I KNOW I would have remembered.) did the hospital "store" it for use on whatever the heck it was they wanted to use it for? Sur5r stated something about the mascara, which I have heard about placenta in make-up but not actual blood. If I didn't consent to it and again you would think if I consented to it I would have at least been given some kind information on the storage of it, and they took it, let alone, not knowing what they did with it, isn't that...ummm not right somehow? |
