Stereotypes/Labels Are Retarted... ~Rika~

First and foremost, I absolutely loathe the pinning of labels on people. Words like "prep", "punk", "goth".. these all bother me to no end. The only label I really use is "emo" and I don't even really use it to label any certain individual.. I use it more as an adjective to describe something/someone whiney and self-pitying.. (Example: "I don't mean to get all emo on you..")

Unfortunately, everyone is labeled.. usually because people are close-minded and ignorant and find people who dress/look alike to BE alike.. which brings me to stereotyping.

I'm labeled "goth".. even just the WORD "goth" annoys me.. I hear it so many times a day, it's unbelievable.. my brothers call me "Gothika" (because my name is Arika and they think it's funny..), when I walk down the street with friends, I hear it. I don't really mind all that much.. I mean I DO dress and look how most people would imagine a "goth" to dress and look.. and I guess it's just their own innocent labeling going on inside their minds.

What angers me the most, though, is when people constantly steretype me. OK, first of all, I'm Christian.. most of my friends are not and I get grief from them all the time about it because they think Christianity is stupid/brainwashing.. but I stand firm in my beliefs.. yet people ask me if I worship the devil.. I mean seriously ask me. Sorry, no.. just because I wear black doesn't mean I'm Satan's minion... lol.

There's this alley.. and I walked up it to get to my friend's house.. and a whole bunch of guys were there and they were like.. "Hey Ma.." and that annoys me so I was like "Excuse me.. did you just call me Ma..?" with an annoyed look and I walked away and they were like "Oh let's go slaughter babies and drink goat's blood." GRR it just bothers me to no end.

It annoys me that when people see people wearing black they automatically think "DEVIL WORSHIPPING TROUBLE MAKER!" So annoying.

So, are you labeled?

Date: 8/6/2004 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 33573    I can't blame you. I agree with your whole post. I am guilty of labeling but I do not do it that often. I try not to if I do because I think it's annoying. Whatever and however people wantto dress and act is their own business. I don't know if I am labeled or not. I guess I would be a goody-two-shoes or something like that. I don't drink or smoke like the other 95% of my class does. But I could care less, I don't want to risk the stuff I have now just so I can have one or two nights of fun. Good post :)
Date: 8/6/2004 3:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    I'm sick and tired of people labeling me a intelligent handsome gentleman. lol
Date: 8/6/2004 3:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 33573    LOL!
Date: 8/6/2004 3:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    LSR, actually, ever since I've been labeled "goth" my self esteem has sky-rocketed.. because I don't bother myself worrying over what they say.. I like my style and that's all that matters.
Date: 8/6/2004 3:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    Volleygirl, hey, nothing wrong with being goody-goody.. that's actually pretty cool to me.. alot of my friends are straight-edge.
Date: 8/6/2004 3:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    Haha Mfrompa!
Date: 8/6/2004 4:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 53157    Sometimes i get labeled like some think im preppy or something which i am not....i hate labels. I mean i dont think i fit in any of them. the way i label myself is im just me....goofy,funny,a dreamer with big dreams. The way a person dresses is there own thing, maybe they like it and if you label them they might not be like who you think they are because of them being sterotyped because of what they wear. Good post!:)
Date: 8/6/2004 4:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    I think everyone is an individual.. not just the product of some stupid label.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 7341    I think the title of your post is totally offensive...
Date: 8/6/2004 4:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    As far as I know, no one has ever labeled me by the clothes I wear. I wear hoodies and jeans and vans shoes. Not sure what stereotype that fits under.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 38601    yeah...i get labeled as a punk and a goth...I'm just me...I don't know how they settle on those labels since I'm always doing something different...I try not to dress or act in a way that could get me labeled...I prefer to keep people guessing
Date: 8/6/2004 4:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    I figured someone would get offended about me saying "retarted"... unfortunately, it's a commonly used word nowdays in reference to something stupid.. which is in the context I'm using it.. I'm not saying labels are mentally challenged or anything. But hey, if you don't think it's appropriate, by all means go ahead and delete it.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    Everyone's an individual.. my friends think I have a unique style and I'm labeled "goth".. but I'm still unique.. not just like everyone else.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    Most people label subconsciously, but to stereotype based on those labels is stupid in my opinions.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 7341    I know you're not saying labels are mentally challenged...I believe it's just an innappropriate word to describe what you want to talk about...and it is very offensive. I'm not going to delete it...just wanted to bring it to your attention that it's offensive..
Date: 8/6/2004 4:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 6915    You just used a sterotype in your title...sad sad.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 62476    yeah i'm kinda labeled emo punkish that type. I hate in a-town he all these people get labeled "ghetto" if they listen to rap. Ghetto technically means poor and you are not poor if you listen to rap.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 37449    Im Labeled as I prep, I dont mind it.
Date: 8/6/2004 4:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 53008    i usually get labeled as a prep. i don't like it. i am me. i don't care for lables, but the lable i hate the most to give anyone is "poser".
Date: 8/6/2004 6:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    I've had some great labels tossed my way by good old members right here. And usually these are the so called "tolerant champions of free speach and diversity".
Date: 8/6/2004 7:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    Where was there a stereotype used in my title? I said labels are retarted. That's not stereotyping anyone.... but ok.
Date: 8/6/2004 7:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    lol BCAR, I know whatcha mean.
Date: 8/6/2004 7:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    I HATE THE WORD POSER!
Date: 8/6/2004 7:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 44960    They ran out of labels to use on me! :) (((PrissieHuggzz)))
Date: 8/6/2004 8:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    If I had a dollar for every time I was labelled, I'd be a rich kid. But it doesn't matter. You are what you are, no matter what other people think. Just do the decent thing and try not to be a hypocrite. You can't honestly say you don't label people. It's human nature. And human nature sucks. -
Date: 8/6/2004 8:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 62841    i get labeled as punk/goth....i dont like it at all cuz it bugs me soo much espically when the people who hate us "punk/goths" say it to us-PsYcHoTiCbEaSt
Date: 8/6/2004 9:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    Check this out..forget what everyone else says, you are a beautiful girl.
Date: 8/7/2004 12:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 58809    Yeah it ticks me off too. But I don't get labeled. I wiggle too much in terms of "fashion" and music that you just can't label meeee
Date: 8/7/2004 1:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 11348    Yeah... stereotypes and labels are an unfortunate part of life. I have been labeled as a "prep" before... but it really doesn't bother me. Saying someone or something is retarded is a label, just like the word poser.
Date: 8/7/2004 7:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 62728    Rika, I think ShimmerKiss was refering to the choice to use "retarded" as a negative description of labeling and stereotyping. Instead of just saying it was wrong, you said it was retarded, which is considered by some to be the same as using the n-word to describe black people or other words. Just what I think the reference might have been to. -DeltaRebel
Date: 8/7/2004 2:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    I'm not talking about "retarted" as a label.. that's an adjective so of course it can label something.. but I'm talking about labels like "prep", "punk", "emo", "goth", THOSE labels. Retarted to me is not a classification of people in one group based on how they dress/act.
Date: 8/7/2004 4:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 62728    I understand what you meant it as, was just saying I think that's what ShimmerKiss was getting at with his statement. -DeltaRebel
Date: 8/7/2004 6:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Actually what Shimmerkiss was pointing out is that the way the word "retarted" is used in the title, it is stereo-typing and labelling mentally retarded people as stupid.
Date: 8/7/2004 8:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    By saying labels are retarted, I was not at all referring to the intelligence of mentally challenged people. Mentally challenged people have nothing to do with this post at all.. retarted is a word that is commonly used as slang nowadays to say something is stupid.. I picked it up because my brothers say it alot. I wasn't saying all mentally challenged people are stupid. I hate when things are taken out of context as much as they are nowadays what with "political correctness" running rampant..
Date: 8/7/2004 9:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 62728    I don't know that it's as much a question of political correctness as it is tastefulneess, Rika. Retarded is a word that many people do use these days to say something is stupid. It's also a word that is widely used, usually negatively, as a descriptive word for those who are mentally handicapped. Just because it's widely used, doesn't mean it's right to do it. Would you run out and say "That is so gay!" when you want to say something is stupid? I know a lot of people who say that, and I think that is disrespectful as well. I guess that's really the only point that some of us are trying to get across, that you are using a word that is a negative description of a group of people and using it as a negative adjective. -DeltaRebel
Date: 8/7/2004 9:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    I agree. Labels are okay for cans, but not for people.
Date: 8/7/2004 10:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Rika, we understand what you meant, you aren't understanding what we mean. Your post is basically a complaint about how stero-types and labels are stupid and people that stereo-type stink. We are just pointing out that while complaining about something, you did what you are complaining about and you didn't think twice about it because it's simply something you are used to. Ya know it's kinda one of those "Whoops" things?...LOL. I agree with your post, but I also know that I can stereo-type and label really not thinking much about it, but in the same token be upset about a label or stereo-type that is personal to me. I didn't much appreciate being treated like a dumb blonde back in the day when my hair was much lighter, but I still call things retarded too.
Date: 8/7/2004 10:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Here's a story for you. My Aunt drove a van for this company that drives around the mentally disabled. She's driving along and this guy cuts her off and she blurts out "You retard!" with a van full of mentally retarded adults in the back. On top of that, her supervisor was riding along that day. She didn't say it loud enough for the clients to hear it, but her boss did and he chuckled, not because it was funny, but because he knew it just slipped out.
Date: 8/7/2004 10:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    ^^^Sorry, your post just kinda sparked the memory of that story...LOL
Date: 8/8/2004 11:44:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    DeltaRebel, actually I do say "that's so gay.." lol and I say it in front of gay people too.. the gay people I know don't really mind.
Date: 8/8/2004 11:46:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 35720    Hahaha Az.. yeah, I know labels/stereotypes are human nature.. no one can really help their own natural labeling of people.. it's the actual "everyone's the same in that group" nonsense that gets to me.. and LOL @ your story.. aww. :p
Date: 10/12/2004 4:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 22275    twinnie i love you but arent you stereotyping stereotypers?
